It is never easy to join the “socialites” or the old money rich people even now during the modern times. Manny Pacquiao in our country is one. He has several homes in the upper class neighborhoods, in Beverly Hills, and a mansion in the province here in our country, like he is crazy rich how he was able to make his money grow. But as they said, even if his wife can get exclusive invites to buy from Chanel, LV, Hermes, they will never make it to the “upper social circle”. If their kid will marry into one, only their grandkid will be considered as a socialite, I’m not sure if their kid will be considered. It’s hard to understand the socialites exclusivity and you will rarely know them because they don’t flaunt themselves.

I think back to the focus on those relationships from the start of that show, and I think downstairs’ matters took up more of the plot immediately. In a way, I can see why the servants’ lives get less attention here, because the show has to spend a lot of time on the fight between old money and new money, as well as address post-Civil War race relations that didn’t really have a counterpart in Edwardian England.

One thing which Fellowes did not mention is the reason why these "Old Money" decided not to mingle with the sorts of Russell's. The fictional Russells are inspired by the real-life Vanderbilts, who at one point were the wealthiest family in the United States. Cornelius Vanderbilt was the patriarch who amassed a large fortune in the shipping and railroad industries in the mid-1800s. He was referred to as a "robber baron," which is a derogatory term for a businessman who uses exploitative practices to build their wealth. Also,these new money resulted in the era being also synonymous with poverty, workers not being paid enough, riots, etc etc, so naturally the Aristrocats would want to distance themselves.

I love this show, and get so excited for Mondays to come. I really appreciate the scenic design and the grand style of the interiors with such beautiful pieces like the crystal chandeliers of a size I’ve never seen before. I also appreciate the costumes and their great attention to detail, the cast is constantly redressing throughout the day and Mrs. Russel has some stunning pieces like her peacock dress which not only was beautiful but set the tone and the spirit of the scene it was worn as the lady was truly being a peacock all feathered up and looking proud, her evening gown and cape in shocking red for the night at the symphony was amazing, the cloak was the star of the show in all of its glory and you know these pieces took hundreds of hours of hand stitching to create, the mens attire is no less elegant and finely tailored every attention to detail is made down to the pocket watches and finger rings, high tall hats that are just not made anymore so I’m sure the costume department is a very busy place . Dressing not only the lead characters but all the many background actors creating a cohesive and stunning look that really submerses the viewer in the style of the day. So far the storyline is exemplary with wonderful writing and deeply flushed out characters rich in back story and easily believed in their roles. The back and forth between the servants and the masters is very charming and so reminiscent of Downton Abby which was a huge success. It is a wonderful depiction of the not well known era of American royalty and the struggles of the classes using fictional and non fictional characters interwoven in a spider web of plot lines. They have done a wonderful job portraying the black community by not focusing on cliche or typical stereotyped characters but wealthy and prominent characters that give justice and honor to the black community showing how they have been right there next to us for so long in this country and though they have their obstacles they are presented in a real life setting respectfully portraying the lines between the races and how they related to each other. Having a strong well bred female black woman as a main character is wonderful and is pivotal to the storyline and has no pandering been given in order to fill a niche. I have high expectations for this cast and crew and wish to fall in love with every character as they slowly blossom into the various shades of good and evil, titillating and full of real emotions, making this era come to life. I will love to see the show go on for many seasons and even branch out into feature films. There is nothing better than a period piece and this period really shaped the country and is truly an American classic. Well done to all

@3:38 *it is quite romantic.* Just wish they’d release all the episodes for the season. The weekly check in is draining. 😩

I LOVE THE SHOW ! It is so crazy to me , that a woman would spend her ENTIRE EXISTENCE planning on how to IMPRESS others so she can be accepted as one of them . Mrs Russell wants to be part of the very same people that wont even turn around to give her a helping hand should she lose everything . I feel so sorry for GLADYS RUSSELL , having a type of mother who justifies HER DESPERATE SOCIAL CLIMBING while destroying her daughters relationships and calling it " MOTHER`S LOVE " . Mrs Russell is no better than the people who force young daughters into ARRANGED MARRIAGES to men they dont even like or love , Bertha comes across as having some traits of a SOCIOPATH and PSYCHOPATH , but i guess it`s all good when you are climbing the latter of Superficial and Appearance .

You do realise that the show is set in 1882 and not 2022?
@aiai-j7i2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have been making the same comment on all these people here thinking the Russell's are "relationship goals" and "cool". Then again, am I surprised when capitalism is basically built on psychopathic traits and to this day these "successful people" are revered in the USA?

I would absolutely agree that all the ladies in this era were probably in some way borderline psychotic..

I love this show so much. I am interested to know if the Russell family entering society with “ new” money are Jewish. They are referred to as “ the tribe “, “their sort “ , “their kind”. For sure Jewish families would not have been welcomed into the “ old money “ society. Unless of course they were the Rothschilds. Behind the scenes of the “ Gilded Age” do not seem to mention the ethnic background of the Russells. Is it possible to be informed of this presumption.
@rachelgrubman46062 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt they are Jewish within the show they have been grouped in with the rockerfellers and the Vanderbilts. They are just new money that’s why people don’t like them

They have Irish background I think.

Berta is definitely Irish (as per the potato farmers joke). If they were Jewish, that would've been a more prominent feature of the show. But it seems that the whole story is centered around old money vs. new money, without going too much into ethnic background (which they could have done, given that the old "aristocracy" on the East coast was predominantly of Dutch origin).

Anyone notice has the Russells dress, dine, and act like European Royalty.. its sorta weird and out of place but I like them..

With the house made to look as French as possible, with mildly hilarious results.

it’s society , never high society, unless your lower class, in the same way it’s a dining room , never a formal dining room.
