Fantastic! The very quiet operation of these magnificent Shays coupled with the mournful sound of the whistles makes them almost ghostly. What a superb show they put on for everybody. Greetings from the UK, Bob K.

Steamy!!! Bullet, electric, diesel trains are not worth talking. But these lively steam locos with the greenery adding more beauty, makes me feel it's a gift for those who are living around that region.

I've been up there a couple of times and it's worth every penny. YFI that fire tower at Whittaker used to be on top of Gauley Mountain iin Fayette County. It was 100 years old last year. The best job I ever had was manning that tower.

In case anyone was confused as to why these locomotives are so slow, the Shay locomotive was built specifically to hand carrying large and heavy loads up steep inclines that other locomotives would have had trouble with otherwise. Instead of having the pistons connected directly to the wheels, the pistons drive crankshafts that give the engines insane amounts of power, but very little speed. The focus on power is also why the Shay appears to not be very "fuel efficient" if you want to call it that.

And run at partial slip, something you really couldn't do with a direct drive steam locomotive. Once they start slipping it's game over, they'll rev themselves right to the moon if you don't immediately chop the regulator back, but Shays would happily chuff away at partial slip all day long. Helped with their pulling power.

Awesome video and almost brought tears to my eyes. Thank you very much indeed for this wonderful video of yours! If I may share a personal experience of mine. You know, I find it kind of funny while I always drew the “classic” steam locomotives growing up and dreamed of being at the throttle of a larger road engine like a Northern or a Hudson, I practically grew up with the Shays. Here in Ottawa Ontario Canada, the Canadian Science & Technology Museum has a two truck Shay, and out over in Kelowna British Columbia, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway also operates a two truck Shay. I have grown up with these engines and I love every bit of them, from their “old western style” look to their offset boilers. While I always seem to swerve back to the “classic” engines, the Shays will always have a special place in my heart. Again, thank you for this amazing video and keep up the great and awesome work.

dalton ward They are built for logging up in the mountains, so all those bits on the side are pistons which are driving crankshafts that are attached to the wheels, this gives the locomotives insane strength for a locomotive their size at the cost of speed, and the system also allows them to climb a steeper grade than a traditional steam locomotive.

Due to the vagaries of the KZbin algorithm, I've never seen this clip before. While they were a truly awesome collection of steam engines, with the most awesome sounds - better even than #4014, in my opinion - I was surprised that so few people pointed out the locomotive on the far right, was not a three truck Shay and how many had never seen a geared loco. All the other four were Shays, of slightly different models I think, but that first loco was a three truck Heisler. Which in and of itself, must be as rare as rocking horse pooh. I never knew Heisler ever produced such a thing, but given Shays often had the third powered truck, Heislers would've had to compete? The third type of geared loco from about the same era, was the Climax, which had cylinders mounted almost conventionally, driving a crankshaft under the boiler. This drove bevel gears on a centre line drive shaft to the two trucks. Although I have seen a Shay in my time, they never existed here in the UK. There are small, articulated narrow gauge locos, but they are of the 0-4-0+0-4-0 Garret or Fairly types, or even a few Mallett types, not geared drive locos. Oddly enough, a Shay would be one of the few types of American locomotive that could run on standard gauge track in the UK, because of our very restricted loading gauge. Our largest and most powerful locomotives are just over 13' high and 8' wide!

It would be fun to com pare a Climax to the Shays also. The one we had at Snoqualmie would do 25 mph wide open but they were also known to shake themselves apart. We had to check for loose nuts and bolts daily.

This is like the land that time forgot! Back when people traveled by rail before the automobile . 21 century every one wants a new car to impress their neighbors! In those days you talked on train to each other. Now everyone can't wait to be in a traffic jam to play on the internet. People say we have come so far in the 21 century! Really, with more problems as a society? Don't take Americans electricity, running water, heating or refrigeration away, they can't survive.🤔

@beltfed4624
@beltfed4624 7 жыл бұрын
TilemanSD - The locos with the offset boiler are called Shays, designed by Ephraim Shay about 100 years ago. The one ahead with the center-line drive is called a Heisler, and they were just about the fastest geared steam locomotives of the time. There is a third big league player at Cass but it hasn't been fully restored yet, it's called a Climax, and it resembles the Heisler a little but was known for being stubborn. Have a great day! Oh yeah, the Shays were geared like that to operate a lot like a 4x4 truck except they had rails to run on, it gave them extreme traction and flexibility on steep, curved, or poorly built track. They were kind of like a mix between truck and locomotive in a way.
