Wow, the first time I saw him was in West-End playing Miss Trunchbull for Matilda, when I told my singing teacher, she just CASUALLY mentioned that she’s known him for years and helped him record his audition for Matilda in the very same room I sing in every week. She got me to meet him outside the stage door afterward and he signed my Miss T merchandise! Then when I came back to the other side of the world, it turned out he’d be performing Javert an hour away from my home! He then signed a CD of his new album and said he remembered me! Nothing’s ever made me feel that special, that’s when I knew I wanted to be exactly like him when I’m older. Just wow.

Oh thank goodness ... there is a **still** a production of Les Mis (somewhere in the world) where Javert is wearing a decent wig. It's an absolute stunner too; not many get the steel grey treatment - he properly deserves that. I know a lot about Javerts (I'm the one writing a book on the show) and I think I've only seen the silver fox done in Germany ...

I ve also seen Norm Lewis wearing a silver wig ( with a tail long up to the waist) on the show ; i wonder if men were really wearing wigs by that time or they let their hair grow so long ???

@@DoroteeaZorici they weren’t, wigs started going out of fashion around the turn of the century, as well as long hair for men. Somehow I still think it fits Javert, though

Regulations in the army had disallowed long hair for over 15 years before Valjean was released from prison, so it fell out of fashion in civilian life, too. Long hair was still worn by the flamboyant Hussars until 1805 in a queue (hair tied back and could be also braided on the sides of the face). But, everywhere else, short hair was the regulation and style. There is an illustration of Javert in the original book depicting him with short hair and bushy, mutton-chop sideburns. He was, in fact, patterned after a real-life individual: Eugène François Vidocq. The book illustration greatly resembles a later depiction of Vidocq.

Someday, I hope we get a movie version of 'Les Miserables' with a Javert who sounds like this. A movie version with really, really good singing by actual vocally trained singers, unlike the movie version we got where the vast majority of the cast was chosen because of name recognition rather than vocal talent. Samantha Barks excepted (because she's an actual stage actress), the casting of the film version of 'Les Miz' was a disaster. I know Hugh Jackman is a big name, and I know he's sung on stage, but the part of Valjean was way out of his range and he ended up having to SCREAM 'Bring Him Home' just to hit the notes because Tom Hooper thought, for some reason, that all songs would be better if they were sung live. They weren't.

Half the movie cast in the Hugh Jackman movie were former Les Misérables performers from London and all around the world though. just not the leads, except for Hugh Jackman who is in fact a trained musical theater performer.

Luckily was able to see Les Mis in Pittsburgh last week and was able to see Hayden return as Javert. Never heard a theater go more crazy than when he hits the final “Stars” at the end. My favorite Javert

This is gorgeous. I don't see it as much as getting more into character (which he does visually) but beginning thoughtful and contemplative, then he looks to the stars and feels himself reassured in his beliefs and turned ferocious in his chase. it makes him more dimensional than simply a relentless, obsessed cop. For me there is the question why Javert is so hung up on Valjean, who isn't the most dangerous or horrible criminal around? It is because Valjean threatens everything Javert believes in: that criminals are that way because of an inherent character flaw and that they can't change. Before Montreuil 24601/Jean le Cric was likely only memorable due to his strength but mainly a criminal - and that man appears to be a good administrator and benevolent person? No way! Javert is trying to erase this living flaw in the way his world works, that is why he is so keen on reducing Valjean once more to a number.

Javert is probably my favorite representation of a hardened man of the law. Javert is a man who is obsessed with bringing Jean ValJean to justice for breaking his parole. He is “you can run but you can’t hide!” In the form of a man.

I hate it that since Russell Crowe did Javert in the movie version all subsequent actors have worn beards for this role. Javert never had a beard in earlier productions. Only thick, awesome side burns! Valjean had a beard, in contrast. In fact, the original producers wanted Colm Wilkinson to shave for the part until a drawing from the original les miserables novel showed Valjean with facial hair. I love beards, wear one myself, but it doesn't fit Javert's character.
