That's absolutely amazing quality for a machine made in 1985 - especially considering it's probably slightly sharper quality than the 2003 machine. Would it be possible to see more comparisons between Betamax and VHS, please? :)

Despite the significant theorethical superiority of S-VHS (400 vs 290 lines) I actually found SuperBeta and S-VHS to be very similar in quality; if I had to choose one I would probably even say SuperBeta had the slight advantage. It might be just down to the different gear used for recording/playback/transfer though.

Beta has better color than SVHS, but the resolution is slightly better in SVHS, I wonder how would it look on a standard VHS.

Very comparable to beta. Reason being the VHS VCR is a lot newer. If you'd compare beta vs VHS periodically equivalent, beta would come out top.

Tech Connections did a standard VHS versus standard Betamax comparison. They are basically identical .

SVHS has a horizontal resolution of 400TV lines, Betamax is only 250TV lines. Now in this video, SVHS and Beta don't look much different honestly

Do the comparison without the HD…. just SVHS versus SuperBeta. Trying to squeeze 3 images on screen reduces the quality & differences hard to see .

This is the actual sound from the VCRs. Listen closely while they are switching, I could not sync them perfectly.

I didn't realise you switched sound sources too. Had to re-watch the whole video to compare, lol! I think that you didn't normalize the volume of the sound, the HDMI is louder and human mind thinks it's better. If the volume was identical on all of them, I doubt I would be able to tell the difference.

No, they looked that GOOD! Watch them on a good CRT TV like a PVM, which has much truer blacks and more vivid colors than an LCD, and you'll see them on the screens they were designed for.
