Welcome to Gastek Pool & Gas Services KZbin channel were you will learn about gas pool heaters. Today I am teaching about gas pool heater bypasses and what to look for if it's broken.
A broken Hayward bypass causes the unit to knock and bang or sound like there is rocks inside. If you have this sound when the unit is on, you have a broken bypass and need to replace it.
Please use caution when working on gas appliances. Make sure to turn the electric off as well.

I had this exact problem. Thanks for the video. This information is hard to come by elsewhere. Got everything working thanks to you. I also had a frozen bypass (a new one comes with the kit) and a bad thermostat.

I got the old dial knobs..probably 1998. H400. Bypass is in ok shape, thermostat was a goner and put in a new one, still have knocking and some surging noise before it shuts off. It will fire it self back up a few seconds later but won’t stay on. Basically the water won’t get hot enough in the spa to really enjoy. Tubes look amazing and clean. Some steam concerns however, only because it shows some moisture on the metal lid? Help!?!

Hello, great video / very helpful. I am not having the banging sounds but my heater doesn't seem to be working as good as it used to (water is not warming as fast as I remember). Could my bypass be stuck causing the heater not to heat the water as fast as it should? Maybe its sort of the opposite of what happens when you hear the banging?

This sounds exactly like what is wrong with my H250,, however, in addition to the banging mine overheats rapidly and I get an SF code. Does it still sound like the diverter is the problem? Thanks

This video seems pretty stait forward, but having never worked on one of these, what should be done with gas connection and the electrical leads?

Shut the gas valve off. And flip the breaker for the heater off.

thanks for the video. Do you recommend replacing the thermostat when putting a new By-pass kit in and if so anything else? I believe the shaft probably deteriorated as I found my valve spring up near my salt cell. Don't want to take apart until I have a new by pass kit. Its on a Hayward H400IDL2 heater. Older one probably '05-'07
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 10 жыл бұрын
Yes you should replace the thermostat when doing this. Just make sure the nuts are in good shape because if some are rusted and you try to remove you could snap it off and then you have a bigger issue.

After watching your video I was convinced this was our issue with our H100ID1 pool heater. Then I read some of the comments and noticed that you mentioned to someone else that if the heater shuts down then a broken bypass valve may not be the issue. I am hoping that someone will see my comment and advise me. Upon turning the dial on the heater powers up and will get to a first attempt with igniting. The popping and rattling starts and you can see the hose with the incoming water from the pool to the heater shaking around. Before the heater switches over to running mode and ignites it gives up on attempts and turns off. Could this still be the broken bypass or could it be the high limit switch, water pressure switch, or wires harness parts? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your helpful video too!

Does the heater actually ever light? Knocking and banging of the heater is a sign of poor water flow and or a bad bypass. It won't make these noises unless the flames are present. What is happening is that if you have a water flow issue or a broken bypass, water coming into the heater isn't sufficient and the little amount of water that does flow into the heater is heated and boils and that creates steam. The steam is what causes the sounds.

My Hayward pool heater is doing this. I first thought the squirrel cage. Lower had something lodged in it. It would ang, pop, and sound like it's about to jump off the little slab it's on. BUT as soon as the flame lights, it does this almost instantly. If says within 10 secs. Makes me wonder if the water could even come to a boil that fast. Maybe if there was very little water in it I suppose. Any input would be great. Especially if you diagnosed this issue. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I attempted this repair and all was going well but the new diverter piece conflicts with 2 of the copper heat exchanger pipes coming from heater. Has this ever been an issue for you, if so how did you resolve it? thanks

Hey great video I have a question I took the header cover off and noticed that the plastic peace is still intact but looks thinner than the one you have on video. But I was getting gravel knocking noise you think it might need a new piece that's thicker?
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the original equipment is very thin. In fact if you can bend it it is probably on the way out. Just make sure you aren't getting poor water flow because of a dirty filter or a valve not turned correctly.

I have the Hayward H400 "Californian" it says "specifically made for California pools and spas", any difference? What is the specific name of the part? Should it be readily available or a special order item? Tackling this tomorrow!
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 8 жыл бұрын
+submarineaz Since you are in California they are called LoNox systems but all of these parts that I show in the this video are the same. One question though, does your system have a digital display or knobs for setting temps and on/off? If you have the older unit with the knobs, that is a very old system and I personally wouldn't spend any money on it. Also if the unit you have does have the digital display on it, you need to asses the condition of the interior of the. If you have burner tubes rusting out it probably would be wasted money as well to repair this.
@submarineaz
@submarineaz 8 жыл бұрын
+GASTEK Pool & Gas Services I am in AZ actually. Yes it has the digital display. I am hoping our relatively dry air cut down on the rust but our hard water may corrode these from within. I really appreciate your help and knowledge
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 8 жыл бұрын
+submarineaz OK since you have the unit with the digital display you should be able to get the parts and repair your unit. If some of the nuts on the header look rusty, I would pre-soak them with some WD-40 before trying to take them off. Spray them and let it soak overnight.
@submarineaz
@submarineaz 8 жыл бұрын
They were just covered with grime, no rust. BTW, PB Blaster works a lot better than WD40 for rust, impressive too since it's an As Seen on TV product lol. My local pool store had no listing for the parts but I was able to locate ones that work on Amazon of all places. Part numbers are wildly different but reviews stated they work for my specific model. Got everything for just what the pool store wanted for the thermostat which they didn't have anyway. Should all be here this week!

My H150 Hayward heater turns on for about 15 seconds and shuts back down. Other days it will keep running just fine. Is that most likely the bypass or is it more likely low gas pressure since it is competing for gas with our furnace?
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 8 жыл бұрын
+funkpelts1 A broken bypass makes the noise like rocks in the unit. It usually does not shut the unit down. Does your unit have a digital display or a dial on the front of it?
@funkpelts1
@funkpelts1 8 жыл бұрын
+GASTEK Pool & Gas Services It just shuts down doesnt really make any noises . I have 1.5 inch piping and have wondered if that makes my system barely able to achieve enough gpm. Mine has dials for spa and pool serring and a selector switch in the middle.
@Gastekservices
@Gastekservices 8 жыл бұрын
+funkpelts1 - If it' is just shutting down then you have another issue not related to the bypass. Since you have no digital display you would need to start checking with a volt meter to see what is causing this issue. You should consider hiring a company that repairs gas pool heaters to come out and check it out.

I have found over the last 20 years, Hayward may cost less but their products are garbage! You get what you pay for in pool equipment. I usually go Pentair. Raypak for heaters. To each their own I guess! I'll never buy Hayward anything after using their products for 20 years and dealing with their customer service! Junk. :-(
