I was actually on the Golden Gate Bridge when they were filming this scene in 2014! They had a whole fleet of boats going back and forth, doing multiple takes with helicopters flying under the bridge. Yeh, real tsunamis are nasty work because they are deceptively slow. They seem to be easy to outpace till the water starts to nearly puddle at your feet, more like filling a bath tub than a force of nature at first, from then on it´s just seconds before the actual flow hits with no way to get out if you are not really close to a raised area or very solid building, and it just keeps on coming in. Thats one of the things you see a lot in the videos from 2011 Japan. People only walking away from the spreading puddle of water, because they cannot see the rapidly approaching main body of the wave and are deluded into thinking they have time by it.

The fact that monster waves like this are actually plausible and that we see rogue waves completely destroy ships its not a surprise to me that this movie really encapsulated what it means to be at sea when the oceans against you.
@luxaly95102 жыл бұрын
tsunami arent rouge waves tho... a tsunami isnt a wall like in the movie but a rather shallow steady climb to the apex and down again... out in the ocean i wouldnt even notice the tsunami... a waves width depends on the depth.. at 7km depth a tsunami is 943 kmh fast and 282km long... so u would hardly notice that even a 100meter wave... at 10meter depth the wave reduces in speed down to 36kmh and a lenght of 10km... so even a 100m tsunami would be only 0.5729° of a climb... in the movie the tsunami would need to be about 4500 meters +- for that sort of climb needed to get over the wave...
@animehuntress90182 жыл бұрын
@@luxaly9510 I think they were going for it being in the bay, so the water would be "shallower". Reality check though, but this size wave for a tsunami is only possible for a landslide tsunami. Similar to the one in Alaska and what happened with Krakatoa. Up in Oregon/Washington there actually is a seismic area that can and will eventually cause an underwater landslide that will cause a huge tsunami. They've got evacuation zones and clearly marked escape routes... it was really interesting finding out what was what when I was there visiting. Just for clarification cause I just looked it up... this wave would have to be around 800ft to hit the Golden Gate like that.

I was in my 40s. Until the 2004 Tsunami, we didn't know. We all heard stories and saw paintings, but no one alive had ever experienced one to tell us. Well, now we know. Much MUCH worse than anyone realised. The land you are on drops a meter (after the massive 9.6 quake) and the Pacific Ocean shows up at your town 90 feet over your head. The water is the color of mocha coffee, totally opaque, and it is carrying burning islands of debris that knock over everything. Just a really bad situation all around. Get 5 miles inland and 5 floors up a modern building.
@IMCcanTWEESTED2 жыл бұрын
The Vicar at our Episcopal church in Hawaii went out to the beach to warn islanders who ventured out onto the exposed coastal reefs to collect shellfish, urchins, stranded fish, etc. on Hilo in 1946. He barely survived the ordeal jumping into a pontoon skiff in his back yard as the wave took out his home and he rode out the tsunami hanging onto his capsized boat bouncing off buildings and cars. He was astounded how few people understood the warning signs of the approaching tsunami.

3:29 is pretty damn impressive CGI. For a ridiculously giant wave and a tanker tipped onto it's end hitting a bridge, the look and physics is scary real looking
@quillmaurer65632 жыл бұрын
I'd argue it's pretty unrealistic in that it shows a huge container ship standing on end, in reality it would have crumpled like a soda can. They are strong, but the colossal weight of such things would mean they'd crumple under their own weight if the stern hit bottom like that. It's depicted like it's made of the "rigid-bodium" we talked about in engineering school - a hypothetical material that doesn't break or deform regardless of loads. Was probably modeled as a rigid body in CGI rather than something that could deform as it would realistically. Regardless, the CGI is impressive, especially the water - making water hitting and flowing around stuff, and splashing, realistically is very difficult to do convincingly with CGI, and this looks quite good. Lot of computing power went into this!
