It does hit hard indeed. Kinda agree with ShadowEclipex too. What’s worse? Death, or being trapped in a vessel able to see everything around you but unable to partake or interact with anything for all eternity? I like to think in cases like that, when someone tries to break out the Evil God Sealed away for Eternity, the ‘Evil Go’ instead goes ‘Oh fuckin finally! Now I can go try one of those god damned cheeseburgers that everyone is talking about!’ and zooms off to the confusion and befuddlement of the heroes and cultists in the same room. Later on the Heroes are tracking the Evil God down but find him at a McDonalds begging them to let him have a burger because he has no money. I could make a whole short story about this prompt.

Damn and goddam have been bleached enough to not always be considered a curse, kind of like hell, though its still kind of on that line. But I think it has more to do with writing structure. He probably didn't want to repeat hopeless in the same verse that was supposed to rhyme. Hopeless and worthless are slant rhymes (they're almost rhymes, but not really, but it can still work with songs and poems), but hopeless and hopeless aren't anything, it's just repeating the word. And "sober and worthless" doesn't sound as smooth and "sober and hopeless/dopeless", so instead of trying to force it, he just changed the line altogether. Personally, I'll take the slant rhyme over repeating the word hopeless like that.
