Haydn: Sonata in C Major, Hob. XVI:50, L. 60 - Allegro

Believed to be Haydn's final piano sonata, this pieces was composed in 1794/1795 during the composer's second visit to London. Along with the other London Sonatas (the great E-flat Sonata Hob. 52, the D Major Hob. 51, and the E-flat Hob. 49), these late sonatas represent the culmination of Haydn's writing: motivically dense, inventive, playful, while epitomizing his mastery of sonata form.
The London Sonatas also represent some of Haydn's most progressive writing for the keyboard, as he experiments with asymmetrical phrases, thicker textures, more technically demanding passagework, a wider dynamic palate, and a larger tonal range, in large part due to the new hammerklavier instruments available in London which Haydn did not have access to in Vienna. Some of the most notable passages in this sonata are the "open pedal" passages, in which Haydn asks the performer to lift the dampers to let the sound ring for several measures.
