There is nothing ordinary about these shuttle launches. It gives me goose bumps every damn time I see these extraordinary and spectacular launches. Man...what feats can a bunch of dedicated humans can achieve. I am also comforted and humbled by the fact that 100s of fellow humans are at continuous work to get those 6-8 folk to space and back.

In my opinion the Space Shuttle together with Saturn V were the most amazing achievements in the 20th century. The Space Shuttle launch is really impressive with that main engines and boosters. Much more impressing that SpaceX launches.
@kremink
@kremink Жыл бұрын
@@CosmosZeroX w h a t? the space shuttle was an expensive piece of killing machine with no real way of a launch abort if something goes wrong (challenger). Whilst i may look cool and all its really expensive and took the lives of 14 people. 7 couldve been saved if it wasnt for poor mission control. SpaceX makes reliable rockets with an affordable pricetag to it. also you cant tell me that a rocket that is able to make a precise landing on a droneship that is barely large enough to even fit a F9 booster isnt impressive
@CosmosZeroX
@CosmosZeroX Жыл бұрын
@@kremink first of all, the space shuttle was of course not a "piece of killing machine iwth no real way of launch..blablbaba. The space shuttle was the best machine (by far) ever built in the 20th century. It was amazing that not more accidents happened. The challenger disaster was 100% human failure because of complete idiots that decided to launch the space shuttle even though the developpers of the Solid rocket boosters were telling that if they launch there is a big risk it could explode. Imagine how stupid that decision was to risk a whole Space Shuttle and all the astronauts just to be in the schedule and not to listen to the developers. It was not the fault of the Space shuttle but because of the managers. The Columbia tragedy was the only really tragic event that could not be prevented. There were a lot of missions without any accident or injury. You say SpaceX makes reliable rockets. So, why exploded Starship? If there were astronauts on Starship they wouldnt have returned. SpaceX was too stupid to build a system in the launch pad that diminish the risks of the giant energy from the launch. So they could have learned something from the Nasa Space Shuttle guys that had the water system but there was nothing like that and the rocket exploded. I wouldnt call that reliable. I have to agree the self landing is impressive but as far as I know this is not the whole rocket, just one part of it. I mean how would that work with astronauts in it?? About the launc aborts, there were a couple of last second Space Shuttle launch aborts. In one case the main engine was already activated. So I dont know why you are saying there was no way of launch abort. Doesnt make any sense....

It's difficult to understand the power of that spacecraft without seeing a launch live. I can understand the millions of pounds of thrust, but to hear that power seem to split the atmosphere apart during launch puts it in a perspective that makes it so much more tangible. I can only imagine what the Apollo launches felt like.

I saw a Space Shuttle launch in 1988. It was STS 26, the important return to flight after the Challenger disaster a few years before. The sounds and brightness of the solid rocket plume is breathtaking. The local people in the area were all glad the shuttle was working again. They rely on the tourists who go to the Cape to watch the launch.
@astroevada
@astroevada 7 ай бұрын
Not so fun fact: The mission afterwards, STS-27 was nearly lost due to a piece of the SRB nosecone impacting the heatshield. It was so bad that the crew thought they were going to die upon reentry, not helping was that mission control didn't see anything due to the poor camera quality. It survived after during inspection it was revelaed an entire tile was broken off and exposed a piece of metal that got melted, That metal was the only thing protecting Atlantis from a firey doom.

On that last Shuttle mission, I kept up on the STS-135 practically every day, from launch to its final resting place in LA. As it piggybacked on that famous 747 one last time, it literally flew right past our street very low on purpose, and flew through Barstow Railyard as well. I will never forget that time. My 3rd grade teacher got me interested in space, and for a long time, wished I could be an astronaut. I still wish I could ride those beasts, but I wouldn't pass the physical for it. However, I am currently working on college work to hopefully one day design another one of these. :)

This. The shuttle wasn't just about "Hey, let's build a space-truck". It was about building something large, tangible, and technologically amazing. People flew to Florida just to watch the launches. It wasn't just a thing used for space, it was an inspiring monument to our capabilities and our willingness to go beyond, in an age where anyone can put some guys in a tin can that crash lands on re-entry, it was a real-world step into the world of science fiction, in a way that captured the imagination of an entire generation, and inspired countless others to enter the aerospace industry.

@@superskiier50 They didn't "crash" Challenger disintegrated when launching in 1986, due to an O-ring failure in the SRB. That launch should never ever have happened. Engineers warned about the design limitations, nasa ignored them. That was a failure of management not design. Columbia disintegrated on reentry in 2003, because of a foam strike that occurred during launch. Again NASA had been aware of foam-shedding for years, but instead of making simple repairs to remove insecure pieces of foam from the ET design, they waited until after it ended in tragedy. The Shuttles still flew 133 times successfully, travelling 100s of millions of miles. Pretty amazing for a craft designed in the 70s and built in the 80s. It didnt achieve some of its early and unrealistic objectives, but it did so much else. It was a brilliant era and anyone who says otherwise just takes technological advances over 3 decades for granted. The Shuttles themselves were iconic and magnificent craft. I miss watching them fly. It was their time to say goodbye though and its stunning to now see them in museums.

@georgearthur205
@georgearthur205 3 жыл бұрын
@@bencarter8324 Apollo had a worse safety record than the Shuttle. There was Apollo 1 which ended in tragedy and Apollo 13 which very nearly did. The Shuttle obviously had 2 disasters, however they were very avoidable. Challenger was more a failure of management (ignoring engineers) rather than a fundamentally dangerous design. The Shuttle program went on for far longer and had far more missions than Apollo. The death toll in the Shuttles is higher but of course, the Shuttle capacity was 7 astronauts (Challenger took 8 once!) Most other programs only took 2/3 at a time. 133 successful missions out of 135 is quite good, for a craft designed in the 70s and built in the 80s. That's a safety record of 98.5%. Space travel will get safer in time, but 20-30 years ago? We still had so much to learn. There'll always be risks. Apollo had 12 manned missions, 1 ended in tragedy. So that's a success rate of 91%. Still good for a 1960s spacecraft to be honest. Both the Shuttle and Apollo were amazing in their own way, and both achieved great things. But in terms of basic safety records (vs how many missions they actually had) Shuttle was safer.

Nothing quite like watching a Shuttle launch (the landings were incredible too). Shame it got so expensive and we cant see these magnificent craft fly anymore. They achieved an awful lot and laid a foundation for a bright new era. An incredible, complex space station and a working space telescope that allows us to look into the far reaches of our universe, and countless other things over 30 years. Now we can look at these great craft in their museums, whilst watching new programs take us further and further. ❤

$5,000,000,000 ($5bn) per launch was quite a steep price to pay especially in lite of the poor safety record. A third shuttle blowing up would have been devastating to the U.S. image, it was better to terminate it and move on to something that can get us outside the low earth orbit. (i.e. Mars) A Space Shuttle launch does look awesome though.
