Hazbin Hotel has had me in a death grip since it released and a large part of it is the music. Hazbin is a full blown broadway musical brought to animation and streaming and I'm here to check into the hotel.... I just had to...
Also, I used the terms SA and SW for s*xual abuse and s*x worker in the video as KZbin doesn’t like it when you say those phrases out loud.

I love everything that they are doing in this show especially darker topics that a lot of ppl want to be represented to get an understanding of what they went through. Lucifer effectively taking a support role for Charlie also fits his theme as the “ringleader” of hell, yes the man is in charge, but his main job is to hype up the other acts and prepare the audience, lay the ground work to make the acts themselves stand out even more as a result, while keeping the circus organised, hell we see it in “more than anything”, when he throws Charlie the spotlight is on her while he’s out of frame, not to mention his entire pocket dimension is themed after a circus tent. Works incredibly well for how he is presented to the audience
@AndragonLea

There's also the angle that he did take a leading role at one point and was discarded by his fellow angels and exiled to hell to be surrounded by the most horrific negative aspects of his initiative for it. It wouldn't surprise me if he took a more passive role because that massive hit made him doubt his own best judgement. If he's not in charge, he can't mess up... Again.

Definitely agree! I also agree with the other comments that say the show's pacing kinda makes it seem Charlie's daddy issues got resolved too quickly. To me, it helps to think of it as a lot of the other sinners in hell (including Husk and Alistor) are actually projecting Charlie's daddy issues to be more severe than it really is, because they have their own issues. They aren't wrong about Charlie being a very empathetic character that is in over her head at first (as well as inexperienced on what redemption actually is), but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the other sinners in hell have more severe mommy/daddy issues themselves, while the extent of Charlie's and Lucifer's familial issues is miscommunication.

I'd like to point out that when Angel gets pulled during Poison it not only shows his lack of control, but also shows how he does his best to appear like he actually is. Gets pulled, makes a sexy walk. Gets thrown to the ground, makes an ass-up pose. It both works as him trying to show himself as sexual for Valentino, or a simpler reference to the fact he's an actor. For real, the fact that Amir Talai tends to interact with official and fan-made content in-character as Alastor is wonderful; Blake Roman having nothing but respect for, and becoming friends with, Michael Kovach is so wholesome (Michael even gave him a Fat Nuggets plush at a con recently 🐷); Erika Henningsen already being so much like Charlie in real life is adorable; Joel Perez as a real person being the furthest thing from Valentino but clearly enjoying and killing his role is awesome; Jessica Vosk thanking the fanartists for making Lute look even more badass than she already is, is beautiful; and of course, the funniest one, Krystina Alabado openly telling the Internet about how much she loves Sir Pentious (“I swear it’s not because I voice Cherri Bomb,” she says haha) is just. The absolute best thing for my CherriSnake heart 🍒💞🐍 I swear, it’s just as amazing as Black Gryph0n making Alastor music even after getting recast, Krystal LaPorte also playing Cherri in some fan songs, Elsie Lovelock getting in on the action as Charlie every once in a while, Alex Brightman telling everyone how much he relates to Fizz, and Brandon Rogers joking about Blitzø basically being his impsona. Like say what you will about Viv and her writing, having actors this passionate is really what sells it. The hate the creator gets is SO blown out of proportion. I know it's Twitter, but I think it also has something to do with her audience because despite this show being for adults, most of the audience are teens, which explains why the majority of the fandom and hatedom are VERY immature. I was just absolutely blown away by this show. It really reminded me of those classic Disney movies with their music numbers. This show is a textbook example of how to do musicals right. They aren't just catchy pop songs. The songs themselves enhance the story, develop the character, and set the tone. You learn so much about these characters from just a short 2-3 minute song. There's no clunky or boring exposition. The songs tells you all you need to know about these characters and how they feel. Every song is there for a reason, each one serves a purpose.

I'd much rather creatives be honest about their creations than hypocritically try to please everyone just for the sake of pleasing people. Thank you for being genuine with your criticisms. I’ve seen a LOT of reviewers claiming the show is completely unwatchable and total garbage due to the fast pace. Which is just insanely dishonest. You just kinda have to accept that the plot moves quickly and you can have a lot of fun. IMO the fast pace was to save more room in season 2 for individual characters but we’ll just have to see what happens. Another thing is I feel like most critics on KZbin don’t get that the songs in this show convey the story. I’ve seen a lot act like they add nothing or “aren’t earned” when the song itself IS the explanation of a character motivation or showing development. If someone doesn’t like musicals that’s fine, but they can’t really call a musical garbage just because they don’t like the medium

That way whether you watch infrequently or binge, you still sit through less, if you do shorter series rather than shorter episodes, that only caters to short attention spans for binge watchers, which sounds pretty oxymoronic Broadcast TV has long series because they're cheaper to make and need to fill air time. Streaming on the other hand costs more to make generally since you need to persuade people to watch your thing over everything else, not just the other channels. So you either produce less episodes more frequently, or more episodes less frequently, and it seems like most shows have settled on a dozen episodes, a couple of years between seasons kind of balance between getting enough story in each season and staying in the public consciousness

More than Anything really is a special song! I didn’t catch some of the animation during it, but hearing you say that he sees her being surrounded by the angels’ spears is heartbreaking. It’s just one of the sweetest songs! I prefer Hell’s Greatest Dad for its catchy electro swing duet between Alastor and Lucifer, but I can’t deny the emotional impact of More Than Anything. Other side notes: Ready For This goes down as one of my top favorites because it’s such a joy to listen to. Stayed Gone is a song that, while I initially didn’t like it as much, it really started to grow on me the more I listened to the lyrics! It’s such a fun villain duet that I keep going back to! “Yes I know it’s been awhile since someone with style treated Hell to a proper broadcast. Sinners rejoice!” “What a dated voice!” “Between this and that, and that and this. Is nothing working?” “Ignore his chirping!” “Instead of a clout-chasing mediocre podcast.” “We’re looking at the future! He’s the shit that comes before that!” Alastor ending with “I’m gonna make you wish that I stayed gone” to counter Vox’s “…YOU stayed home”, is, well, “the sugar in the cream!”

This was an nice video essay. You did a great job breaking down what made the soundtrack great, especially the ones you picked. I don't buy music that often, but after listening to the soundtrack from the first set of episodes on repeat on KZbin, I immediately bought them as soon as they became available. Sure, there several things that could have been changed to improve the show, like writing and pacing. But for what we got, it's not bad! It was fun, well-made modern musical and with actual good music; we need more of this! And thanks for mentioning the ridiculous controversies. I know Viv has made some choices I don't fully agree with, but the fact that some people go through great lengths to sabotage her or paint her as an evil person is just awful and dumb.

lol, are you another water sign? You’ve had me ever since your treasure planet and you continue with amazing takes. Thank you for your commentary. It feels very earnest and heartfelt. In an environment where snark, anger, and bandwagon if is rewarded, your videos get me to tear up. Thank you

Something I want to say about Religious extremists is that Vivzie clearly understands Christian Lore and Mythology far better than anyone actually in the faith that isn't into demonology and such.

It's like Star wars viewers who know the movies, vs superfans who can rattle off the early Extended Universe, the retcons after the prequels, and the Disney wipe and partial recanonization. Most christians dont even recognize Lillith as the First Woman. It's simply not in the scope of their bible readings. They arnt going to recognize Solomon's Key, Dante's Inferno, or even "The devil went down to georgia."

"If Christ came back to Earth today, there is one thing He would not be; a Christian." - Mark Twain. Over 100 years ago and we still have the same problem; people who claim a name and title without understanding a single thing about the lessons being taught.

Boycotting this show is absolutely fucking ridiculous. The Twitter Mob will never die, but to just follow what they demand is a fallacy. This show had its flaws, but in regards to character background, depth, and progression, I've never seen a show do it better. It broaches very sensitive topics such as alcholism, divorce, sexual abuse, regret, love, forgiveness, and more, and I'm very happy to have kept my Prime membership just long enough to finish the season.

I so appreciate the joy and amusement in your voice when you talk about Lucifer, he deserves all the love. He's just a goofy lil guy and i adore his characterization to pieces

I LOVED this show. Yes, it’s not perfect, but you DO get to know and be attached to the characters, and I say this as someone who had no idea about this fandom/idea. I also really like that some of the pacing stuff honestly makes it harder to know some folk’s motivations. Yes, it’d be better to have at least 2 more episodes, but I’m hoping that having it be such a hit will give them more space for more episodes in the next season

Love this video! Thank you for covering this show and your song breakdowns. A lot of times, with Hazbin and Helluva Boss, it’s difficult to know what review videos are positive or negative. Glad to see a positive one for once outside of Saberspark. And thank you for being neutral about the drama that’s been surrounding Viv and her company for years and years. Everything you said about it is true. So thank you. Anyway, this is now one of my favorite shows of all time and I can’t wait for season two!
