Hayward T15 salt cell troubleshooting
Hayward T15 salt cell troubleshooting. Be sure to watch Pool Rescuers video and a tip when trying to troubleshoot your hayward T-15 salt cell.
How I Learned this
After becoming a Hayward warranty station, I quickly noticed a trend in the salt cell warranty claims that were being filed on the Haward T15 salt cells. The calls come in from the customers informing me that the salt cell was no longer producing chlorine and that the cell was reading low salt. I always ask the customer if the cell was cleaned and they inform me that they had cleaned the cell. More often than not I get on the customers property to see that the cell was in fact cleaned, but the sensor was still blocked with calcium. Once the cell was properly cleaned, the cell often starts producing chlorine again due to a clean sensor. See our video on what to look for before you run out and buy a new cell. All credit on learning this goes to the best Hayward district manager.
Make sure you have the proper equipment.
It is not a good idea to clean a Hayward T15 salt cell in a bucket of water and acid mixture. You need to make sure you have the proper equipment. You can buy the recommended Hayward salt cell cleaning stand HERE. Once you have the proper stand you can clean the cell properly.
What to look for
When your Hayward T15 salt cell is saying that the salt is low in your pool and is not producing chlorine, follow these steps
Test the pool water to make sure that the salt content is between 3200-3500ppm
During cleaning, make sure the cord side is down.
Finally, make sure the cells sensor is clear of any calcium build up.
This is a picture of a clean cell but a dirty sensor. You can see the sensor is located where the cord goes into the cell and can be seen in the bottom middle of the salt cell pleats.
This is a picture of a clean cell and a clean sensor
Reinstall the cell
With the pool water in proper range of salt, cell cleaned, and sensor clear, it is now time to put the cell back into your equipment. It does not matter here what size the cord is on. It also does not matter if the cord is facing up or down. Ensuring that there are no leaks at the unions is all that matters when re installing the cell.
Once the cell is back in place turn on the filter pump. The Hayward T15 salt cell will go through its run cycle and start counting down. When this stops, BAM! proper readings and generating chlorine. You just saved yourself from having to buy a new salt cell.
THAT DID NOT WORK POOL GUY
Ok, Ok, this is not going to work on every cell. I have gone out on calls where the sensor is dirty, I clean the sensor, and it still does not work. If after cleaning the cell it still indicates that the salt content is low, this is a bad cell. These cells are like batteries and will go bad. Listed below are links to be able to purchase a new salt cell. I recommend always going with the T15.

25,000 Gallons Hayward T-9
40,000 GallonsHayward T-15

Spot on Mr tech. My cell wasn’t reading the salt level properly and looked super clean. I looked everywhere inside and my cell is clear not a Hayward. But after a 12 minuet soak in a 4 parts to 1 part acid it works perfectly again.

For the past three years I've been cleaning my cell with the cord up, only because it's seem like the correct way to screw it on the base. Just a month ago my display read Low Salt 2700 PPM so I added two bags of salt which then read 3200 ppm but two weeks later my low salt light came back on and with a 2400 ppm so I added 2 more bags and did the bucket test for any leaks with a reading of 3000 ppm. Water evaporated evenly so i thought I needed to replace my cell and then I saw this video. I cleaned my cell with the cord facing down and now my system is reading 3800 ppm so I think it's working again and do hope this fixed the problem.

@@PoolRescuers Yes and almost a week later the my lever is reading 3700 PPM so I know its working. I think I put in 3 bags of salt thinking that was the problem, every two day my low salt light would come on.

I might have to finally try cleaning my cell. I've never had to clean it before. Vinyl liner pool with low calcium levels and with rain I don't have to add much water from the tap. The control panel is only reading 3300 ppm when the salt level in the pool is actually 4250 ppm (pool store). The 4250 ppm is my fault. I added salt at the beginning of the season without checking to see if the salt cell was reading salt levels accurately. I normally run the salt around 3500. The salt cell is shockingly 8 years old. I normally run the cell at around 30% for the 5 summer months. So I guess it really doesn't have that much use. I hope cleaning it will fix the readout. I'm going to just keep running it until it stops producing chlorine or the control panel read "too low salt" and won't run. When it does finally fail, I'll just switch to adding liquid chlorine for the rest of the season or until the price of new cells comes back down. The cost of a new T-15 cell is insane at the moment. They are asking $900 when just 6 months ago they sold for $500 to $600.

When the Hayward cells and sensors are clean they work excellent. I prefer them over the intellichlors. They’re not as a fragile.

So is the cell in service cord up or down or does it not matter? When he removed the cell it was cord up and when he reinstalled it was cord down??? How should it be when in service?

I get a voltage sensor short error code on my Hayward Omnilogic with the T-Cell 15, and the chlorinator diagnostics don't show anything except the cell temperature. I tried cleaning it with the plug up yesterday, with the 4-1 water/acid mix and the cleaning stand, but no joy. After watching this video, I'm trying it again cord down. Luckily the T-Cell is still under warranty in case it fails again.

@@PoolRescuers No joy 2nd time, but I checked all 3 fuses again and decided on a whim to replace the 20 amp fuse since the installation manual said it was for supplying the chlorinator current. I had visually checked all 3 fuses a couple days ago and they seemed fine. Couldn't see much difference between the old 20 amp fuse and the new one, but the chlorinator is working again. Probably should buy an ohm meter instead of eyeballing fuses.

Depends where you live. In over 10 years I have inspected my cell(s) quite a few times, but they never needed cleaning. In the western TN area the water from the Memphis aquifer is very soft, not much in the way of dissolved solids (except for the salt in the pool). In fact hardness is only about 40 ppm out of the tap. Soap lasts forever. I have to add hardness increaser to my pool to get to the recommended 200-400 ppm. But I used to live in TX and frequent cell baths in HCL/H2O were necessary.

Thank you for this video. My salt cell was reading so low it turned off even though the salt level is at 3700. I cleaned the cell very well with the 4:1 water:acid solution and it's working better now. It still reading lower than my measurements and the measurements at the pool store. Actual salt in my water is 3700 but the cell is only reading 2900. I'm wondering if it was take a day or so to come up to the correct reading??
