People who said that this is not realistic, keep in mind that this was released back in 2010, it is the 1st time we ever saw an (pretty) accurate tsunami on screen, before that all the tsunami sequence in Movies were too huge and inaccurate. Of course The Impossible released in 2012 had more realistic looking wave than this movie.

I was lucky to have been part of the crew that day. Eastwood had this crew build fake building tops out in a cane field so they could "blue screen" the water rescue in the next scene. Underwater scene was shot in a tank in Hollywood. Great CGI.

I've seen Tsunami with my own eyes, water don't just washed inland like that, usually the water will recede very far and for a long time that people will realize there's something wrong, unlike in this video. Also as many has pointed out, the water is too clean. It would lift dirt and sand as soon as it reached land so it'll very murky.

That was pretty decent but the water was WAY to fucking clear man. Some criticized the movie because they thought it moved too slowly. I applauded Mr. Eastwood because, contrary to most modern movies, this movie did not have a fight scene or an explosion every 4.5 seconds (as most seem to nowadays). I was just as awed at the rest of the movie as I was at the tsunami scene.

The tsunami scene in the movie: ‘Hereafter’ (2010) (along with tsunami in the movie: ‘The Impossible’ (2012) has to be the most: chilling, realistic tsunami scene I’ve ever seen in a movie. There is no musical score whatsoever, it’s all complete happenstance, as your with that guy standing up in his condo watching all those innocent people mothers, fathers, children old men and women just get obliterated by the tsunami, as it destroys everything in its path. Just watching this mother and her daughter get swept by the wave as they scream in agony as they get swept through the debris and bushes underwater. You can literally feel almost everything in this scene. ‘Hereafter’ (2010) and ‘The Impossible’ (2012) are the most realistic tsunami scenes i have ever seen in a movie.

That's sadly how realistically the wave moved, to the people who saw it on camera...yeah it looked slow. People who were on the ground like my family, we saw it happen in real time. It's fast, doesnt stop to let you breathe, and will just drop shit on you constantly until you give up. This is one of the most accurate depictions of how it happened. Just wait for The Impossible, which comes out later this year.,,,that one keeps exactly to the story.

When you see the water retreat you need to get to high ground as fast as possible, also when te wave has passed by, don't go back down. A 2nd wave can always strike. (Thats what i learned from watching a docu about tsnunami's)

+MovieDestruction for my course at University of Victoria we had to do a course on mega earthquakes and the Tsunami's that come after it, and yeah depending on the force there can be 2-5 waves or more, the sick bastard even showed us animated simulations that were devised as a way of teaching and explaining it... needless to say i couldn't sleep for three nights.

It is so realistic, because of its water is so dirty, the way the water moves away from the shore, and it is only meters tall. The only unrealistic in it is because its so fast and people are still in the streets instead of taking a selfie of it.

From what i've seen in documentaries, this is not very realistic. I watched the 2004 tsunami documentary and it didn't rush in like a huge wave, the water levels just rapidly rose and flooded the land. Also the water was brown and murky. I thought The Impossible portrayed the tsunami more realistically.
