Hello Carey, It's nice to see your video's also as an "old one" in the pc-world and my first pc I build was about I guess for about 30 years ago. All the years after my first build I build lot's of other pc's but only for hobby, so not as an professional like you. But even with my experience it is always good to see other people building pc's and see how other people do things. Sometime I think maybe you better do it this way but also many time I think that his way is better en never thought about. The way you explain is very good and especially for the new ones, learning them how you do it the right way. They can better learn from someone like you than from a young one who thinks he al knows how it works. Anyway, thanx for the video's and I'm looking forward to new ones. Very good explanation. I have already changed all my HDD SATA drives to SSD drives. But the prices are dropping soooo fast, I paid $29 for a Kingston 240GB drive on Amazon. I believe I am getting MUCH MUCH more than a 3:1 increase improvement in performance.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind to finally migrate to SSDs, Carey! But I'm a wee bit confused - At 7:27 you said NEVER to refrag an SSD (I've heard that elsewhere too), but I've been using Auslogics Disk Defrag (on my old-tech mechanical HDDs) since the past many years and in recent updates they've given an option for 'SSD Optimization'. Is that the same thing? Should I use this option on my incoming SSD drives? How frequently? Any help would be appreciated. :-)

The typical wisdom is not to defragment SSD drives because it puts extra wear on the drive without improving performance. The SSD Optimization from your disk defrag tool probably TRIMs the SSD, which is the only thing nessecary to keep your SSD running quickly (aside from trying to avoid completely filling the drive). I remember reading about SSD's like 12 years ago. The price and capacity did not make a great buy. Today its a different story. No defrag, faster bootup, and software startups.

I always thought that "Static State Drive" would make a better name than "Solid State". But I suppose the word "static" can bring some negative connotations when talking about computer hardware.

2:14 although they're not used as frequently now I still have a 500gb PATA/IDE drive and what's great about them is they're great for inexpensive backup and storage. They're cheap on eBay brand new because it's older tech.

The SSD price is worth it, but for now I'd recommend getting both. As stated, HDDs still have a lot more storage room. Personally, I have a 2TB HDD, and a 40GB SSD. The SSD was still more expensive, I think around 50$ more than the HDD. The difference is that when I loaded the OS off my HDD, it took about 45 seconds, as a factory new PC. My OS running off my SSD could load up to the desktop from being turned off in about 5 seconds. I pretty much store all the important games, pictures, media, etc. on my HDD, and run the OS and all the important programs (AntiVirus, scans, etc.) off my SSD. It works fantastic, I get both the speed I need for booting my PC / keeping it clean, while having the storage to contain tons of games, music, etc.

Yeah mine's pretty much just OS. No reason to get 120GB when I use about 20GB total, and put everything else on the HDD. Big HDD for storage, small SSD for running the computer. Save money on a big SSD by getting a big HDD that runs functionally the same, with way more space. As I said, 2TB HDD was cheaper than 40GB SSD, getting 120GB sounds expensive.

Great video. Keep 'em coming you provide very concise (and in my view) the most accurate information. Quick question if you do not mind. You have mentioned in a previous video that we have not had to really defrag HDDs since the 9x days (if I remember correctly). With current HD technology now, and better (for the most part) Windows OS', why is this still a feature? Shouldn't MS remove defragging altogether?

It's a part of the Windows file system that causes fragmentation. There's probably some possible compatability issues that would arise if they were to really change it around and follow other models.
