People talk a lot about the line, "There are no heroes left in Man." but I feel the beginning is much more powerful. "Tell me now! Is there a Man among you here, Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight?" "Tell me, Man! Is there not one in all your ranks? Is there no one who values Courage, over life?" Protoman is begging for any of the crowd to stand up for themselves. I see it as the implication that if even one person put themselves forward, he'd turn around and fight Wily's forces tooth and nail(or bolt and screw, as it were)

Whenever I here the line "Is there no one who values Courage, over life?", I think of Tank Man, the Chinese protestor who stood in front of a tank in an attempt to stop it in its tracks. "They'' watch you die to save their lives. They will not sand here by your side." This is the line that crushes me every time. I've seen them preform live so many times and not once have they done The Stand, I imagine it's because it would immediately crush the mood of the room.

@@pseudogenesis I always interpreted it as his Breakman mask. I figured he was wearing it during Vengeance and took it off when he said "What vengeance means" to talk to Megaman, and then he puts it back on at the end of this song because hes no longer the man who wore that face. Then he wears it all throughout Sons of Fate until it falls off when he dies, at which point Megaman slowly puts it on as he comes to his realization. However, I think your interpretation is equally valid.
@DrTofu83
@DrTofu83 3 жыл бұрын
@@baval5 Both interpretations are correct. It can also be that Protoman dons the Breakman mask when he feels less the robot he used to be and more Wily's pawn. When he tells his story to his younger brother and cautions him against humanity, he's Protoman taking pity on Megaman and feeling he's going to be broken by loneliness and despair as he was, when he's done and Megaman is still willing to fight, he dons back the Breakman disguise, as Protoman is no more there, and Megaman is no more his brother but an enemy. When Megaman kills him, Breakman returns Protoman for a final time, and Megaman returns to be his grieving brother. So Megaman becomes the "new" Breakman, but instead of breaking others he lets his own heart shattered beyond repair until he can't feel anything anymore

This song really hits me at heart. I don't know what it is, but that robotic cry from Protoman as he screams to humanity in a hope of convincing them one last time really just bring a tear to my eyes. This man sacrificed everything he had in hopes to have their help, but now here he is, a resurrected, hollow remake of what he once was, screaming and pleading the truth to them and his younger brother. I think Protoman knew he was about to fall one last time, but if he could use his voice once...

Lyrics You're trying to understand. I told you your brother had been killed. Yet, here he stands in the very shadow of the man you came here to destroy. You came here to avenge his death. You came here to save mankind. You see now, you cannot do both. Tell me now. Is there a man among you here? Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight? Tell me Man, is there not one in all your ranks? Is there not one who values courage over life? They looked to me once. Now they turn to you. Do you understand now? Do you see that the truth is they don't want to change this? They don't want a hero. They just want a martyr, a statue to raise. I've given everything I can. There are no heroes left in man. So it begins! No matter which one of us lives, the ground we're standing on will crack and blow away. And you will fight. But when you fight, you'll fight alone. And in the end you'll see there was no other way. I've been here before. I've stood where you stand. They called me their hero, The Hero of Man. But why should we save them When they stand for nothing? If they deserve life, LET THEM STAND FOR THEMSELVES. We've given everything we can. There are no heroes left in man. They'll watch you die to save their lives. They will not stand here by your side. (Instrumentals) We've given everything we can. There are no heroes left in man! So let them watch as we decide, the very fate of all mankind!

And those of us that do try, we just see our dreams crash in front of us, watch as our fellow citizens we fight for just look the other way as a billy club comes down on us. Etc.

One thing I love about this song is how the distortion varies in Protoman's voice. The distortion tends to be an indicator of how evil the speaker's intentions are (of maybe how disillusioned they are. It's debatable). And for the most part, Protoman's voice has some level of distortion. But it's highest when he's badmouthing man, saying they're all cowards. And it's almost entirely gone we asks "is there not one among you who will try to fight?". In that moment, he's not a soldier of Wily, or a man bitter at being abandoned by those he tried to save. He's just a man genuinely hoping someone will stand up, pleading with the crowd to follow the example he and his brother have set. It really adds to the message of this song. Protoman's goal wasn't vengeance. At least not completely. He wanted to force mankind to stand up for themselves. I don't think what he's done is *right*, but it's understandable.

***** Rock music is characterized specifically by being relatively fast and punchy with electric guitars. Metal is to rock as the rapier is to the sword, or as crack is to cocaine. It is the refined, concentrated, most powerful version of the genre. When I listen back to back between Iron Maiden, and say, Rush, while one is rock and one is metal, it's the same itch getting scratched. The same can't be said for any of the other equivalents you drew, and if you were to find and equivalent where it did indeed scratch the same itch, I would feel the same applies.

I have a particularly strong memory of this song. I live in Massachusetts, not terribly far from Boston. I was on high repeatedly listening to The Protomen in mid-April of 2013. On the morning of the 15th, I had just gotten off the train coming home from work and I noticed there was a huge crowd on the Train Platform - something very unusual for my small town. While I squeezing through the crowd, I was listening to this song - in particular the speech by Protoman about if there was anyone who valued courage over life would stand up. I silently sung along thinking that this band was right. There are no Heroes left in Man. That morning was mere hours away from the Boston Marathon Bombing. That crowd waiting for the train was going to Boston for the Marathon. I wonder if there was meaning in that moment.

mankind, those living in this city, they had every reason to stay downtrodden. the diabolical schemes of Wily kept them in a malaise, and eliminated anyone who might rise up against him. and yet, a hero still arose. from this oppressive bog of a city, a hero arose. his name was Joe. he lost, yes, but not for lack of heroism or will, but because Wily was one step ahead. and yet, you, Protoman, the man who was designed to be a hero, the one who had every advantage Light could give you, the one who not only failed, but became the very thing you swore to destroy, you DARE to lecture Humanity about their failure to produce heroes. you have no moral high ground here. you were never really a hero. a hero is one who fights even when he knows he is the only one left standing.

No but he's right though. What exactly have the people done? Were they with Protoman when he went to fight Wily and his minions? How did the masses assist their creation? Did they take up arms against Wily's machine regime? No, they did absolutely nothing. They put all their bets on Protoman, expecting him to do all the work and solve everything on his own. He failed, so they decided to try again with Mega Man, ditching one machine for another. They sent Mega Man to finish the job, again not doing anything else of their own initiative. No organized resistance, no assisting Mega Man, just let him do the work and reap all the benefits. The masses had their chance, and Protoman concluded that the people refused to help themselves, thus were no longer worth his time. By Act I's end, Mega Man came to a similar conclusion when he saw them chanting for Protoman's death, begging for his help when the robots showed up. He let them die because they were too apathetic to defend themselves. Protoman is not a hero, he was just a tool of the masses, a people too lazy to work together, too undeserving of a martyr of any kind. Protoman was right, and to claim he was "never really a hero" is merely shifting blame while feigning innocence. The masses were guilty of apathy, putting their problems onto one character they never understood or tried to understand, a character they saw as a weapon they could use without needing to struggle.

@@mailmanwilly and what could they have done? its really easy to sit on your high horse and say they should have done "something" but what the fuck could they have done? explain to me exactly what they were supposed to do, and then explain to me a bunch of oppressed downtrodden people living day by day were supposed figure out and organize an effective rebellion in a city where a seemingly invincible regime of robot masters ruthlessly crush anyone who steps out of line? they needed a hero not because of apathy but because of lack of ability. even Joe struggled against a single assassin with a knife. to call that apathy is akin to telling the starving masses to eat cake.

@@mailmanwilly but despite everything i have said, despite all the countless issues that contribute to their continued oppression, this will end eventually. there will be more heroes, better heroes. human heroes. humanity always finds a way, eventually. no regime, no matter how invincible, lasts forever. there will always be heroes left in man.

@@VeryPeeved I do agree that they had no chance on their own. But when protoman was speaking to them they should have stood up and say they are ready to put everything they have into stopping wily. If even one person had stood up and fought, protoman would have turned his back on wily. Them doing nothing but cowering behind megaman was them throwing away their last chance. As now they have no choice but to fight, and now they fight alone.

My guess is Wily took what he could of him (even if pieces) and tried to replicate him the best he could. Possibly his robots were able to "scan" him before killing him off so he could do what he could to rebuild him. From there, it was just a matter of simply getting a point across Proto's mind that he was fighting for the wrong side.

@King_Clark

@TheKayasumaRaider Unless Protoman IS Joe. Think about it. Waiting over a decade to try and save mankind? Dying senslessly to change the world? Failing to start a resistance? Your father only recognizing that you're a son to him only after you've been killed? Being rebuilt to serve the very man you hate? These are all things that apply to both characters. For all we know, "Protoman" could be nothing more than Joe's tale told by the citizens as a method of keeping each other from doing anything.
