Tbf Luffy got advantage coz his rubber body allow him to move faster than normal human body. Just think like this, normal legs need to manually kick to increase the speed of shave, Luffy's legs basically will do that automatically, bouncing back and forth.

8:32 If you go back and watch the episode where the Straw Heats destroy the Franky House to avenge Usopp, in the first fight, when he destroys the armor of the first one who comes in front of him, Luffy charges a gom gom gatling that makes his arms turn red. That was a hidden clue of the Second Gear. Also around the time these episodes were broadcast, an animated movie came out in which in the final battle Luffy is about to enter Second Gear while losing control of his attack, but is stopped by Zoro and Sanji in combo, who exclaim that if he had continued he would have reached such a power that he would have destroyed the place where they were in the movie

Explanation of Second Gear (maybe a spoiler): So, the Second Gear is basically a transformation Luffy developed to keep up with the CP9 members and all of the rokushiki techniques they have, in which he pumps his blood at an insane speed which strenghts him and makes him faster but at the cost of his life becoming a little shorter every time he uses it. I don't remember if this is explicit said in the anime and that is why I made this coment, hope this helps. Edit: His body can only handle the pressure of his blood because it's also made of rubber.

And that's why cp9 need years of training to master the technique, cuz they are not made of rubber, therefore needs time to slowly adjust and increase their durability. And they are kicking the ground ten times in order to increase their blood circulation, something Luffy can do by simply pumping his blood vessels manually/directly. 🤭

Fun fact, this isn’t actually the first time we seen someone use the shave technique. Captain Kuro was using an unrefined version of it back in syrup village with his pussyfoot maneuver. Oda confirmed in the manga that if Kuro trained it more he would’ve unlocked the full potential of shave

So when this gear stuff first came out, people were surprised and loved it, but of course you had the people complaining too. They would say: "oh this came out of nowhere, why did they off screen his training for it, etc." But you guys have the benefit of knowing something we didn't know when this episode first came out. Spoilers ahead Luffy having Vice Admiral and hero of the marines, Garp, as the one who raised him and trained him re-contextualizes this and a lot else in the show. Because yes, it is kinda dumb for Luffy to just see Soru and instantly be able to use it, but it makes sense when you understand he has been trained specifically to be able to use it since he was a kid! As for what Second gear and third gear are doing to his body specifically, you'll find out about that later ;)

Luffy basically just has high battle sense. And when he saw them using soru, he got the theory behind how it worked. Then he used his own rubber method to execute the same thing to his body. So it's not related to training etc. he doesn't need training for that. He just observe, understand, and apply basically. So there's nothing wrong with it. If people complain about it, then they are simply overthinking stuffs.. hahaha

For note Luffy came up with gear second during movie, its not copying cp9 techniques. It's his own technique he came up with during movie when he was punching really fast beyond his limit and he discovered his hands actually heated and became more powerful. Though Cp9 techniques and g2 are similar
