While I like the end result of these mods, I think the low-poly/low-res look of the textures of Valheim combined with the modern lighting effects is what gives it its "retro" visual identity that so many people love.

Okay my final sales pitch then! :) Vanilla game is so poorly optimised that these mods typically improve performance for many people, we’re talking increases in 10 to 20% sometimes. It’s strange, I have no idea why they don’t implement many of the changes we’ve made. Having said that heavily built up areas with many buildings are still an fps hit.

Honestly, my pack adds more mipmaps, and the shader overhaul changes a lot under the hood too. Try it. Perhaps not all, I think Seasonality can have an impact. But no, I'm actually 100% right on this one, many people have repeatedly told me about their gains on my discord channel.

In my city I typically get 5-15 fps because of the 100s of 1000s of build pieces, and w/this mod, that went up to 40-45, while being even better to look at. idk if I can go back now. Note: you really do need to install most of them to get the best effect, and the best performance increases. I'm hoping at some point, that they'll go back to the vanilla game, and make all of these optimizations by default, because when you get a huge place w/so much built around, it gets almost unplayable, doesn't matter how good your pc is.

@@intimaspace646 One pure ! step by step video of install would be greatfull. its feels like a mess. download here and there, and mix and replace ect ect. I think more players would love to use them all if install was better. I just did them all now, its say 6 plugings running. and just edit the grassdistance. I try the rusty Seasonality now. it say to download this, and then when thats done. Download Willybach's HD Seasonality and replace Rusty texstures as they are low res... but the Willybach's HD Seasonality dont only have texture folder it have all the same folder and files as Rusty, so all gets replaced, Why did I need the Rustys mods in the first place then, all is so confusning.

Why wait!!???? Therzie just dropped Deep North and Warfare Fire and Ice!!!! I have 97 mods in my current playlist, all quality of life and extra content. Working drawbridges, carts that function as storage AND crafting stations. Another one is EPIC LOOT!!!!! Which has patches to work with Therzies Warfare Fire and Ice!! Truly amazing.

Yeah try it out, plenty of people find a sizeable fps INCREASE to be honest. Vanilla doesn't use as many mipmaps, and the new shader is a real performance gain overall. Medium Version isn't updated yet, in a couple of days. If you're struggling with Higher perhaps try that one.

New plants and building parts are ignored. You will see green bushes and trees from Fruit Trees mod in winter. But the benefits from the HD mod makes it all better. I think, I will never ever play Valheim without the Seasonality mod.

I played over 1000 hours already the past couple of years without using any mods. This made me finally decide to give it a go. Figuring out how to add mods took me a few days of rabbit holing, and trial and error. I got it figured out, but it would of been nice if they added a guide for us noobs who never used mods. :)

I'm hoping you can help with a few quick answers here, as I don't do discord... So, I've gotten willybachs to work, and I love it..., But I cannot tell if badgers HD terrain and valheim skies are working, the "H" key does nothing and the dev commands for the grass texture thickness and the water caustics do not show up. I have checked everything a million times, the mods were inserted into Valheim>bepinex>plugins per your instructions on nexus, but... do you extract the PNG terrain tiles to the bundles folder like willys? Also, do you leave the placeholder.txt file directly in plugins as well? There are several other files Im not sure what to do with between the 4 mods I DL from nexus. (Willybachs, Badgers 4KHD terrain for willybachs, Valheim skies, and the 4K willybach texture pack. all the texture/terrain packs do is write over each other. No idea where the JSON file or the other dll's should end up, as they stay on the file page directly after the plugins folder lmao...thx in advance I really want to use the mods with willys bc I get about 10-15 better FPS so far.

Yeah all dlls go in BepInEx plug-ins folder. For the console commands to work you actually have to activate it in steam, instructions for that are in my man modpage. Then press F5 ingame. In terms of Valheim skies menu, it should be ‘H’ but I had an issue too at one point and so changed the letter in the config file. Might be another mod is using that letter.

@@intimaspace646 Low and behold as I am newer to mods, I did not have those files sent to r2modman, so it was just bypassing them all when I logged in via "modded"- so I got it working, H key is bound correctly, however the "skies" option on the left is empty and my log said "BVS failed to load urg tree" or something, idk at least its progress lol

@@brandx7711 yeah we don't recommend using mod managers, far easier to do it manually - just unzip all the mods except the main texture pack into BepinEx folder in Valheim folder. Also install BepinEx manually too.

No, it's client sider anyway, shouldn't be on a server. So one friend can have HD another can play with vanilla if they wish. Same with the HD terrain and portals mods etc.

the dlls go in the plugins folder, the main issue is not thunderstore, but if you use their mod manager which installs bepinex in it's own separate folder. So you'll need to make sure all the dlls (plugins) are in the same folder and the right one. My advice is any mod that needs BepinEx, install those ones manually in the Bepinex folder in your Valheim folder.

I have been using an amazing mod called Seasonal. It has all 4 seasons. Vegetation changes colors weather fits the weather perfectly and Winter you have snowy meadows black forest etc and even the sea becomes ice that you walk on it. Will this mod ruin the other? Both would be a blast and a huge upgrade to someone's gaming experience

the mods all have a config file, usually in Bepinex config folder, you can open that and find the entry for menu key and change it.

I'm seeing this also, and it is caused by Badgers Shading Overhaul. It happens to me as well even with either DX or Vulcan enabled. Remove the mod and it goes away. I'm only using the Badger HD Terrain and Willybach's HD Texture (Higher) which work fine without the shading overhaul.

Perhaps use console command ‘grassdensity’ and lower the value to 0.5 or something. Also if you’re using Seasonality that does affect fps quite a lot

Some animal, armor and weapons mods use kinda half HD textures, so they fit both with vanilla and HD packs.

If you use Badgers Terrain mod which my mod requires it fixes pop in but also allows console command to increase distance. Default is 40. Type Grassdistance 100 or more. Also can tweak Grass density. If you I want more fps.

that mod manager creates it's own Bepinex folder, and usually causes issues for more people. I think you can use that for most mods but not the HD terrain or my texture pack.

Yeah so for the life of me I cannot get Willybach's HD to work. I think it is the Badger's terrain mod that is stopping Willybach's mod from working, because Badger's terrain mod is not working properly, I don't see improvement with that mod, only wonkiness; it is making my earth walls look like they are made of hay...? The rest just looks vanilla (the water looks slightly better, but that's it, nothing else) And I cannot find any solutions on Google. The other mods are working fine (portal, skies)

@@intimaspace646 Yep that was the problem; I used the Nexus mod and it messed everything up. I wish that was made clearer, would have saved me hours and frustration. It does say manually is preferred, but clearly it is not just preferred but required because it did not even work with Vortex.

​@@intimaspace646 Why would I look on the post page? As a beginner I look at the description because that is where it tells me what to do, and guess what? That actually says "preferably manually". Obviously if the mod actually breaks with mod manager, manually isn't just preferred, but a must. Not to mention on the download page there is an actual button to download with Vortex. Again, if the mod breaks with that, why even give that option? I am not here to argue with anyone, I am super grateful there are people making great mods. I am just showing some gaps where things could be made a bit smoother. and updating the website is a very easy fix. Anyway; hope you have a merry Christmas!

Unfortunately the mod doesnt work well for me. The Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp look ok but Plains are straight up broken. Almost no grass unlike in the video. Since part of the mod works thats as far as my "skill" goes, to put everything in the right folder haha. I wont be fixing it or trying to figure out which file has a problem with what in my system etc. I dont have any other graphical mods whatsoever. So conflicts are out. Also Im having terrible pop ins for the grass, never noticed it was that bad originally. Something went wrong :/ Anyways, from what I did see tho, it is a nice mod. Some things I really liked some I didnt. I do recommend giving it a shot tho, its a question of taste after all. I might recommend choosing lower textures tho, I went with the "Higher" and I really think some textures were way too sharp and crisp for the game haha.

So most mods except my texture pack depend on BepInEx. Okay here’s a rough workflow. Download > BepInEx > Willybach’s HD texture pack > Badgers HD terrain > My HD terrain tiles (available on main texture pack mod page, and overwrite Badgers HD tiles (unless you prefer his) > HD Portals (again in my texture pack modpage) > Badgers Valheim Skies (make sure it’s the file labelled as being for Willybach’s HD version) then again on my modpage download my Aurora HD skies > Badgers Shading Overhaul > Rusty’s Seasonality from Thunderstore (more up to date) > Willybach’s HD Seasonality… there simple lol

Also it’s fairly easy anyway, just install most mods not BepInEx plugins folder, and the main pack into the appropriate folder. The instructions on the modpage are fine for the 1000s of people who’ve already downloaded it. Edit: I might consider adding in some sort of a flow diagram on main page, that’s not a bad idea.

@@EbrSha should be installed manually, there is a way apparently but it’s a bit complicated. If you’re worried about uninstalling, you just need to verify game files in Steam to return to vanilla.

I don't understand why most of these mods aren't available on Thunderstore. If I do want mods active that is what I use as it is so simple to use, but only the Seasonal mod is on it.

Thunderstore literally can't handle this mod, it's too large. I tried. Also, Thunderstore is awful for managing a mod IMO, no posts, no feedback, and they don't reward modders are all. Is that reason enough?

I have a 2070 super, if you have that or better you can handle it easy. But yeah wait for medium version or older GPU version if you I have an older GPU.

this is what the game should of looked like if devs weren't lazy. Low poly high res textures is the best retro look of all time. Shame about all the added blur in this showcase defeating the oldschool look.

I disagree, the game’s atmosphere is mostly through its lighting not textures IMO and colour schemes. I still feel it’s very unique.

The gameplay, systems, and even combat in Valheim are far superior. That's why it is such a popular game. They aren't even the same genre of game, so the comparison is ridiculous out of the gate. All that said, I appreciate the original chunky art style and textures. I will still give this mod a run.

These look good and I support the modders, but I personally prefer the vanilla look moreso because of the visual identity of the game more than anything. I am aware these mods can also boost performance, but I'm on a super low-end budget pc and I can get 90 fps on a good day from this game. No other game from the last 2 decades can even get close on my computer. Imma still like the video, but this simply ain't for me. Still good work though!! I recommend staying away from Nexus however if you're looking to make revenue from modding. They take as much if not more of a cut than Apple or Google.

@@Davernn Nexus doesn’t really give anything. There’s no financial reward really, and the mods are free to download, the new scheme they introduced a few years ago gives you a few dollars per month, it’s negligible.

Waw, thanks. I hate it. Slapping on HD texture on low poly models just makes Valheim lose all its charm and vibe. This just ends up looking like a 2003 game.

@intimaspace646 i was recommended this video by someone else, watched it, and said my opinion. An unsaid opinion is just an inner thought. But I do like the lighting mods. I might try them out.

@ yes I do recommend that one if you prefer low res. It’s pretty cool, I played for a while in a sort of Zelda breath of the wild world.
