The problem with Stars is that too many singers try too hard not to sound like Quast or Norm. While copying another version is never going to lead the singer to his own place in the history, It is unnecessary to deliberately avoid singing like someone. Secomb here sings in the similar style as Quast did and he is AMAZING. Just as good as Quast but not exactly identical. This IS how one should perform this song.
@Mcfads9992 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I didn't know who he was to be honest when I went to The Queens. This matches Philip Quast. I've often come back here . Especially the other night. It was really star studded the sky.

Was gonna say the same thing! (Well, mostly) Phillip Quast really MADE the character, and there are only so many vocal colors one could use to interpret a song.

This song is the reason Javert is my favorite character in Les Mis next to Eponine... So much about him is revealed through this one song and sets up his ultimate downfall
@mwpatrick7814 жыл бұрын
His demeanor is UNPARALLELED. Perfect Javert. His vibe almost seems like some sort of reptile. Never losing focus on his objective, and letting nothing get in his way. You can tell his javert doesn’t let himself feel much emotion. Everything is strict and straight forward.
@lordyeetus63172 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I love that he's gone further than Philip Quast to even more animalistic and straight-toned. It just works, and creates a truly intimidating character, which is exactly what Javert needs to be.

I was one of the Gaveroche(s) from the 1998 cast, when Les Miserables was at the Palace theatre in london. This gives me goosebumps listening to this, I used to be able to watch it from the wings every night for 8 months (plus 6 weeks cause I fell off the barricade in the dress rehearsal of act 2 when Javert is found out that he is spying and ended up breaking my wrist when I hit the ground), with other cast members and our Javert would have the cast in tears when he sang “Stars”. But when we would do “one day more” as an ensemble just before the end of act 1, or even “empty chairs at empty tables” those are the song that hit the musical nerve the hardest (every Gaveroche gets to do ECaET on their final show with the rest of the “spectres”, the first of the Gaveroche(s) being Adam Searls)

I saw him twice in 2015, once only 2 weeks into his run and he was amazing! His stage presence is truly outstanding. He commands the stage even when he barely moves, like in this song. And in his scenes with Valjean, he was so menacing, I honestly feared for old 24601's life - and I knew how the story would end! His Soliloquy is heart-wrenching, by the way, you want him not to jump so badly... Plus, I briefly met him at stage door (I was too nervous to do more than ask for an autograph) and he's a really nice bloke.

Usually it's I Dreamed a Dream or One Day More that gets to me the most, but Stars was truly the star (no pun intended) of the musical. I took my girlfriend to see Les Mis in London for her birthday last October and this guy was playing Javert. The whole cast was excellent, but he stole the show. Absolutely incredible. As someone who always considered Russell Crowe to be the weakest part of the movie version, it was awesome to see such a great Javert.
@SharkAcademy7 жыл бұрын
TheSilentScreamX I agree, I wish they would've casted someone like him who although didn't have any name, would've became a star and drawn people in by word of mouth. But, they decided an all star cast would bring more people in since it was a risky endeavor to begin with.
@theblasblas6 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer the RUssel Crowe version, the way he sings about God, order and punishment with an almost emotionless look on his face makes him a better parallel to Valjean than Sacomb's angry sounding singing and fierce looking face. Javert is not a man with a vendetta, but one who sincerely sees his path as the correct one. The weakest part of the movie for me was whenever Hugh Jackman tried hitting any high notes, hahaha.
@wolverinefangowings6 жыл бұрын
Agree, there will never be another Quast, though Secomb is still outstanding. I wasn't a fan of Crowe, either. Nothing against JVJ but if Javert doesn't steal the show, something is very wrong.
