This is the only performance I remember from that season. For a moment, American Idol stopped being a Karaoke contest and this woman, with her false notes and lack of restraint, transcended the show: the raw emotion fits the song so well, it makes me think this is the way it was supposed to be sung (actually, the Broadway version is closer to Zoanette's now, with emphasis on feeling rather than perfection). Anyone who's been to a rock concert knows singing is a lot more than being melodious and hitting the right notes at the right time. The Rolling Stones, for example, often sound awful live. But when you're there, you feel *it* --Zoanette brought that to us.

I remember watching this when it was aired and it's so much better than this muffled recording. Her song surprised me so much I've come back on KZbin to understand how she managed that. She sung this like a praise hymn in celebration of the gift of life. It was powerful. I don't come back to listen to any other song from AI except this one.
