Like so many of the NES great ones, Metroid was way ahead of its time. No matter how many times I play/watch this game, I can't get over how amazing the Kraid stage music is. Excellent TAS run.

The restarting helps shave time from backtracking to checkpoints if the distance is too far.

I just noticed if you tie the spacebar to the play/pause function of the video and hammer it around 14:37, the Zoomer crawling on the platform initially shows up as the energy drop it contains.

What constitutes as cheating for a speedrun is totally subjective. Some would call every TAS cheating. I don't consider anything cheating unless you modify the ROM or write to the memory using some external program / device. Some might consider that too to be interesting enough to allow. It's just your opinion, man.

some of the earliest speedruns were all tool assisted since they were segmented and could easily be redone until optimal time

I had this game when I was 7 years old. I found the morph ball upgrade, an energy pack, and a missile pack. That's it! I tried to bust open the metal door, but it didn't budge after 3 missiles were fired at it, so I figured there had to be another way. I haven't touched the series since. Boy, did I miss out lol

I'm not sure I understand the constant restarting after picking up certain items, especially Energy Tanks.

Did you get ice beam a second time at 24:03? And did it downgrade you from wave beam?
@TheOneTrueMaNicXs
@TheOneTrueMaNicXs 8 жыл бұрын
+Tecreatoromega The wave beam and the ice beam are incompatible according to game manual if i remember correctly. You can only have 1 and it switch when you pick up the other.

@shimo_retro_gameplays6288

Samus before turning to the other side shows up very quickly in the starting pose, so he picked up the item and before the item music plays he quickly faced the other side (of course slowing down the emulator) that's how he did

TASVideos says that it's cheating to start a run from a savestate with a few exceptions, such as a newgame+, the need to unlock another mode, etc. Most people in the speedrun community do not agree with your definition of cheating; Speed Demos Archive, the first result in a Google Search for "speed runs", says "Players are expected to use every method at their disposal, including glitches, to minimize time." If there's enough of an audience for it, glitchless runs are made available, too.

That's not allowed because it's incredibly trivial to speedrun a game when you're allowed to use savestates. Every single game's "record" would be 0:00 because people would just start the run from the credits. The purpose of TAS is to show the fastest way to complete a game from power-on with nothing more than button input / resets. That's what the audience has wanted for many years now.

Everything in TAS'es are humanly possible, using actual hacking cheat codes is not possible in regular gameplay unless you activate the codes. In TAS runs, no cheat codes are activated, it is as if we are watching a guy play with the most godlike reflexes and absolute knowledge of the game.

It's for entertainment. Everyone loves to play the whole game for fun. And then they decide "hey, i wonder if i can beat this game quicker" and they try. and then they say "I wonder if i can skip this?" and they go from there. The whole point of speed running is both for competition and having fun with a game. Also Glitches =/= Cheating. Glitches is using the games set of rules against it while cheating is breaking the games rules entirely. like cartridge tilting. or hacks.

Your perspective of cheating is kind of idiotic. I don't think there isn't currently any TAS videos that uses save files and the reason to why, is exactly as @BrandMan211 said: "Every single game's "record" would be 0:00". If TAS videos would use save files, there wouldn't be any great TAS videos :/

Glitch = abusing the game's bad programmation It's not cheating at all The game was made with bugs, the speedrunner just use it, even in Non-TAS people use them.

Stopped watching as soon as the door glitch was performed. Does nobody do glitchless speedruns anymore? I really don't like glitched speedruns. It's like pulling the curtain back to show backstage during a play. Just...why?

also using saves is bogus its a run lets beat the record for the 100m dash at 50m lets stop the clock give the runners a rest then start again flip the record would be 5 sec. the english language has word definitions for a reason here jfbfdgkjhds kdjfvkjd kfuhkajhv dkjvakfh do u understand word meanings if we didnt have them there would be chaos again speed runs :start to finish no missed bit as fast as u can no breaks or pauses! speed jumps:start to finish as fast as u can no holds barred

dudes dudes dudes speed runs are only speed runs if the game is 100% clocked from start to finish every element of the game should be completed this means glitches ARE cheating on speed runs its not about any way possible skipping 90% of game play its hitting all gameplay as fast as is possible utilising ur brain in conjunction with you fingers, all games have ways for programmers to skip through with a code here or there again NOT speed runs.
@bredoffender
@bredoffender 4 жыл бұрын
They aren't. Glitchless speedruns are an own category. But in certain Other speedrun categorys glitches are allowed and Not Seen as cheating, but as Tricks for being faster.
