The Sky Hawk was probably my favorite small vehicle. I played with it quite a bit and never had any problems with parts breaking or even falling apart.

This thing is gorgeous. I used it every time I played with my Joes. Easily in my top five vehicles. Thanks for reviewing it!

I had that cool aunt that normally didn't buy gifts but...one Christmas, closer to new years I got this. I already had it but it dawned on me at 10-11 years old, I just army built me an escort for my skystriker. Lol. Those pieces would not stay on I feel in hindsight model glue would've held them on with less frustrating results. Playing with this toy was rough sometimes although I love it still to this day. 😎

I just picked up an unbroken, mint condition one for only 35 dollars. As I suggested month's ago when I last commented, some Blu tack is making the fins and whatnot fit much better to where they're not falling off every minute. And you can't see it, so it looks great.

Crazy. I always considered the Skyhawk one of the sturdier vehicles, mainly because it was so simple. I don't remember being afraid of actually breaking it nor do I remember the fins coming off so easily. Looking at your experience, I can only surmise that I blocked it all out.

I played with the Sky Hawk when I was a kid. I had three of them and I never had such a problem with broken skids and wings falling off. I really think it is due to age. If the toy would not be so old it would hold up better. I did get the 25th and they did improved on it but does not carry the same nostalgia as the 1984 one.

Great review. When I bought the box of over 100 Joes and vehicles at a yard sale for my son, one of the vehicles was the Sky Patrol version. We glued the stablizers on so he could use it and he used either the 90's version of Law or the Cobra Night Viper as it's pilot.

In one of the old episodes they used it as a skiff/skimmer to chase Zartan. The Joes actually stop and get out and the Sky Hawk stays buoyant on the water.

I never understood the "things popping off" dilemma. I'd just glue it into place as long as it wasn't something that was meant to be removed (canopies, engine covers, etc).

Thanks for the review. I fondly remember the creaking plastic sound everytime I forced the vertical stabs into their mating slots. I remember the skids were exactly the same width of something else, maybe the HQ jail? I just can not remember what it was.

I think you have the same problem I have with this toy, big hands. I have such big hands that the wings fall off the sky hawk because it is such a small toy and hard to hold and not knock off the wings. Lol. Great review.

Yes, it is very well armed for the size of it, too well armed. You say that it's got TWO M-61 Vulcan cannons and those cannons underneath the nose? Have you seen the size of a single Vulcan cannon along with its ammo barrel? Just one such gun takes up a large part of a normal fighter, let alone something so small as that tiny vehicle. Also, how does it fly with no wings or rotors? Those engines alone aren't enough to keep it aloft.

i had this as a kid and i hated it. i had the same problems that you did...i was SHOCKED at its shoddy construction...even back then. The design never jived with me as well..it just looks odd. it was a toy i soon forgot about and never played with much. Now as an adult i have rather mix feelings about it. As i look back...the skyhawk showed up alot in the cartoons and its one of the vehicles that feels very iconic to the series. The skyhawk to me is sorta like that bad girlfriend we all dated. at the time..ur happy its over and never want to see that person's face again. over time, not that you would ever date that person again..you can't help but wonder what could have been. i kinda wish hasbro had a second crack at this one back in the day.

It's very fragile. I have mine from my childhood and it's basically in pieces from storage (though the skids are amazingly still in one piece). I tried pulling the engines loose and the clip completely snapped off, cheapo plastic. Agreed that it is a good looking design, but sheesh does it fall/break apart easily.
@HCC788
@HCC788 9 жыл бұрын
Tikifire's Retro Clubhouse It was made to be as cheap as possible. Once you clip the engines in, I don't think they anticipated them being taken out again. It puts a lot of strain on that clip. Not surprised it broke. Mine is close to snapping, so I'm just going to leave it alone.

HoodedCobraCommander788 If you want to eliminate the tape and greatly reduce the risk of breaking the clip when removing it, I have a suggestion that I've used many times with customizing, and it's SUPER SIMPLE. Depending upon your personal comfort with using power tools, you MAY want adult supervision, so ask your wife's permission and have her close by in case you need help. 😉 I know she's a good sport, and you may even want to film your fix, as both a public service and a comedic short. Personally, I know I'd be curious to see how that would go down. 😊 Anyway, as I said, very simple to fix those engines and reduce the risk of clip breakage. You will need: Hairdryer, rubbing alcohol, and either CLEAR nail polish (you may be able to borrow your wife's...IF you ask nicely!), or Future floor polish, depending on your preference. (Personally, I'd just go with the nail polish on this one, so you can brush it on without any mess.) Step 1) Activate hairdryer on High, for about 30-60 seconds, directed at the clip. (This will SLIGHTLY heat and soften the plastic clip just enough to safely remove the engine component without breaking it.) I've suggested the option of an additional 30 seconds, going up to a minute, because of the age of the plastic...just in case. Step 2) After removing engine component, proceed to remove the tape and clean off sticky residue with the rubbing alcohol. Step 3) Using the nail polish applicator brush, carefully and evenly apply the clear polish to the formerly taped area, coating it all the way around. Let the clear coating dry for a couple of hours and apply second coat. repeat this process a couple more times, and let it dry completely for a day or two (to maximize the hardness of the polish so it doesn't peel when clipping back in place). Step 4) Again, using the hairdryer, heat the plastic clip and pop the engines back in place. Everything should be snug and undamaged, without the taped look and still function as it originally did. You can also apply a very light coat of polish to the wing sections, on the points that tab into the slots, so they also fit more snugly and don't fall off as easily. (You're essentially just slightly building up the surface areas on these parts to increase friction and tightness. This technique also works with loose joints on the figures as well.) 😉 This should solve most of the issues and causes of your frustrations with the Sky Hawk. Hope to see an update video, even if you don't end up filming the process for a short. Oh! One additional note that may help you with other pieces on various vehicles and parts... You can use the hairdryer technique to reduce or eliminate stress marks in the plastic, just by heating it to a certain point. This can also be used to straighten (and safely remove) your Tomahawk rotor blades, or anything else that has bent or curved over time. Just be CAREFUL NOT to heat the decals on your vehicles (unless you want to straighten or adjust, but even then not more than 5 seconds...!)
