I really like the D.E.F. designs. They were a bit of realism at a point where the Joe line had largely forsaken that.

Underrated figure and an interesting SLML. Doggie treats and bite marks on the arm guard are great details, and the opportunity to get a re-release of Junkyard was huge, 8 years after the original (and 3 years after v2). As a kid, Mutt was my first DEF figure. I already had v1, but was really excited to get this version too. Edit: Realizing for the first time how similar the DEF figure's colors are to the Slaughter's Marauder's version. Nifty continuity!

- A disinterested cat being, unsuccessfully, encouraged to do something other than sleep or eat? Check. - Masterful sarcasm ('...and that's why we don't have a drug problem today.')? Check. - Cocaine Dog? Check. This was truly one for the ages.

The opening is just as good as the Stargate one ha ha. I never had this figure. The only DEF figure I have are Cutter version 2 and 3 even though it's Battle Corps. This version of Mutt and Junkyard is really cool. The net launcher is great.

Of the 90s figures this one has to be one of the better ones. I do agree with you that the animals should have come in soft plastic stop the legs of breaking. It seems they put in a lot of effort with this figure. The bite marks is a detail I would not have expected from Hasbro at this point in the line. I never liked how every figures came with a missile launcher gimmick. This one is a neat idea and someone clearly spent some time on it. For a 90s figure pretty good.
@ryanjacobson2508
@ryanjacobson2508 Жыл бұрын
Actually the 90's sculpting was often better than the 80's sculpting. They must have gotten better with experience. On the other hand, the character design did get worse and less realistic, but really, it's the ill-advised color schemes that were the biggest flaw. I've heard that due to video games, the market for action figures was skewing younger and younger by the 90's so Hasbro thought that bright colors would appeal more to this demographic.
@DreamMadeProductions

@@ryanjacobson2508 the level of detail did imcrease some in the 90s but man the colors and themes ruined the increase in detail.

pardon my ignorance because i'm sure there are many factors involved in the habit of using drugs or narcotics but as a kid, just one anti-drug ad was enough for me to not even play with the idea of taking one and the same goes with alcohol. it's just weird that people can't still say no. 9:41 tha's a good one xD

I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not call Battle Corps the _"American_ Battle Corps" - that way, you'd have the A.B.C. and the D.E.F., so you'd be teaching kids the alphabet and you could sell the GI Joe range as educational toys! Also, were the Drug Elimination Force trying to eliminate _all_ drugs...? Because not all drugs are bad... I have this image of surprise raids on hospital pharmacies using military-spec hardware, blowing up supplies of insulin and heart medication before walking away and high-fiving. YO JOE!!! I have to say, that schoolkid has some impressive facial hair...

Nice video. Absent a beret, at first I thought you were doing a Curtis Silwa impression. "DEF" seems a little dashed off, there has to be a better acronym somewhere. "DOG" Drug Oppositional Guard or something. That way they could license Iggy Pop to sing "Now I wanna be your dog" I might have lost the plot. I do like your "Mutt is not a pet" which felt very Magritte of you. OK, now I have lost the plot. Keep up the great work. Thanks.

I don't buy this figure as an updated Mutt at all. Unless his face changed shape and he got a nose job. I'm stopping my collection after 1990, mostly. Though there will be a handful of 1991 figures I'll own, but I can't see anything past that. All these later sub teams are garbage. That bad guy in the suit particularly looks horrendous.

Why?
@johnsoehnlen4781
@johnsoehnlen4781 Жыл бұрын
@@christianhafer9819 I have both v1 and v3 in front of me. Both are excellent figures. There are 2 reasons that I think v3 1992 DEF Mutt ever ever so slightly edges out v1 Mutt. 1. Nostalgia. V3 Mutt was the first one I ever owned and this creates a bit of a bias. I'll concede to that tainting my opinion. 2. Head Sculpt. Both are excellent but I really like the subtle detailing on v3. For instance,the sculptor for the v3 head made sure to pay attention to the v1 head and add the scars under the left eye that were vivid on v1 Mutt. The detailing on v3 Mutt is also ever so slightly better defined on the face. The nose is better defined and you can see the nostrils on v3 Mutt. I also like the fact that it's still the same face but aged roughly 8 years. V3 Mutt's head also has better articulation. V1 can only turn left and right. Both figures have exceptional detailing on the rest of the body. A lot of those details are so subtle that one has to actually have them in hand to appreciate. Accessories: V1 Mutt has better ones. Junkyard: Tie for me. I prefer the coloring on the under belly of v1 and the pliableness of v3. As for the Drug Elimination Force: I think that they were the best subteam of the 90s. It made sense for a terrorist organization to get into the narcotics trade and I liked the fact that G.I.JOE was willing to tackle this mature subject. I was also at the age that I could see first hand how drug abuse was negatively affecting some of my classmates and I knew I didn't want anything to do with narcotics. Hasbro really went all out to make sure that the DEF figures were some of the best in the 90s. They didn't go crazy with neon or go cheap with accessories. Every DEF figure was an original mold and it showed effort on Hasbro's part. In execution, the storyline arc left a lot to be desired in the DIC cartoon series. It had more potential in my opinion. The comic run just seemed to want to get the DEF storyline over and done with to focus on Snake Eyes and the Ninja Force. I hope that suffices as an explanation.

@John Soehnlen I guess. I just don't like anything after 1990, so 1992-1994 are the shits, even if there is a couple in '91 that are cool.

@@christianhafer9819 I totally understand. After 1992, it does seem like Hasbro stopped caring. I will agree with you that, with the exception of the Iron Grenadiers, Dreadnocks, and Battle Force 2000, the 80s sublines took the cheap way out by just reissuing old molds in new colors.

@John Soehnlen That's why I'll own all those subteams. I have all of the Iron Grendiere's and Dreadnok's already. Just need 3 more BF2000 then I'll have all the subteams I need. No repaints or duplicate characters.
