Thank you, @Mike Sanchez!!! This is exactly what I was looking for "How to set up the pump and filter". I never thought about using PVC piping and turn off valves. That is so much more stable and practical. The 1 1/2" versus 1 1/4" was brilliant. These small but essential changes are what make a project so much more successful. Thank you for doing all of the hard work for us and then making the videos.

I kinda got long winded, but for anyone like me who had never done anything like this before, I watched 50+ KZbin videos on the subject . . .but only a few gave the details I needed. I haven't made any videos in a while due to out of state work (I'm a commercial contractor), but I plan to this summer. If you need any additional information just comment and I'll respond. Mike, you did a great job laying everything out and planning your hardware. The only thing that I would have done differently is installing “unions” before and after you shutoffs. The shutoffs go bad especially if you have hard water, minerals in the water. To change your shut offs, you would have to cut out the shutoffs and then re-plumb. Yes, unions cost about $10 to $12 each but it’s worth it. In New York State we have hard water from our wells and I change out my shutoff every two years. Best regards, Richard

Rich, yeah you’re absolutely right. At the time I bought every union Lowe’s had - and Home Depot was completely out . . . so that’s my excuse. We have City water here which is still kinda hard, but after 3 years everything still looks good - maybe because we have a pretty good water softener. Thanks

Smart man! You'll be so much happier with a sand filter - there really is no comparison between what the pool came with and a sand set-up. I never mentioned in my video that I also increased all the pipe dimensions from 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" . . . there are tons of videos on KZbin from people that did this. I initially though that it wouldn't make that big a difference - and I was wrong - huge difference! But as time goes by you'll do little upgrades here and there until your pool is absolutely perfect. Thanks for the comment!

Hello Mike! Hope you are well. First off, I want to thank you for your replies and for answering my questions. I'm almost ready to begin my pool project but I need a few things first. Mike, can you please put the link to where I can purchase the pool bond kit for the Hayward pump/motor. I know how to navigate & look online but honestly...I don't know what to look for. I want the set up you have since I have the same Hayward pump. Would yoy ever use flexible pvc pipes? Do you recommend it? About bonding & grounding: I noticed the wire going to the ground rod but where is it on the pump/motor with the basket? Are there other methods to bond the pump/motor that you know of & can recommend other than your method? Also, I'm not using 2.5" pvc but using 2" pvc pipes for better flow so I need a reducer for the 1.5 hoses right? Also what size unions & elbows do I get with a 2" pvc pipe? How many unions & elbows should I have and what size do they need to be?Also, should I or do I even need to bond & ground my wide mouthed Hayward skimmer to the steel rod too? I have the sacrificial anode with the small copper wire attached. This seems so ridiculous after seen your videos, but is it even necessary to dig a trench? I've seen videos where people dig a trench with wire everywhere, including bonding the skimmer. Ugh....! I noticed you didn't do any of that! Your way all the way!! Mike you have the best set up I've ever seen!!!

Hello Mr. Mike! I am a fan of your pool videos. I never get tired of watching them! They have been very helpful. I have a favor to ask that I'm sure others can benefit from. Can you please do a video of how you installed the anode for bonding your pool? I would like to see a close up of the process involved. I can't see the copper swirl wire on the video & the wire that routes to the rod very well. I know you are a busy hard working guy & on the road, but when you have the time, can you please do a video just on how you properly & safely bonded your intex pool? I'd like to see more close ups of the bonding process. Can you show close ups of the anode & the copper wires that routes to the rod? Can you show us how you screwed the copper wires to the rod? I would like to see a cliser look at how you screwed the copper wire from the pump to the rod? I want to better understand how it all works? Is all the trench digging around the pool for bonding everything like the skimmer really necessary? I think your way works best. Trenching seems too laborous! Your method with the PVC piping, the valves etc..is so organized & looks so cool!!
@jollyrupp41712 жыл бұрын
Can you also show how you screwed the copper wires on to the rod on the cement slab? Can I put a rod on the dirt?
@mikesanchez96542 жыл бұрын
@@jollyrupp4171 The grounding rod assembly is pretty straightforward. For the rod to work properly, it needs to be driven at least 36" (3 feet) into the soil. I bought the rod at Home Depot and it was 6 feet long. BTW it's a steal rod that's coated with copper - not solid copper . . . otherwise it would be pricy. So I cut it to a 3-1/2 foot length and hammered it into the ground until just a few inched was above ground level. The stranded copper wires that come from the bonding anode and the other from the motor are connected to the rod with "acorn nuts". The acorn nuts are made of solid brass to be a good conductor . . . they slide over the rod and your wires connect with a bolt on the acorn nut. I'm about to set up my pool for the summer season because I take it down for the winter, so in a few weeks I'll make that video you requested - just give me a little time. Also, be aware that this video you watched is nearly two years old and what I have now is a completely different set up. To see my latest pool video type in: Mike's Intex Pool & Deck Update. Mike...thank you for all of the time that you have taken to create the video's of your Intex pool over the last year! You have done a great job!! At the end of this summer season, it would be great to have a "wrap" everything up for the summer putting the pool away and any other thoughts you might have as you close everything down. What is the approximate size of the rectangular concrete pad that the pool filter/plumbing all sit on underneath the deck? I would estimate it to be about 8' x 12'...but would be interested in the actual dimensions.

Thanks for the reply. The pad for all the plumbing stuff is actually only 6x10 which still gives me enough room to service and maintain everything.

Mike, thank you for your quick response. Can you tell me the exact name of the bricks you are using to support the pvc pipes. I remember you put great emphasis on how important it is to NOT let the pvc plumbing sit on the dirt without proper support. What kind of clamps do I need to get to screw down to secure the pvc pipes?
@mikesanchez96542 жыл бұрын
All I did was buy a 4x4 post from Home Depot and cut it down into blocks roughly 6” long. The clamps that have the rubber sleeve I bought on Amazon because Home Depot didn’t carry a 2-1/2” clamp of this type with the rubber. Just remember to use the blocks AS you’re building your set up - you can’t go back afterward and lift the pipes to slide the blocks under since everything will be glued in place. And clamp the pipes to the blocks once you are completely done with everything - it should be the last thing you do . . . in case you need to equally space the blocks.

Is a Hayward Offline Chlorinator ok to use with a pvc set up or do you recommend an In- line chlorinator? What size PVC did you use? How many valves should I have and where should I have them? Mike you are best! I know I can do this thanks to your videos & replies to your subscribers. Thank you!
@jollyrupp41712 жыл бұрын
Now that I'm watching your video again & take another look closer, I can see the cut posts painted gray with the PVC resting on with rubber clamps. I can see it matches the gray posts used for the deck. Glad I asked.
@mikesanchez96542 жыл бұрын
@@jollyrupp4171 To be honest, it's really just personal preference when it comes to which type of chlorinator you use - as long as you have SOMETHING. I chose to use an in-line chlorinator only because it seemed to be a better set up. On the PVC size, the original pool piping was definitely smaller . . . 1-1/4" I think. So I increased it to 2-1/2" to get better water flow and filtration (think fire-hose verses garden-hose). If you run into an issue where a fitting is smaller in diameter than everything else you decided, reducers can be used without a problem . . . yes water flow will be restricted at these points, but the restriction will be so minimal that it won't make a difference. For the valves, you need at least one valve to shut off just prior to the pump filter. When it's time to open that filter, without a valve to shut off water coming from the pool, water will spew out and it's hard to get the cap back on with water flowing out. I have two additional valves, one for the jet and one for the waterfall - so I can run water to one or the other. Without the valves, water would run to both locations at the same time and appear weak . . . because it's flowing to two different locations. It makes the waterfall look pretty sad . . . kinda like taking a shower while at that exact moment the washing machine is filling up with water.

You have bonded the pool pump the the pool water, but the pool the house. What you have done is grounded the pool pump and water (this seems weird to say) to the earth with the ground rod. There is still a Potential for there to be a difference between the ground wire at the pool pump in the whip to the alternative earth ground you have driven if it’s not bonded to your house mechanically in a non reversible fashion.

@mikesanchez96543 жыл бұрын
Valerie, My pool is 18 feet in diameter so I made my pad 20 feet around so I'd have a one foot walking area surrounding the pool to skim. When I poured the pad I continued the concrete under the deck - so it's one large pour. The deck is 12 x 12 x 17 triangle, so that's roughly the size of the slab underneath. The shed is not sitting on concrete - it just appears that way. I only poured a "porch" in front of the door.

Hi Mike. Love the detail of your videos. I know this is an older video and you have upgraded your pool since this. My question is more about your PVC plumbing so that’s why I’m commenting on this specific video instead of the newest video. I actually have the same Intex 18’x48” round pool as well. Tomorrow I’m going to start setting up our Hayward sand filter. I have all of my 1.5” PVC piping, ball valves, 90° swoop elbows, etc. The only connection I’m having a hard time finding is the entrance to the pre filter. Would you happen to remember what you used there? Granted, I don’t have the big Pro Series filter that you have. I have the smaller VL40 something or other Hayward Sand filter. I’m about getting to the point of unbolting the pump from its base and bringing it to the store with me so I can see what fits.
