There is a doctor here on KZbin who analyzed the medical aspect of this show and what he said about Joel pulling it out was that he wouldn't have been able to ride with it still in. Had it still been inside while he was riding it could very well have done worse damage than what was initially done.

Hinders your movement, does more damage, this is an apocalyptic situation - what if the bat was used to kill an undead nad has spores on it? even if it doesnt, its so dirty that it's a high infection risk. Add in shock into it and you pull it out

Everyone keeps saying "why did he pull the bat out?" Well, consider the damage that could have been done by the rough ride on a horse. Either way, he's screwed, so give yourself a better chance to get away by making a quick decision and getting going. Keeping the shiv in, is only the right thing to do if you're getting immediate medical attention

I think Maria’s past also clouds her perception of Joel. You don’t become assistant D.A. (prosecuting attorney) without developing biases on people who commit criminal acts. Regardless of the circumstances I think she believes Joel will always be trouble.

But not Tommy. Who lied and said he was following Joel. When it was Tommy's idea to move to the Boston QZ. Ellie was right.
@Taewills
@Taewills Жыл бұрын
@@phoenixrising8231 I don’t think that was a lie. We haven’t been given a specific time frame of how long he followed Joel’s lead. Making a suggestion to go with the Fireflies instead of doing whatever they were doing doesn’t make Tommy a leader either. He’s a follower- sounds like he always will be one. (US military, Joel, Fireflies and now her). What annoyed me about Maria’s stance is she makes it sound like Tommy following someone else’s lead absolves him of any personal responsibility when it doesn’t. I’d also like to know how she survived for 13 years if not in the kill or be killed environment 🤔

@@Taewills based on what we do know Tommy being in the military. Already killed before. He killed the soldier who killed Sarah. Was about to kill Joel. I think Tommy initiated Joel to killing. But Joel readily took it up because of all his pent up rage. Hence Tommy saying there were other better ways to go about it (surviving). Even though Ellie doesn't have the details. She told Maria maybe she was smarter than Tommy. I took that to mean she has a moral compass. She wouldn't let Joel just go about killing innocent people. Like BOTH Tommy and Joel did. Tommy was the "disillusioned" one after his stint in the army. Probably his own PTSD. Joel gave him a job to keep him out of jail. When he asked Joel to bail him out. Tommy said it wasn't his fault this time. Meaning he's been to jail multiple times. Joel bailed him out multiple times. Tommy had a rifle. Joel had an Vietnam era knife. Probably belonging to his father. Once they got to the QZ. Tommy wanted a better life. He was searching. Joel continued on doing his bad things because he was dead inside.

This episode is one of the most powerful episodes they've done and the subtle changes they made with Joel's character from the beginning is blooming in this episode. Some people argued that the writers broke Joel's character in this episode, I feel otherwise. - Joel cried out for Tommy's help shows his trust in Tommy and that he is open to Tommy (as opposed to the game where he only looked at Tommy, which means he needed his help but can't even say it). - Joel is much more depressed because of his grief, the only way you can be this way is if you have a deep emotions within. - Joel is physically vulnerable (as opposed to the game where here is invincible)....physical vulnerability can lead you feeling helpless at times. - Tess's death made him felt that he failed again to protect his loved ones, intensified his helplessness. - He started to let Ellie in, which means he started to get emotionally vulnerable. - He saw the death of Henry & Sam, which reflected what could happen to him and Ellie. - Everyone has a breaking point, and Joel bottled up everything, when he ailed to protect Tess, and almost lose Ellie, he felt helpless and finally broke, and he can only break down to the one person he trusts the most. Joel's character in the show nailed it, it has depth much more than in the game, it applies to real life human psychology. Idk why those people still complain that Joel's character deviated. If anything, it's because the game's character lacks depth that they're surprised by real human psychology. As for resolve of Joel's decision, I think Joel had a whole night thinking, and he was about to leave unannounced, that's why he was in the stable earlier, he also said he was about to run off but changed his mind 30mins before Tommy and Ellie arrived... obviously there was a lot in his mind but, he has always been the protector, it's his instinct and perhaps he also didn't want Tommy to get into trouble. And man Joel and Ellie's argument scene had me teared up (I didn't in the game). Powerful performances from Pedro and Ellie. P.S. Igli is the voice of reason, perhaps an empath? 😁

I wish we’d gotten a scene between Tommy and Maria, after Joel tells Ellie they are parting ways. We can see if Tommy lies to Maria about who Ellie is, if he keeps up the ruse that she’s a firefly member’s kid, Maria can warn Tommy about trusting Joel and it gives the audience weight to the fact that Tommy is prepared to take Ellie the rest of the way. And then to your point, it lets the other scene breath before we get the reconciliation in the morning.

Everyone comments how stupid it is that Joel removes the bat which is true if he had help anywhere near and didn't need to run. Jumping on the horse and riding away with that in his stomach would tear his insides to shreds. Now, was that what he was thinking? I doubt it. But his best bet was that adrenaline would get him far enough away to get somewhere safe and start working on the wound.

Ok I’ll say it: Pedro is a bigger star and Hispanic (and looks it). Know one knows who, Jeffrey, is and is White (and looks it)… hence… it’s not because Jeffrey looks older, they are different ethnicities; and that’s why they would suck as brothers on the show. There you go.

Everybody reacts the same way, that you never bring up his daughter, and that's the problem. His refusal to deal with the thing that has had the biggest impact on his life is what has made him emotionally stunted and isolated. He could have had the kind of life Bill and Frank had or that Tommy and Maria are having. He could have had it with Tess, but he refused to allow himself to be anything but a miserable fuck. He mocks Tommy for all the choices he made, joining the military, joining the Fireflies, leaving the life Joel leads to look for something better. So, no one calls him on his refusing to deal with his own past and he just gets worse. He's a smuggler, a drug dealer, a killer and muscle for hire. Even in the game when he meets up with Tommy, Tommy offers him a picture of Joel and Sarah that he's managed to save all this time and Joel won't even look at it and Tommy drops the subject. Only Ellie can see that Sarah and his using her death as the lens he looks at everything and everyone through is his biggest problem. Not the infected or this world or survival. It's his cutting himself off from everyone as if that will protect him from what happened with Sarah. Yet people around him still die and always will. You can't live a life in fear over what you can't change. Most everyone alive in that world has suffered loss. The story is that Tess had to kill her own husband and locked her infected son in a basement to die because she couldn't face doing it herself. Ellie has had to make a choice that even Joel hasn't had to. It may sound harsh, but the truth is that he needs to get over himself. Either go lay down somewhere and die or deal with the past and live again but stop making other people have to treat you like something dangerous that might go off at the wrong word being spoken.

Arguably, I think Gabriel Luna is probably the best casting out of all of them in terms of already being similar to the character - his voice and demeanor is similar to how he is in interviews so he didn't have to work very hard to be Tommy. Obviously Pedro and Bella are excellent but they couldn't be more different than the characters they are playing, which why a lot of people had doubts initially (although I didn"t). Jeffrey Pierce would not have worked as Tommy with Pedro. That's a big mismatch imo. They are not convincing as brothers and Pierce is too old. Gabriel Luna is the perfect Tommy for Pedro Pascal's Joel.

Gonna disagree with Blake on the scene not having enough time to breathe. In the game, it's sandwhiched between two unnecessarily long action sequences, with absolutely no hints whatsoever as to Joel changing his mind. The show at least has the flashback to Sarah.
