HD upscaled titles & restored stereo music | BBC News | 1997

I went back to basics for this one. I re-digitised the 720x576 titles in 25i from my DV tape, then used Topaz AI to upscale it into 1920x1080 in 50p. Most of it looks good. The presenters look a bit plastic and wide shots don't work very well.
Then I synced the title themes and music beds with stereo files generously given to me by ‪@hoanganhkheo-editor‬

For 1993 when they created this new computer generated news studio, it was really very good. Always remember, people watching in 1993 - 1999 were watching this in analogue television sets, and so watching it on that system would have made this look out of this world and high tech.

It was absolutely astounding in '93. People were genuinely baffled about how it was done. It was a massive leap forward. Together with the news themes, it was one of those quite rare occasions where everything came together beautifully, as only the BBC can do.

Ahh lovely! Over 12 years ago there used to be a whole video of clean music-beds and lead-ins of the news themes but it disappeared, so great to see and hear this! Loved the presentation and music of this era of BBC News, really impactful and elegant. Thanks!

@@vhs_videohomesystem The themes are so catchy aren't they! The virtual studio still looks amazing as a whole (thuogh the lighting rig looks pretty sparse and fake now) , the CG cut-glass coat of arms still looks crisp and attractive, really looks like glass. Great upscale as well, really brings out the details. News sets all look a bit samey these days, this really stands out. Lambie Nairn did an amazing job of updating the BBC's corporate look in the 90s, from the cold elegance of this, to the eccentric quirkiness of the BBC2 idents. And it all comes together.

A chance discovery, and probably the fastest I've ever hit like and subscribe hearing the absolute * clarity * of the headline bed of the Nine theme at the start of this video. Absolutely stunning - thanks for these incredible restorations! Still an incredible piece of music, with a stirring hurriedness and immediacy and the information cutting through the noise. Glorious. And yes, echoing the comments of these stunning higher quality views into what must have been out of this world some 30 years ago. The massive crystal glass coat of arms still impresses me to this day and mirrors an impressive and stoic authority BBC had on TV way back when (probably less so with Breakfast News in this video but that's just me, haha). Someone else mentioned it but the camera pull back just as the British Isles spins into view on the glass globe of the Nine is just * chefs kiss * The nice touch - the CGI 'lights' in the studio rig also lighting up at the same time as the real ones on the presenters. Very nice.

Looks amazing. The 9 o'clock news set was especially impressive; I like the way that the coat of arms is shown facing the camera (rather than at an angle in the other bulletins), but the way the desk is distorted and then peters out behind the coat of arms is weird. It would have been better if the desk had not been extended that much, so that all that could be seen behind the coat of arms was the dark blue studio wall.

Just shows how majestic BBC News theme tunes used to be, before it was all poured into a food blender and dished out in 1999 as the new BBC News corporate theme which we have had in one form or another since then.

The 9 o clock theme is amazing. It's a pure eargasm. It's the ultimate evolution of the 1988 theme. That little extended note at 3:10 into 3:11 just makes all the difference. There will never be anything like it again. Ostentatious, confident, dominant. The way the camera pans out quickly when the United Kingdom is exactly at the centre of the frame. They just wouldn't allow anything like it today. The 6 o clock intro theme takes things a little bit to an extreme. One can imagine Genghis Khan himself charging in on the set on his horse, as it stops mid stage, rearing up and kicking its forelegs. I love it dearly in its own right, but it's way too much for a news theme. I have a feeling 'someone got their way' on that one, as there must have been detractors.

I could recall LITERALLY before 2022 that there were multiple, and i mean MULTIPLE videos of the BBC News 1993 theme package, actually some parts of the Six O'Clock News package is considered *lost media*, because of mandatory KZbin copyright guidelines, which in turn brings the moderation into effect. I remember there being headline recap themes, and a stinger that sounds closely to that of the Hourly Bulletins.
