So, what can I say about today's episode in relation to the novel? 1:09 I introduced Cao Ren back in Episode 19. He's Cao Cao's cousin and one of his top generals. 1:36 The standard romanization seems to be "Xuchang." Back Liu Bei's campaign against Yuan Shu, Cao Cao moved the Emperor there and made it the capital. (I don't know what the Emperor was doing at Xuzhou. Probably just added there so the player knew there was in fact an Emperor in this game.) He retreats there after being released by Guan Yu. 2:03 Chen Jiao is only mentioned a handful of times in the novel, as a subordinate to Cao Ren who's placed in charge of defending the city of...Nanjun, if I'm reading this right. Someone commented on the previous video the Southland disappears from the game's narrative after the Battle of Red Cliffs, but in the novel they continue to be major players, including the upcoming Jingzhou campaign. Chen Jiao is captured after the battle described here, and apparently gets set loose at some point because he's mentioned a couple times after this campaign. One time much later he's identified as the "Minister of War," and one time after that he's one of forty officials who petition the Emperor to do a thing I won't spoil here. 10:18 I'll elaborate more on the "Tally Order" (I'm not 100% sure what that actually _is_ but I found the relevant passages) and what happens with the city Chen Jiao was holding another time. Probably next episode.

According to wikipedia: Fu (Chinese: 符; pinyin: fúⓘ) was a tally, which was used as a proof of authorization in ancient China, which typically consists of two parts.[1] Generals would use the fu as an imperial authorization for troop movements and for other purposes while amongst the populace, it was used as a proof of authorization for goods exchanges or for leases.[1] The official fu was made of bamboo, wood, metal (gold, silver, bronze) or jade.[1][2]: 27-28 Although it could be made in various shapes (such as tiger, dragon, turtle, snake, fish or human), most of them come in the shape of a tiger.[1] Terminology The term fu refers to the magical drawings used by the adepts of Taoist and Buddhist tantric masters.[2]: 28 Shapes of fu See also: List of Chinese symbols, designs, and art motifs Classical description of tallies is found in the Zhou li, which refers to the tallies of jade and horn, and mentions the shapes of tiger, human, dragon, seal, and banner.[3]: 83 [4]

It IS possible to win the upcoming battles without the Tally order, I've done it, but the high castle defence you have to deal with if you don't have it makes those fights a huge pain. They become VERY long because you're only doing something like 100 damage per hit.
