So so SOOOO lovely Gary. To do so much variation is truly breathtaking. I know I'm two years late to this video, but my goodness it's an amazing piece, and I've been sharing it all day. Wonderful music.

@@GaryHayes Oh well, I spend more time watching you and other inspirers than actually making music, and that is an issue. I need to set aside time for both.
@AutPen3810 ай бұрын
I think it's a very common issue. There are a thousands of us out here that describe ourselves as musicians who spend more time watching tutorials, reading reviews, and making shopping lists of gear than actually creating music. Videos like this one are strangely therapeutic for those of us that are music makers that aren't currently in music-making mood.

This is an absolute gem of a tutorial Gary. Very well explained and really shows what can be done with minimal equipment and the variety that can be achieved throughout the performance. 👍🏽

Brilliant! Thanks loads for the lesson again! I wonderful indight into the Berlin School working methodology... I had no idea about the ratchet thing... now I know, and it will cost me! Loved how you used the attenuators on the Neutron to intorduce this feature... great idea! I always thought you were Australian but I detect a hint of the Old North (of England) in your accent! well, thanks once again for a wonderful video!
@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Andrew. Born in Gloucester, lived in Manchester for 15 years then London for 20 years, but can't shake off that n.eng accent, even though been in Australia for 17 years now! Yes the attenuator is just allowing me to control the amount of CV coming from the random CV generator and the Neutron patchbay has a bunch of independent functions (probably 5 key ones) that saves buying 5 $200 modules! But the key thing you need to get variable ratchet is of course a CV controlled clock multiplier - Doepfer do a nice one but I got one that has division too, in fact a 2nd on order, cause I realised I can link them and have one clock in and 4 controllable separate clocks out (not just for ratchets but to distribute to everything else and polyrhythms etc) ... Cheers again!

@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
Yes the TipTop is my most expensive module, almost the same as the Neutron/ModelD, but for melodic control and a lot more it beats the basic A156 style quantizers

Thanks so much for the tutorial at the end! Videos like these make me put more thought into using my Neutron patch points. It's also making me appreciate the utility that modular brings and seems to be the seductive gateway into that frightening (and expensive) world. Have you considered switching the tune and PWM knobs on the Neutron? It makes it harder to accidentally get it out of tune. Also switching the smaller filter knob with the larger LFO knob can give finer manual filter control.
@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
Yes thanks Joe - appreciate the listen and agree the modular rabbit hole looks deep! But I am trying to stay at level 1, knob per function vs buying quite expensive 'computers in a module' and some are digital. Also Behringer have opened up this world for many folk now at 1/4 the price - also re: the Neutron I am currently printing my own faceplate/design so waiting until I finish that before switching a few knobs around as meant to do that earlier! Cheers

@@GaryHayes I've looked at the System 100M modules and have a wishlist for a basic setup that still pushes $1000 USD with a nice case...which I know is still on the low end of things! I appreciate what Behringer is doing to make things more affordable for the masses. I'm also trying to control my Gear Acquisition Syndrome and limit myself to things that add a new sound to my pallette (aiming for an ELMIRA DIY kit next), and focus on playing and making music with what I have first. And VCV Rack base is free and can help scratch that itch for modular knowledge for the time being. Thanks again and keep doing what you're doing - your Sunday streams are a bright point in my weekend and helps inspire my own creativity!
@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
@@JoeAliberti yes it can sure add up quickly - but I see this more as a setup replacement vs just more gear. When I get my Elektron Analog four back from warranty repair will be integrating that with it for sure. One thing I will be avoiding will be the expensive $600 per module Mutable style stuff (which I think are more aimed at non-player types) looking at more generative style ... that route can easily set you back $5k and beyond

@@hischuzzness551 As you know I have a Hydrasynth to scratch the poly AfterTouch itch (as well as a JV1080) in my gallery studio setup. Also have two Xkey37 and now two QuNexus small keyboards which are all poly Aftertouch - so no way would I even consider a Deckards. What's a 'pop' in the loopop patreon context?
@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
@@hischuzzness551 I wasn't having a 'pop' ... loopop is a great way to decide on whether something has certain features that you may be considering. With his 150 thousand followers ( and obviously many patreons) along with companies sending him stuff to review, he has become the defacto first watch for new gear (along with Nick of SonicState) and sometime Bobeep? But they are 'manual' textbook sort of reviews, I prefer to find people who have had the gear for a few months and are creating music with soul with it tbh ... rarely buy something based on technical reviews anymore.

Thank you for this super video of 'Berlin school' creation and particularly the in's and out's of creating it. I too use a 960 for my sequencing which triggers a Neutron via a Quantizer (uTune, not TipTop) and was wondering whether you'd experienced this issue. My 960 runs a 6 step sequence faultlessy but when I introduce the Quantizer it randomly changes a couple of the notes either a half step up or down, no pattern to it but it renders the sequence unusable in a mix. I can only think it might be the 960's oscillators drift slightly and the quantizer adjusts the note incorrectly. Have you ever experienced anything similar with your 960? Thanks.
@GaryHayes2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Lynton - yes all the time, in fact you can hear it on several of my pieces with the 960 in. It happens on most sequencers where the note sits half way between the quantize notes - although the 960 is definitely a worse case. Tends to be much better on coarser scales like pentatonics or whole tones, but normal scales and particularly semitones the quantizer sometimes flips - as you say if you are doing very precise sequences it is a problem, I tend to let happy accidents occur though!

Brilliant stuff!! Is there a way to sequence each oscillator on the Model D separately from each of the three rows of the 960?
@GaryHayes3 жыл бұрын
Wish there was - as I sequence the two osc on the Neutron that way ... but if there was a patchbay that did that then yes you can take CV from each of the 3 rows on the 960 - Thanks Scott
