It's because if you watched the finale of the originals he vowed to stick by Klaus even if it's just darkness and pain they will go through it together and in legacies the necromancer told Hope that Klaus wasn't at peace and wasn't going to find peace until Hope does meaning that Elijah is not at peace because he's keeping or trying to keep Klaus calm

Elijah decided his time on Earth was done for 2 reasons: 1. His role was to help his brother find Salvation and Redemption and Klaus found through Hope 2. Elijah found another reason to live along the way, Hayley. But when she was no more, everyone else in his family had a clear future whereas he had nothing to do (apart from going back to Monosque and playing the piano IG). But also, what sucks, Elijah was right in Season 1 "There are consequences for those who care". He let her in, she loves him, and he was unfortunately partially responsible for her death...we sucks...so much... At least we can have faith that he found peace and had that dance with Andrea.

And we will get to see Elijah and Hailey together again. I assume now that the other side is gone forever and hell doesn’t exist anymore that the afterlife went back to how it was before? I always thought of the afterlife as a mirror to our world and our brief glimpse to Haileys was just that...

They deserved so much better!!! Everyone kind of had their happy ending. From the get go, they gave us so few moments of them for just letting them die in the end, in the worst way possible. They didn’t at least give us a scene from the afterlife-that dance that Hayley was waiting. It’s so terrible that they destroyed everything they’ve been building through five seasons. Hayley and Elijah were the best couple of the entire show undeniably and they had so much potential. I HATED the way Hayley died. It was the worst thing ever. It made no sense. Elijah was rooting always to protect her and he ended up letting her die, while not being able to recognize her. Also he started to get so much hate in and out of the show that he didn’t deserve. All of you don’t get that he wanted to protect the people he thought, at the time, were his family, like he always did. He stayed true to himself. He didn’t betray his real family nor the love of his life. HE DIDNT HAVE HIS MEMORIES. When he got them back, he broke upon repair and he ended up blaming himself AGAIN for something he couldn’t have known. All this was so disrespectful to both the characters and the audience. Every time these two were trying to be happy, something was there to destroy those moments. They didn’t get to live together at least for sometime. They tried giving them something in the first episodes of season four but then they destroyed that as well. The fifth season for them was by far the worst and I’m not comforted that Elijah died and went to find Hayley in peace. I wanted to see that and ideally I wouldn’t have killed them in the first place. I would have given them some sort of a chance, a future, a life together because they were the best couple and they had such a true love between them. I mean they gave Cole and Davina the best ending and forgot completely about these two. Such a robbery in my humble opinion. And I know that most fans believe exactly what I do. It’s been 3 years and I’m still beyond mad and devastated. That’s how much I loved them❤️ Ps: And for all of you saying that he saw her in France and they were friends and he should have saved her...A) He saw her probably one or two times B)Who would YOU save? A person you have seen two times or a person that you believed that was your family? You have to try and understand his perspective and not judge so harshly Ps2: I am aware that they don’t exist in real life but I tend to bond with the characters, as many ppl. Also these things(not the vamps and the witches ofc) can happen in real life as well, in an other way. Many of the things and the situations we see in shows or movies reflect real stuff and real emotions. From where do you think they get inspiration?
