I'm not very religious anymore, but my music history class took a trip today to St. Agnes Cathedral in Minneapolis to see this mass performed. It blew me away! ESPECIALLY this movement. It was also interesting to see an entire church service done in Latin, even the readings were chanted in Latin!

It's rare to hear such raw emotions from Haydn. We often times pass him by as just an opening act to Mozart and Beethoven. But as he aged his spirit troubled him and its moments like these where you can hear the pure anguish in the music. Definitely one of the darkest Kyrie around.

Funny, but when I hear Mozart I think of Haydn....Haydn was that good.

superiorbandgeek ‘Emotion’ in Haydn is different from that of Mozart or Beethoven. It is sometimes more difficult to make the connection and understand it, partly because too often, we judge it by Mozartian or Beethovenian standards - this is a mistake because it has its own adjective, Haydnesque and all three are in fact different, not better or worse. If you read the reviews of Haydn’s symphonies written for London, the newspapers describe vividly the emotional impact on contemporary audiences, indeed the reviews for the ‘Military’ symphony, in particular, the slow movement, describe a raw emotional sensation almost unparalleled in the history of music. The problem for many listeners is that they do not properly understand Haydn’s musical language, not that it lacks raw emotion; additionally, at the time, both Mozart and Beethoven themselves found much to study and admire in Haydn’s works, something they did not hear in Dittersdorf, Vanhal, Salieri et al.

Il canto si vede molta differenza tra amatori e professionisti. È molto bello ad ascoltare sia musica che canto…..

Wikipedia: 'Haydn's chief biographer, H. C. Robbins Landon, has written that this mass "is arguably Haydn's greatest single composition"'. I agree. This is a fine version, good soloists whose voices are crisp and separate in this fine recording. Thanks for uploading!

I can't remember the first time that I heard this mass, almost 50 years ago, but I have loved it ever since, especially the Gloria. This is an OK performance, but I don't know if there are any better ones on KZbin, copyright laws being what they are. It's kind of ironic and also rather encouraging to me that this is being done by an Israeli group. It shows that there are those in that country who value great music, and perform it no matter what the origin before an appreciative audience.

Well, its not the regular soprano parts that I find difficult. It is just the Kyrie soprano solo, with crazy long runs of really fast coloratura, I am singing it now, but it is really difficult and more than a little intimidating. But the music is good and a challenge is even better it just means I am learning! :) Hope it goes well when you perform it with your choir!!

Very beautiful, but I can't help notice that they strangely used the Italianized pronunciation, instead of the Germanic that is more appropriate, and more usually used for Haydn.
