I saved a buddy from making a bad decision on a Jayco Hummingbird last year. The seller had detailed the crap out of it, shiny tires and all, but I saw the “pimples” (braille) below the front side window, plus the ceiling flexed when you pushed on it. If I wasn’t there to advise him, he would have bought it.

I wanted to leave an update on my rv after watching this video. We bought a used 2014 wild cat about a month after this video. Out the door price with cash and had enough leftover for a few repairs. No water damage. So i decided to reseal the roof. Well actually I resealed the entire rv including windows, doors, and anything attached to the outside. Ended up replacing slideout rubber. Could not find anything major wrong. Just kept checking everything. Even the tank sensors worked. Just to good to be true was what I was saying. After all these months now and a few trips we had water running down the bedroom wall right below the cap. Heavy rain storm. So I gutted that wall. It appears it has leaked a small amount for a while. So I'm repairing during this winter. The leak turned out to be the antenna. So it's gone. I just wanted to say thanks for these types of videos. We would have never looked for used had it not been for this and 1 other video you made about buying used. Thanks again Josh for what you do

After retirement I planned on engaging in the RV lifestyle for a long time. 2 weeks of this RV retirement journey was spent attending the RV Inspection Course being taught at the National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas. Well worth the time and $$ as I now have good knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of these vehicles. It also opened my eyes to the industry practices and all that means. I stayed 2 weeks to learn to be a Level 2 certified inspector. My thoughts, if you are going to be a long time RV'er get some education about the RV's and the industry. Well worth it.

It remains a mystery to me that with all the advancements they have made with laminated aluminum & fiberglass walls, the roof is still vinyl over plywood with a bunch of caulking. The floor inside the RV is just as weather proof as the roof. You'd think they would have come up with a better system by now, given that the roof is the most important component of any structure after the foundation.

It's a sign of good leadership I think. We often forget the experiences we have at the individual level commonly reflect the practices, teachings, and values of the facility's leadership team. I consider myself fortunate to have received good mentoring We've had various team members come aboard here from other places who were of the impression doing things like telling a customer to go get a new credit card to cover a down payment was "normal operating practices for all dealerships" & shocked to learn we don't and WON'T do that kind of stuff. I've never worked at another dealership so I don't know any differently I guess. But little moments like that really make me value and appreciate my team here.

Great honest video and so true. I used to farm and rented out a shed to a RV repair shop. 2/3 of their work was damage from ingress of water. Roof is Number one problem as described. Should be checked yearly and re-sealed with professional mastic. This is often with gummy mastic which always remains sticky or a very high quality professional polyurethane sealant. Problems on roofs often start when they have been walked on causing cracking of sealant. On sides problems often occur when after market things like bike racks have been bolted on. If you can borrow a meter for detecting moisture on walls, take it with you. To fix these problems, all the inside has to be ripped out and rotten wood replaced. When constructed wood is never treated prior to installation and is usually cheap so rots easily. Repair cost is never cheap, starting at $1000 upwards and you can end up with a bill for more than RV/camper is worth... Have seen this happen many times which is gut wrenching for customers, so buyer be VERY aware!...

One place we have learned to check with a used RV is the floor of the Slide out itself. Some manufacturers use a woven tarp material on the bottom outside of the slide. This material is not really waterproof when you get the big down pores when the slide is out. The slideouts should have a drip edge to prevent water working it's way into the underside of the wood flooring. We've seen this on a number of units we have gone to look at. Certain manufacturers use a solid water proof material under the slides with a drip edge to prevent this. There are a few youtube videos that demonstrate the problem. Thank you for showing the ugly side of poor maintenance.

Removing a screw from the upper and lower corners of the camper trim strip and finding it rusted is also a good sign to either run or negotiate a better price. Also, if you are finding ants in your RV, you probably have a leak as the ants also need moisture to survive, Personal experience where I learned a lot about how cheaply campers are made. DYI repairs are a learning experience and heighten your awareness if potential issues.

Our 2007 Wildwood 27RB was Totaled out by two Shops for rear corner bottom under floor water damage. Under the 2/3 Bath and opposite Bunk Corner. It ruined some wood underneath. Was Black and pulp. Structurally not good. Was told $9K damage. No Shop would touch it. Nobody could figure out where water got in or came from. I resealed the roof ends and corners every year like you showed. Around Any other roof item. Even Clearance Lights all around. Nobody figured it out and then it was so bad it had to be pulled off the road. Was only 4 years old. My Insurance paid out $9500. Current value at the time. We never replaced it. Had my Dad’s F-250 and 5th wheel for a year, but had to sell as part of his Estate. Then I had a Stroke. So now 5 years later not sure yet I could physically deal with all the Setup/Teardown activities. Load on wife mostly. She’s Not wanting that. I’ve still got the Bug. Lots of Hoteling this past year. Josh, you missed a huge red flag, DELAMINATION! When you were describing the problems in that outside compartment the delamination was so noticeable, I can’t believe you didn’t mention it. People need to know when a camper starts to delaminate it’s a very costly fix, and if it’s not properly fixed it will spread. I would walk away from that camper fast! Also removing screws and looking for rust is another good tip. All in all a very good video, thanks for taking the time to make it.

Thank you Josh you just saves me from a $24,000 mistake. I work construction and live in my old 1987 prowler lynx m31z And ive been looking for a new rv Lets face it my old girl is getting ready to retire from the full time position it now has and probably will be donated to a family that my be in hard times so they could use her for a little stress reliever vacation once in a while. Well back to the first part. I recently discovered a rv from a dealer hear in ND which was exactly what I was looking for at first. 32 ft long a slide out air conditioning. You know all the great things my old rv doesn’t have. I inquired about it online and bam with in 20 min they were calling me. When are you able to come in and we can sit down and get you in this rv. They even dropped $4000 off the price it was listed at all without me even seeing it in person. Well i seen your video and I brought a telescoping ladder with. But I noticed some of the things you pointed out in the video on the interior. It had some little blistering in the right rear corner of the roof. I asked them is that normal they replied yes that’s nothing to worry about at all in a used rv As they shift and wiggle when transported around. Then on the side window in the bedroom I could see discoloration where h20 had been running down the wall. I asked about it they said a vent cover had been leaking and it was repaired absolutely nothing to look at. Well I thought to myself yeah sure. Next I inspected the out side compartment and low and behold upon the knock test the back corner was well if i put a 24 pack in it it would have probably fell through on the road. I didn’t say anything about that. They said so you read to sign a couple papers and start enjoying your new rv. I said well there’s one more thing. And went to my vehicle and got the ladder out they didn’t realize what I grabbed I went to the opposite side of the rv from the 2 salesman that were laughing about what ever they were talking about when i was away. And started extending the ladder the salesman came around the corner saying sir sir you cant go up there our insurance won’t allow that. I said oh ok Played dumb and said well i just want to look up there The said no absolutely not for safety reasons. I said ok. Are you positive it’s because of insurance reasons and not the fact that you’ve been lying to me about the concerns i had inside. I was asked to leave there rv business and to never come back. Thank you for saving me from a nightmare I would have never known about before your video. I wish you guys were closer to me so I could purchase from you

I've sold 8 or 9 RV's in my lifetime so far and it's critical to be honest in your ad because most who look at your RV will see the problem you failed to mention, then there's an issue of trust. I specify any problem areas in the ad and mention that I've tried to put in the good as well as the bad. It's appreciated.

Uncle Josh - what a fantastic service you've provided with this video! In the past I have purchased two cheap pop-up campers with EVERY ONE of your top five, thinking I would fix them. They were not cheap enough - in fact, I put so much time and materials into them they ended up costing more than a new pop-up. I'm echoing previous posters by saying "If you see any of these issues in a used RV that you're looking at, RUN!"

The other places too look are from below. We've seen torn underbelly fabric that allowed rot on the wood beneath the RV that would never have been found bt inspecting the inside. In addition, look at the underside exterior of the slide. We had to completely rebuild the slide on a camper because the water barrier on the underside of the slide did not go completely to the edges. At these edges, water running down the sides of the slide wicked into the wood and rotted it out. In addition, frame and underbelly damage can be found by looking underneath. This kind of damage is much more common in the western US where people do a lot of dispersed camping on BLM land. Finally, look for leaks in water lines and drains in the RV. Waterlines are especially prone to leak at junctions such as PEX fittings. Drains can leak where connected to sink or showers. Toilets can leak where sealed to the floor.

You make the perfect reason for getting a 'pro' to inspect the RV before you get hosed for a rolling pile of crap that you will lose thousands of dollars on, unless one has watched this video. In that gem you were going thru, looks like at about 7:30 or so the side wall above the storage compartment door and under the window look like some delamination going on as well. That roof leak at the ladder really did a number on that one.

A lot of this is stuff 1st timers just know nothing about It's crazy to many how many RVs we sell without folks ever asking about the roof Then again.. maybe that's shaped by the fact I actually show the roofing on stuff? I dunno...

Another benefit of a bright flashlight is that you can shine it sideways on walls to see suspicious spots of waviness, which might be missed due to patterns or lack of light. See how it could have helped at 6:22. There the light above it helped, but a flashlight could find such clues anywhere you looked. Same at 7:54, and of course especially to see deep into dark places. And a really bright flashlight will help even in daylight. This works also to find subtle low/high spots in bare floors.

The roof separated from the front cap of my new 30ft travel trailer. Warranty work. I got it to the dealer I bought it from. They had it for the whole camping season. Their repair attempts were nowhere near acceptable. I contacted Coachman. I explained the situation. The representative was really surprised by the defect and more disappointed at the dealers' handling of the defect and quality of repairs. They charged the dealer in Illinois to ship my travel trailer to the factory in Indiana to get it fixed correctly and shipped back to them. Thank Coachman! ❤😊

Great video, don’t forget to check the water heater in gas and electric as I didn’t do, mine worked fine on electric but would light and die on gas because the unit had frozen enough to pinch off the exhaust pipe inside the heater, it was a complete replacement to fix the issue.

We purchased a used motor home knowing that we would have the engine checked, replace tires, and possibly problems with plumbing because they had NEVER winterize the unit after moving from the south to the Northwest. It was winter when we purchased and first time out the AC died in both the roof unit and the engine, couldn't shower because the inside water heater line had a crack in it, and the black tank was full of pyramids. But for the very low miles on it and the price we still came out okay with all the repairs and thank goodness no body leaks it has a lifetime roof seal.

Good advice! No just for buyers, but for owners too. Seeing warning signs of trouble, early on, can save you a lot of time and money. I caught a leak like that, around a window, on one of my trailers, and was able to fix it BEFORE it became a major problem. Another time, I had just bought a new trailer and discovered some discoloration in the flooring after towing it in the rain. It was still under warranty and was repaired, but had I not noticed it right away, I would have had a mess on my hands. Again, I say, "Good advice!"

Great advice and video on what to look for on a used camper. That should be helpful for those buying a used camper. When you mentioned doing more videos like this or videos with information. May I suggest You do a video on camp essentials and tips/tricks for new campers or up coming camper owners. Aimed at people who have never used a travel trailer perhaps. Another one could be a how to video on how to maintain the slide outs on a camper. Or when towing your camper how to protect your glass wear in the cupboards. Things of that nature. Just a throwing a few suggestions out there.

Boy that camp trailer is in bad shape from multiple leak areas and damage. I like that you showed this and now would like you to take this same camp trailer and one by one tell us how to properly fix/take care of all these issues. That to me would be most valuable. Also is there some rvs that are worse or better at bot having these leaks I know you can't say brand names but a yes or no is better than nothing and also just let us know how long a well kept/maintained and not stored in a covered area or garage should last in general without worrying about leaks/malfunctions. Thanks for your informative info this kinda thing makes me Leary about getting a RV WHETHER it be a towable or a Motorhome.
