About this Album:
These are the only concertos that Haydn wrote for himself to play: by his own admission ‘no great wizard’ on any instrument,
nonetheless these agreeably tuneful early works show how Haydn’s nascent style was gaining shape and symphonic
aspiration beyond the simple charm of Mozart’s superficially similar Church sonatas.
These new period-instrument recordings take account of the latest scholarship, including research into the kind of organs
Haydn played, with booklet notes by the soloist and director, Anton Holzapfel.

great .. I love organ .. these were written originally for a keyboard? correct me if I am mistaken .. I hear the same melody from keyboard concerto

What edition is this? Normally you hear the first concerto with oboes only, sometimes also with trumpets, but never with timpani. I know that there are copies that include timpani (although they seem not to be by Haydn). Also the trumpets here seem to be different than in the Breitkopf/Henle score. So where could I find the score of this version?

Can I ask you a question guys? Was Mozart better than Haydn? I truly am curious as to why the fondness of Mozart seems higher. I have personally felt like Haydn was a bit boring compared to Mozart but I am convinced I am missing something. That is why I am here.

Mozart felt Hadyn was the greatest composer and Hadyn thought Mozart was. But that doesn't answer your question.

Lester Mozart and Haydn were the only two genuine ‘A’ list composers of the Classical period (c.1750 - 1800). Neither one nor the other was better or worse, they were different. They had a mutual love, respect and admiration for each other and each felt stimulated and challenged musically by the other. It is better too try to look for the differences, not the similarities between the two composers - they are far deeper than most casual listeners realise. In a nutshell, in Mozart, listen for the perfectly balanced, poised, profusion of cantabile (singable) melody; in Haydn, listen for the intense working with motivic fragments, disruption of expectation, working out of ideas and themes that are essentially instrumental in conception. In some respects, Mozart can be more immediately appealing; with time you will understand Haydn better when you stop hoping it’s going to be like Mozart, because it’s not! In the next generation, Beethoven is far, far closer to Haydn in terms of compositional technique than he is to Mozart. Forget the idea of who was better, Mozart or Haydn? It makes about as much sense as which is the better colour, red or blue?

Personally I believe Haydn was the greatest composer of the Classical era because Mozart was able to adopt his innovations and expand with his own genius for drama and virtuosity as a pianist. Without Haydn there would be a lesser Mozart. And Haydn learned from Mozart in his later works. Regarding Opera Mozart was greater but he again learned from both Haydn's and was more dramatic in a natural way.
