Run, jump, break, fix (repeat?) ... Here's the new and upgraded HBX 12815 Protector 1/12 4WD Sand Rail Buggy/Truck. Seems like every time I try to get a few jumps out of my tiny little ramp ... it ends with a broken part. No matter the brand. HBX, WLToys, Traxxas, Tamiya, Kyosho. Always thought that grass would soften up the impact of my bad landings, but I am beginning to think that the uneven lawn in the country side demands more of the car than the running conditions back in the City.
The new yellow/orange HBX 12815 Protector 4WD 1/12 Sand Rail Buggy/Sand Truck was kindly provided by Haiboxing, free for review and tests. Check out the (non-affiliate!) links to the products and prices here on Amazon (links where provided by Haiboxing. I receive NO money/pay/commission):

Compared to the standard version (also featured in this video) the new version includes a new body design, oil filled shocks, metal wheel axles and outdrives and an extra set of batteries. Still under $100 and with the same other features of the standard edition: 4 x LED lights, 2.4G, full time 4x4, double wishbone suspension, metal differentials and full ball bearings.
As far as I know the first edition of the HBX Protector was released in 2018, and the new one in the middle of 2019. At the day of publishing this video, both editions sell on Amazon at just below $100. Remarkable, since the new edition comes with a lot more value for the money.
The HBX Protector is officially specified to a top speed of 38 kph, which I doubt it will do, based on past experiences with this particular chassis, gear ratio and motor size. But time will tell in the upcoming speed test.
In the meantime check out some previous speed tests and other videos with the HBX Dune Thunder and HBX Survivor MT, which just as the Protector, are based on the HBX Survivor chassis. Definitely one of my favorite chassis' from HBX so far, in terms of durability and allround handling.

Adventure Time RC Hi Brent! Yeah, seen the wild bashing videos with yours. I was surprised too. First time I’ve ever broken anything on one of these with this chassis, and I’ve had two previously and we have three now. To be fair I almost break my cars on my little ramp. Think it is the bad landings combined with a bumpy lawn. Would be better with some loose dirt where the car could roll on after a bad landing. Not sure. Did you have the new metal wheel axles and outdrives? My others and my son’s Protector (which he also has used on the little ramp) has the old all-plastic and they haven’t broken yet.

Hi Mikael - those shots into the setting sun were amazing - loved it! Worth getting a breakage for! And good job you had those plastic spare parts, sometimes plastic lasts longer because of the "flex" in the components. Really enjoyed the ride my friend, have a smashing weekend! :)

Mark Bryan RC hi Mark! Yeah, not sure if mounting those thin plastic universal axles ends to metal was the best idea. If it happens again I’ll either go all-plastic or all-metal with them and see. My son’s all-plastic seem to hold up good. Thanks a lot for watching. Looking forward seeing the LEDs in the dusk in just s moment 🙂

Well first of all what an Awesome editing Bashing video again 😱 Loved every minute of it, 👍😍👍 I agree with you on the Plastic and Metal, that is a breakage waiting to happen. On your Sons Dirt Buggy it seems to work well so it was a good idea to see if the old way is better with it being Metal to and I think it does 👍 good that you can try things out. I would change the lot to the Old Way, Anyway yet another fantastic information Vid, Hope you have a great weekend my friend 👍😁👍😍👍

Ooh yeah loved the slo-mo jumps into the sun 😀 Shame about the breakage. What you need is an HPI Firestorm as you can jump them all day without breakage 😉 These do look good for pottering around but maybe not for hard knocks. Good to know that you can get those upgraded parts. Not keen on the wheels being attached with a self tapping screw! Anyway a great vid to show the good and bad points of this car. Here's to the weekend which is starting right now with a lovely beer. Have a good one mate 😀

Pete Wylie RC Videos Ahh, a Firestorm. I’ve heard that they are hard to control for folks like me. Not sure I will be able to hit that tiny ramp with one even if I had one ☺️😂 Yeah, these little ones are great. I’ve had two before (also with small jumps on tarmac) with the same chassis, and now we have three and this is the first break. Looking forward seeing if more breaks will turn up. The ones with the tapping screw has held up fine. I was very unsure about it at first. But the first break was with this one, with the metal upgraded wheel shaft and standard wheel nut and hex. Time will tell. We’re gonna run them a lot this year, the son and me I think. 4WD and this speed is perfect for some father-son fun 🙂 Hope the beer was good, Pete. We had Friday-Candy here instead 😅

Nice looking buggy bro!! Had some sweet jumps there going before the break happened. Honestly plastic to metal is a terrible design always breaks... If you're going to be do jumps and hard bashing go all metal less prone to breakage. But nice repair job. Looks like a lot of Dad and son rcing happening with the HBX's and soon the Tamiya's that's awesome!!! Kindly jealous just got hit with more snow so can't do any till it melts again..The price of running vintage cars with old plastic parts.. :( Well hope you guys have great weekend. I'll be snowblowing, shoveling and putting down ice melt... Then hopefully get some wrenching time on the RC's :)
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chris! Yeah, I really like HBX. Great cars for the price. They’ve come a long way. In the beginning they where just making Tamiya spin-/rip-offs (some say under license, some say not). This chassis of the Protector has been used on more than 20-40 models now, both HBX and rebranded HBX (Redcat, GP Toys...). It’s a very smooth runner and well ballanced. And this was my first breakage. And yes, thinking the same as you, once one starts to mix a few metal parts into a flexible plastic set up, things will start to break. So yes, sometimes, all-metal or all-flexible-plastic are better. Not broken anything on these that only have plastic. And yeah, these are perfect Father-Son budget-runners I think. Complete RTR and 4WD and because of the popularity, spare parts are quite cheap and available. It would have cost us at least twice the money or more to set up two Tamiya trucks in this way, with lights (boys like that) 4WD, radios, big all-round tires, and all that. So I got him one of these, and another one for both of us, to see if he likes it, and if so, if he uses it, we can always get better/more expensive 4WD trucks later. And his cousin got one too, so perfect. Uhh, snow! Well, I know it can cause trouble/work, but sometimes it sets a family-winter-atmosphere better than relentless wind and rain like here 🙂 Hmm, well, at least for me with a little kid. I know yours are a lot older now so maybe snow’s not that magic/interesting/usable for them anymore. So ‘snow’ probably just means ‘shoveling’ for the father. I hope you will get time for some wrenching afterwards 🙂

They put plastic and melat together so it will break so you'll buy the upgraded metal parts.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if that was the intention I think. Most likely they tried to respons to all the reviews that have had a negative respons to the plastic wheel axles and tapping screws. They probably decided to just upgrade the wheel shafts, to keep down costs or keep some flexibility, but if it worked I do not know 🙂
