I followed her career back then and I have always loved her style. She was such a strong contender back then, but either the stress of the competition or some bad luck prevented her from winning many competitions. She's amazing and in my opinion brought a lot to skating. She was one of my favourites at the time. Still enjoying watching her tremendously ! Aaah... souvenirs souvenirs... This program was so exciting to watch and I absolutely loved her choice of music, shame she missed couple of times because otherwise this would have been perfect but you could see the fall affected her some in the end. This specially where lot more fun to watch than Nancy Kerrigan even if she didn't seem to make any mistakes really.

Considering Backflips are illegal she was lucky when she was allowed back again. But that wasnt enough for her and her mom...they wanted it to COUNT for her. And for it to excuse her weakness...lack of flow and grace. You can't hand mold a sport to your needs. Ladies Figure Skating is one of the MOST Traditional and conservative nd most dedicated to elegance and grace. Jumps are only a small part of it. Why did she go from doing well in the physical sport of Gymnastics that she is so suited to trying to change the Most Beloved Sport of Ladies Figure Skating? She embarrassed them and herself so many times. She also stole precious Glory Moments from true winners and their families that could never be retrieved. She made their MOMENT TO SHINE all about herself.

@pianette94 Yes, I agree. And to be honest, she does the "Acrobatics" because she is very weak when it comes to graceful moves and competing in the style the Olympics are very firm about it. I believe it was Peggy who said (after one of Surya's tempertantrums because she felt she earned Gold) "Surya needs to understand thT Figure Skating, especially ladies figure skating is about more than jumps and acrobatics...the rules are the rules, you can't expect to get a high score for breaking rules that you broke to make up for the fact that you are weak in the graceful art of figire skating... You can't break the rules by doing moves you can do due to your strong atheleticism. Surya was in the kind of skating that men do so well in, ans she did well...but then shee decided to try to change the rules to suit her personal needs. Wrong!

@pianette94 Yes, As I understand her adoptive mother seemed to have put Racism into her head. Sorry, she could not do the Ballet-like graceful movements and she fell too much. She started out doing a sort of acrobatic skate routine and she should have stayed with it...She tried to make up for what she lacked by doing illegal jumps...thats never gping to work in Figureskating! She lost me whe she threw her bquest for winning Bronze when she wanted to win Gold...and when she refused to stand in a lower position that a lovely Chineese gal who outskated her by a mile. The official had to life her up on one side to get her to take the poosition she earned...not the one she demanded.

I give her credit in terms of going for broke with all those fancy and difficult moves. She was in third place going into the final event, and Baiul and Kerrigan, who finished ahead of her, had already completed their performances. She knew that to catch Baiul would involve pulling off these very difficult moves, and she seemed to rather go for the gold or nothing at all.

The first two jumps made my tummy do something weird. In a good way. Anyhow, I'm new to ice skating (coming from roller rink and inline skating). Surya's style is great to watch because it's simple and powerful. People can say what they will, but she was in the olympics so I'll take my time and watch it, respect it, along with all the others!

Japan had MUSE technology which used Laserdisc tech to have High Definition Home Video, but that took an incredibly expensive setup. Only the richest people could afford to have programs in HD on Satellite.

I don't think Surya Bonaly was as bad of an artist as everyone made her out to be. The use of the music here is actually halfway decent. Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" has a bit of a creepy, menacing tone to it at times and she played it off really well. Sure, she's a little jerky in her movements but this program is far more intriguing than what more than half of the women put out 25 years later.

It was far more intriguing and fascinating than the entire field in 1994. Oksana Baiul was charismatic, but not a convincing show girl. Nancy Kerrigan was devoid of feeling. Chen Lu was very conventional. Surya was impassioned...almost hysterical, but in a good way.

I thought she skated really well to this music, but it did tend to look a little discombobulated when she didn’t skate as well. Her performance to this at ‘93 Worlds was absolutely outstanding. She may not have been classically graceful but who cares? She certainly moved with the music, understood the pacing of it and she felt it. She interpreted it, even if it hers wasn’t an interpretation designed to suit very conservative tastes. I thought it was a really good program and she had definitely grown as a skater by this point. But this particular performance doesn’t show that as much because she was making so many mistakes in the technical side and started to panic by adding in jumps she didn’t have planned. Such a shame. She was in great position for a medal.

I think Surya (like Slutskaya) wasn't very artistic in the conventional sense, but they both had tremendous charisma and presence on the ice. You have to remember though that traditionally feminine 'artistic impression' was still hugely important at this time...hence the judges love for the likes of Baiul, Bobek etc.

She was underrated as a Skater trust Me.They Never saw her to be Good enough.They banned her Back flips and her splits on Ice through her Performance.Trust me.I like Ice Skating, but they can Be true Bias Ass Witches.The Judges didn't think She was Pretty Enough.They knew she was very Talented but they didn't want to Crown this Young Lady for the Gold.They say that she wasn't Artistic Enough.Even when she made All of her Jumps.And if she would ever miss one of her Jumps in her Programs.She would throw them into the Program Later.I watched how they played this Good Talented skatwr for Years.They were very Bias Against Her.And Especially the American and Sometimes Japan Judges.She Ended UP ! These really weren't bad marks. She deserved the 5.7 and 5.8s even with the two major mistakes in the technical merit marks and of course they were reflected in the artistic scores. Surya was definitely one of the best in the 90s. If she had skated this program clean she would have had 5.9 in technical merit and 5.8 in artistry and would have beaten Baiul like at the previous two European Championships. It looks as though the judges may have given it to her.

It’s hard to know for sure but those marks were really promising considering she missed two lutzes and underrotated her second triple toe. That’s partly because even with her mistakes, she landed as many clean triples as Kerrigan and Baiul: 5. She’d planned 7. She panicked after missing the first lutz which I think is why she tried for a flip-toe combination, which I don’t remember seeing her do before. That wasn’t necessary. She would have done better leaving that beautiful flip solo, and doing a triple toe solo at the end. Would have given her 6 clean triples. It’s hard to know what they would have done with the artistic Mark just because the impact of the program is totally different depending on how she skates it. A clean performance should have won it outright, but she skated this same program flawlessly at Worlds in ‘93 and still ended up second to Baiul. I just have a hard time thinking they would have given her the marks to beat them both in the same night.

They still put Baiul ahead mostly on the basis of her artistry. And that was even though Surya was the European champion three times over at that point and had beaten Baiul to win her latest title.

I am just saying if she had a great skate her she probably had a better shot to beat Baiul here than there, as Baiul's skate was actually weaker here with the two footed landings. And while people talk up how great Kerrigan's skate was, and she probably was robbed of the gold, she did only 5 triples, her triple-triple was the easiest in the book which Surya had harder ones planned, and no triple flip (the jump she doubled).

Oksana B., I loved her performance and was thrilled she won the gold. I’m American, I was confused how any of my friends and associates could think Nancy was the clear winner. Now; in 2023, watching both performances again, twice. Both ladies delivered exceptional performances and Nancy’s performance is more eloquent than I remember. I still feel OB was the gold winner. She was superior in technique and body movements as eloquent as a seasoned Prima Ballerina. Such a gorgeous skater.

Free skate: 1. Kerrigan, 2. Chen, 3. Sato, 4. Szewczenko. But Surya really should have been the defending 1993 World Figure Skating Champion at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer. But Surya kept changing this program around after '93 World's, and it got worse. Why change it? Surya's best ever performance and interpretation of this Vivaldi program was at the 1993 World's.

My guess is it has to do with her attempt to be first woman to land 2 Triple Triple Combos in a long program with the Triple Flip Triple Toe & Triple Toe Half Loop Triple Salchow. She landed 6 Triples (5 Clean)- Loop, 2x Salchows, 2x Toe & Flip. So my guess is her base mark was at 6.0 considering no other women in the competition had the technical difficulty like Surya had. 5.8 is reasonable.

purposely getting into Midori's way and showing bad sportsmanship by doing so ended up coming back to Surya by her botching the 92 and 94 Olympics. Cheated combination jumps and no flow. Goodbye medals. I used to adore Surya but hearing about her attitude was an eye opener. Her best Olympic moment was 98 when she did her backflip.
