Grad 7 Aug 1981. Showed up for training early (Mistake1) So to keep me busy and out of trouble the staff had me design, dig and paint new signs made of paver bricks on the two sides of the old school grounds at Ft. Campbell that faced the roads. Back then we also did the tree landing platform. It was great fun trying to time jumping into a 70' tall or so swaying tree onto a piece of fencing covered in canvas. Then during sling loading I Almost got crushed by a CH-47 while sling loading a Gama Goat (The Chinook dropped alt. and hit the top of the goat. Luckily I jumped off just in time) and the Ruck march/run was 10 miles in 2hrs 20min. Looks like they don't do Australians any more either. Captain Doug Doty was Commandant of the school at the time. And great fun was had by all...

I went to air assault 1 year ago with this very national guard unit in Hawaii. It sucked. Every day it rained and the heat was hell. They will run PT every morning except for the last few days. My 6 and 12 miler was done with an ACH on (different than the video). Just make sure your wearing good boots on your rucks...and study your knowledge books when you rest at night. Do not underestimate the A-22 Cargo Bag "Bag of Death" AIR ASSAULT!

@BackBlocks09 I was actually in this course I'm in the video. Theres a lot I can tell you. But be prepared to have the shit smoked out of you all day on zero day. Don't quit. Hopefully you been keeping yourself in shape. People will fuck up and make everyone suffer but that's no surprise if you went through basic. Biggest piece of advice I will give you though, is for the second phase, STUDY YOUR ASS OFF!!! I'm not kidding. Use every bit of time you have to go through the sequences.

Roster #52. On TDY from the 24th ID out of Fort Stewart, Ga. Attended Fort Campbell and graduated March 1981. Near 70% of the class failed to get their wings. Pussies. Hell, I was no jock, but I wanted those wings so damn bad I did anything to get them. Plus, my CO was a Ranger and he threatened us with bodily harm if we failed him. One of the coolest things we did was go up the 100ft rope ladder into a Chinook. My arms have never been as tired since. Seems like every base has an Air Assault school now. Too bad. Used to be a pretty small club. I never used any of this training until 1984 and I was stationed with the 56 FA (Pershing) in Germany. Our aviation company was small and the brigade wanted to do some air assault demos. Seems that since I was the only Air Assault qualified troop, I was tasked to rig the our Huey and be the repel master. I'm not sure who taught the guys how to repel since none of them had wings, but they seemed to know the commands at least and no one was killed. One more thought. It was the only army school where you paid dearly for swearing. No cursing allowed! Imagine that.

The National Guard offers both ranger and airborne. Seeing as I have been through both, and am in the National Guard.

Why is the California Guard posting videos from Camp Smith, NY Air Assault Class? Maybe they should hire the Warrior Training Center to hold a course there. They can then post their own videos.

Burpees have been around for a long time way before Crossfit. When I was in the military (60s) burpees with push up were common training ass kickers.

@smildonfatalis1 I'm not really sure I didn't know there was a height requirement. How tall are you? Only thing I can say is that being shorter does put you at a disadvantage for certain things (especially the obstacle course), but if you are strong enough for your height you'll do fine.

@VenDeath I would estimate the final ruck to have been about 25-30 pounds. Maybe less. It wasn't really that heavy

@USRECON1 Run often, learn your basic knots, learn to tie a swiss seat, start doing road marches - get comfortable rucking for long distances, 12-15 miles and you'll be ready for end of course ruck march. You'll be instructed on everything you need to know to graduate but you'll be better prepared if you are already familiar.
