Is it appropriate to treat patients with M.S. using hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Yes.
But not because it's a treatment for the disease.
It’s because of the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
When you understand the mechanism of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as well as the pathophysiology, the etiology of the disease or condition, you can determine if it makes sense to apply this therapy for this person.
In the case of M.S., it does make sense.
But we have to be careful because it's a disease of oxidized fat or oxidized myelin.
And because hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have the tendency to increase oxidation, we want to slowly introduce this person to HBOT to make sure the patient appears to be tolerating the therapy well. After a few exposures at mild pressures, we can go up to higher pressures.
We want to stimulate oxidation in a safe way.
If we stimulate oxidation safely, we start increasing the body's ability to handle oxidation. It's that hormetic effect.
And as we do that, we start to stimulate superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and catalase, the chemicals inside our body that protect us from oxidation.
As we expose this patient slowly to hyperbaric oxygen therapy over time, we know that increasing their capacity to tolerate oxidation through HBOT actually helps them handle the oxidation in their exterior environment as well.
Because M.S. is an autoimmune disease, patients typically suffer from lots of inflammation. We know that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps reduce inflammation in the body by reducing inflammatory cytokines, increasing the body's anti-inflammatory cytokines, and it creates balance in the inflammatory response inside the body.
Most patients with autoimmune diseases benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy because of that immune system balancing. Not because it's a treatment for autoimmunity, but because it has an effect in helping to keep the immune system more regulated, which leads to a lower level of inflammation in people who are chronically inflamed, especially those with autoimmunity.
Multiple sclerosis patients usually experience a down regulation of the mitochondria. So the cell signaling and the ATP production inside those damaged nerves starts to become reduced.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases mitochondrial function and all these areas of damaged nerves and brain tissue as we upregulate mitochondrial function, we can upregulate ATP. As we do that, the cells become alive again and they start to do their job and perform their functions at a much higher level.
With multiple sclerosis there’s a breakdown of myelin (an insulating layer, or fatty sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord). So there’s a deterioration in the central nervous system.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy stimulates neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.
When there’s any type of damage to the neurological system of our body, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has the ability to help heal the nerves, build new synapses, build new connections between neurons and help neurons heal along with bringing the central nervous system stem cells into the area for improved healing.
It has this whole neurogenic effect, this healing and recovery of nerve tissue that is possible through repetitive exposures to hyperbaric.
Again, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a direct treatment of multiple sclerosis. But when used safely and appropriately, M.S. patients can experience great results with HBOT.
