Today I'm checking out the PILOT episode of HAZBIN HOTEL! I had been asked if I was going to be checking out the series when it arrives of Amazon Prime Video but I had not heard of it before. After doing a little digging, I found out this originated from an animated pilot made by KZbinr Vivziepop through crowfunding resulting in A24 picking up the series and distributing it via Amazon which is crazy so I wanted to check out the Pilot and see if it's something that might be up my alley and SPOILERS...it was HILARIOUS! #HazbinHotel

So regarding the Pilot's Production: The whole project started around 13 years ago and for around first 5 years it was basically just planning and preparation - you know, concept stages, creating the world itself, etc. After that, the Production itself spanned around 4-5 years and it ended around 2 months prior to the Pilot's Premiere. So yeah, this is literally Vivzie's life project.

Kind of funny how she made a character who was an Angel get her eye cut out from an Angelic weapon and still for so long thought Angels (herself) were indestructible and had no weaknesses and somehow didn’t know Angelic weapons could hurt/kill Angels.. it’s kinda like Zack Snyder made Darkseid a weak moron who somehow forgot the location of Earth where the ALE was located

"Kinda does defeat the point [having booze in a redemption hotel]" Learning to gradually ease off, whether with deeds or actual substances, is a very real practice. Since, ya know, very few people can handle quitting something cold turkey, it's actually quite reasonable to have the offending stuff while trying to redeem them of it overtime :P Not to mention, it's healthier both physically and psychologically to make a gradual stop

Plus, the bar is in the hotel in a save and controlled environment, with a no-nonsense but fair barkeeper who knows how to detect and deal with drinking problems. Alastor couldn't have made a better decision for the hotel regarding alcohol consumption

Yeah, there are a few things to note about how Hell works in this universe. Firstly there are two major types of demons. The first are Sinners, who are humans who have been damned to Hell after death. When they arrive in Hell they gain a demonic form that usually reflects how they died and is designed to make them hate how they look. Alastor is a notable example, seeing how his demon form is that of a deer, referencing how he died in a deer hunting related accident. Sinners cannot reproduce, are confined to the Pride Ring of Hell and are biologically immortal. The only way they can be killed is through the use of blessed weapons, which angels use during the Extermination, explaining why Hell is so overcrowded. The second type of Demons are Hellborn, which are exactly what they sound like. These are demons that were born in Hell. They vary a lot depending on how high up the hierarchy they are, but the lower classes are able to be killed with regular weaponry, whilst royals need the blessed weapons described before. Charlie is the only Hellborn in the main cast of Hazbin, but the sister series, Helluva Boss focuses a lot more on how the lower and upper classes of Hellborn live in this world. The Hierarchy of Hell basically works like this, from highest to lowest: 1. Lucifer. A fallen Angel. The King of Hell and the Sin of Pride. 2. Lilith. The First Woman and Lucifer’s wife. The Queen of Hell 3. Charlie Morningstar. Their daughter. A smol bean. 4. The remaining Six Members of The Seven Deadly Sins. Asmodeus. Satan. Leviathan. Mammon. Beelzebub. Belphegor. They each run a ring of Hell, kinda like Dante’s Inferno. 5. The Ars Goetia. A collection of 72 noble Demon families with very strong magic and rigid sensibilities. 6. Overlords. Powerful demons who have come into being by providing necessary advancements to Hell. Alastor is the Overlord of Radio, because he brought the idea of radio with him to Hell when he died. 7. Sinners. Described above. 8. Hellborn demons. 9. Imps and Hellhounds. The lowest of the low. Often working class or even slaves.

One thing in particular I love about this show is that, while it's very heavy on the crude humor and shit like that (which makes sense considering it's literally taking place in Hell) the core concept/main theme of the story is incredibly compelling. The idea of redemption for these horrible people could lead to incredibly emotional moments and character growth, or potentially saddening tragedy when perhaps a character isn't able to crawl their way out of the deepest depths of their sin and depravity, despite trying very hard. My point is, this episode is mainly comedic at its core, but the story itself I believe will actually be more emotional than anything else, which would be the main draw for me.

This series/universe (along with Helluva Boss) goes DEEP with religious references from literature and demon texts. Vivzie's got a whole complicated social/political system plotted out for her version of hell. Probably heaven, too, tbh. It's kinda funny how this weird little project has been turned into an A24 animated production with Broadway stars making up most of the cast.

The pilots VA cast did donation lives with one of the animators called Ashley. You can find it as Hunicast Hazbin hotel and stuff. Hours of stuff, the VAs antagonize the animator girl by flirting in their character voices and they do donation requests. Its fun. The actual show has a whole new cast. The fandom was very divided over it. Ppl still beef with the new voices. I personally think it works, and understand the logic behind the change, but of course i love the og cast. Cant wait for your series reactions! When are you reacting to the show? Do you plan to react to the spin off, Helluva boss? (Its in universe, but no connection to the hazbin storyline so far, with 1 and a half seasons)

There’s some small aspects about the characters life on earth which idk if it will be touched on in the series. Angel was an Italian mafia member who overdosed in the 1940’s Alastor was a serial killer and cannibal who ran a radio show and died in the 1930’s when a hunter mistook him for a deer in the woods. Not much is known on vaggie but apparently she died in 2012? Also all the designs and voices are changed for the new show, as this cast wasn’t ideal for an animated broadway musical show, the new cast is stacked with gorgeous singers with great voices, both up and coming talents (angels new actor, Blake Roman) and Iconic classic actors, (husks new actor, Keith David). You should also check out helluva boss, it’s the sister show set in the same universe but follows stories of the hellborn creatures and expands on the world building, introducing other big characters in this world like the 7 deadly sins, the arcs goetia and other hellish creatures in the hierarchy. helluva boss is all free on KZbin and it’s halfway through season 2 right now.

That was a fun reaction to watch, glad you enjoyed the pilot! You're definitely going to love the "Addict" music video about Angel Dust, and Vivziepop's other show Helluva Boss. (They're set in the same Hell, but Hazbin is the big plot show and focuses on sinners while Helluva Boss is about hellborn demons and their relationships. ) Viv recently confirmed that sinners cannot actually die (again) unless killed by angelic weaponry. They either respawn or their bodies knit back together. Kind of a horrifying thought, considering Hell has a sizeable population of cannibals among other nasties.

I can already see 1 problem with Charlie's order to Alastor. "I hereby order that you work at this hotel. For as long as you desire." As long as you desire, implies that he is not going to leave until he wants to. So even if Charlie or anyone else wants him to leave he is not going to, unless he himself wants to do so. Demons are known to be extremely crafty and cunning so there might be more to it than just this one point. Whether it plays into the story going forward or not, I obviously don't know but it is a theory.

I actually saw this pretty soon after it was released because KZbin wouldn't stop recommending it to me, and I've loved it ever since. Can't wait for the premiere on Friday! Commenting before watching, will edit after I'm done: I love when new people find this! If you like this, you'll also certainly like the spin-off, Helluva Boss. It's got two seasons so far, all free on KZbin on VivziePop's channel, and it's amazing, especially as the series progresses. Highly recommend! ...now off to watch this video and see your reaction to the pilot that started it all 😁 Edit after watching: you're a show choir kid? Then there's no "ifs" anymore, you will *love* Helluva Boss, even if only for the music! 😁 And the animation style is the same, too, since it's all in the same universe. There's even some prototypes of the Helluva characters in this pilot if you look closely 😊 Some background info on Alastair that the creators have talked about (which may or may not still be canon with the full show's release): he was alive in the 1920s, and he was a radio host in New Orleans. He was also a serial killer, and he learned voodoo magic while he was still alive, the same magic that makes him so powerful in hell. He was killed when he was shot by a hunter in the woods who caught him burying the body of one of his victims. That's why he looks a bit fox-like, as sinners' demon forms often (but not always) relate to how they were killed.

Animation on KZbin is a really awesome space filled with really well done projects such as this and you should definitely check more out (Murder Drones, Helluva Boss), but as far as this one goes, there is a whole world and lore attached to this setting, and while this show goes over the top circle of hell where all the sinners are located, there are many hellborn demons in a bunch of other rings. All of the main cast except the princess charlie are sinners tho, just so it isn't as confusing for you :} If you are a sinner that dies, your body reassembles unless you are killed by an angel's weapon, then you are gone forever

I do feel really bad for the VA’s in this episode the only one who didn’t get completely screwed over was Edward Boscoe since he got to replace Norman Reedus as Striker in Helluva. Usually when someone gets recasted they are given a different background role, it’s pretty much a form of compensation, Reedus didn’t do this cause he left in his own accord. Viv didn’t even invite them to the freaking premiere. They laid the foundation for these characters.

Since you love animation, KZbin has become a surprising source of quality independent series. Vivienne also created another series which was meant to be in the same universe, no word yet if that's still the case. Helluva Boss, which is currently in its second season. The pilot episode isn't canon anymore but I still recommend watching it first before watching the rest of the series. Worth noting also, two music videos (one just lyrical, but still great lyrics) connected to Hazbin Hotel and one more connected to Helluva Boss. All three are great. Other KZbin series worth checking out Murder Drones The Amazing Digital Circus which has a confirm first season coming.Same producers as Murder Drones. Also with a confirmed upcoming first season is a pilot based on a popular web comic , Lackadaisy. And one trying to take off, a first short came out too long ago with three more shorts coming with hope of a movie or series after, by ex Disney animator , James Lopez, Hullabaloo. And little extra, just for fun, a great spoof of late 80s anime, most likely just a one shot, but hopefully more, Punch Punch Forever. That's it for now.
