I just purchased the Flex 4K model and it's so tiny and light but works great. I was using the Extend model and that was built like a tank. It was heavy aluminum with fins for cooling. It also worked fine but I just wanted to upgrade to ATSC 3.0. Anyway, the new Flex 4K works as advertised on my Macs, Nvidia Shield, Roku, Fire TV Cube and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. No problems and good reception using a roof-mounted antenna in Queens, NYC. It scanned 139 channels although I didn't test all of them, but the ones I tested worked fine. I didn't test recording because I don't need it. I'm satisfied with it. When I installed the HDHomerun app on my Mac, the firmware on the Flex 4K was upgraded and every device on my network worked fine. That's it. A simple and easy upgrade if you want it.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience with the HDHomeRun Flex 4K device and how you've integrated it with Plex. It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with the HDHomeRun devices and that they've been rock solid for you. I appreciate the detailed walkthrough of the setup process, including the connections and the configuration in Plex. It's unfortunate to hear that Plex isn't yet compatible with ATSC 3.0 channels, but it's good to know that you found a workaround by not adding those channels. I haven't used the HDHomeRun devices myself, but your video has certainly provided valuable insights for anyone looking to set up a similar system. It's always helpful to see real-world experiences and tips from fellow users. As for ATSC 3.0 compatibility, it's interesting to hear that you're prepared for it, even though it's not widely available yet in your area. Being future-proofed for technology changes is a smart move. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights, and I hope your setup continues to work well for you. Looking forward to more content from you in the future!

Thanks for the video! I literally just learned that you can use an antenna / tuner with plex less then an hour ago and I'm very interested in it. I do however have a question, I have a plex media server set up and my family uses it as well for movies and what not. If i did this would they be able to view the live TV like they do the media server? (Meaning they have their own accounts and I have granted them library access) Or is it only available to my account?

Have you experimented with the Channels app with HD HomeRun 4K? Unless I'm mistaken, the Plex guide is not able to integrate local channels for those of us who are trying to use antenna for local channels in conjunction with streaming apps like You Tube TV, Dish, DirecTV stream, et al. Is Channels DVR any better at this than Plex?
@av_nirvana
@av_nirvana Жыл бұрын
I've not messed with Channels. While the PLEX app doesn't yet work with ATSC3.0 signals, our broadcasters here aren't utilizing them for anything above a general simulcast - there's no 4K content being broadcast, not even Olympics or Super Bowl - so I haven't bothered to test the other options. I use PLEX primarily as a movie server for content not available in Kaleidescape, and the DVR is used sparingly, so I haven't prioritized it. I may look into doing a video on the Channels DVR app if I have time this spring.

Thanks! Nice video. I live down in the Salem, OR area. Picking up the Nextgen broadcasts out of Portland with the Flex 4K. I had the same experience you did trying to remap the channels in Plex. The Flex 4k is a big improvement over the PCI tuner card I've been using. @xxxtreem11
@xxxtreem11 Жыл бұрын
Figured this out. Plex will only map a channel once. You have to uncheck the lower HD channel and then enable the HEVC channel with the lower guide channel. It kinda sucks because now you don't have separate channels in the guide and when you tune to 22.1, you're actually tuning to 122.1 on the HDHomeRun. If you look at the tuner summary on the HDHomeRun, i was surprised to find that. The problem still is the audio. There's no audio on any of the ATSC3.0 channels on any of my devices via Plex.
@StuffOfInterest
@StuffOfInterest Жыл бұрын
@@xxxtreem11 From what I've read, the issue is in the ffmpeg library used by Plex. That library doesn't support AC-4 audio (yet). Until it does, Plex isn't going to work with ATSC 3.0. For some reason, ATSC 3.0 went with a licensed audio codec which makes it very difficult for open source software, which Plex relies on, to support. There are going to be more issues as broadcasters enable DRM in their signals. The HDHR software still can't handle ATSC 3.0 DRM, but it is getting closer.

Hi Travis.....I just installed my HD HomeRun 4K Flex and it is working well. However, I'm having trouble adding adding additional channels in Plex after I upgraded my antenna. The original antenna had 25 OTA channels and the new channel adding 10 additional channels for a total of 35. All 35 channels show up and work on the HDHR, but when I log into the Plex dashboard, all 35 channels show, but only the first 25 are checked. When I try to add the additional channels along with the mapping instructions, the changes will not save in Plex. I installed Plex on my Synology NAS (also new), so I was considering if I should uninstall Plex and reinstall it on my Synology or if you might have a different suggestion.

I then removed the DVR from the Plex app and then reinstalled it. Rescanned the channels and this time had 4 of the previously unchecked/unmapped channels were automatically checked and ENABLED. I still have a few channels that I would like to enable, but it appears that there is some type of restriction/block that prevents the adding of channels that do not automatically populate with a check and the associated mapping. New subscriber here. I have an older Plex server on a Windows PC in my home network. I might actually go with a NAS with Plex on it. But the subscription I have been paying for and not using is no longer good. I have to go to the Plex site to see if I can get this going. My streaming cable company has recently started charging $40/mo for local broadcast channels. So I am thinking of moving to Plex with my HDHR for my 60+ channels I can get with my antenna. Any advice from my long note? Thanks
@av_nirvana
@av_nirvana Жыл бұрын
Not sure why the subscription would no longer be valid. But if you’re not able to get them to fix that issue I might consider Emby or Channels as DVR. I believe they are both able to take advantage of the ATSC3 broadcasts, so you’d be moving forward into a system that is ready when they start broadcasting higher quality content. I’ve used Emby in the past and it was also pretty slick, I just ended up preferring the PLEX app over Emby on the playback devices. You can also use both at the same time and only pay for DVR option on one, and use the other for organization and playback without requiring the full license.

Actual 4k broadcast content is extremely rare. Some markets have put special events like the Super Bowl or the Olympics in 4K, but 99% of what you're seeing is simply a simulcast of the 1080p/720p content that's on the primary channel. What's happening is the app you're using (HD Home Run or PLEX or whatever) is upconverting everything to 3840x2160 and sending that signal to your TV. The biggest difference I've noticed between the ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 channels is audio quality. The sound is typically "bigger" on the 3.0 channels - not sure if it's actually a more robust signal or if it's post-processing that's happening somewhere and it's not as accurate as the 1.0 signal.

PLEX can record on all four tuners simultaneously, or more, if your computer is capable. PLEX will see whatever number of tuners you have available, so if you install a Flex4K it will see it as a single device, but four tuners. I wanted more than two tuners because I have been recoding a lot of syndicated shows to archive without buying discs - Frasier, Happy Days, WKRP, etc. there were times when it needed more than two tuners to record everything scheduled, especially if you want to start recording a minute early, etc. So basically a single device will be seen as multiple tuners within PLEX.

Does the Flex 4K come with any free HDHomerun DVR service timeline? Would like to try before buy. PLEX is working well with it and my 2021 LG QLED has issues with ATSC 3.0 tuner

Not to the HD HomeRun tuner. PLEX used to have the capability built-in but it was removed, though PLEX has duplicated a lot of the same content/streams with its own “Channels” feature. I have never used IPTV services so I’m not 100% clear on what they offer but there are a ton of streaming channels available by default in PLEX.

If you are recording a show with Plex, and the antenna signal degrades at any time during the recording - will it STOP the recording of that show? Or will it continue recording - just showing a blank or pixelated screen - until it can recover? If I'm recording a 30 minute show, then it should keep recording for the full 30 minutes... and not just stop attempting to process the signal if the signal ever degrades. That way ... even if the signal drops for a few seconds here and there, you can still basically watch the show. And even if the signal completely drops for the second half of the show, the recording software should continue to attempt to record, in case the signal comes back at any time. I'm testing out another OTA DVR, and finding that it may be just giving up on the recording as soon as there is any drop in signal. This makes the device essentially useless as a DVR, since OTA signals may often have momentary blips... that doesn't mean you just stop recording the show, or reset the device when this occurs.
@av_nirvana
@av_nirvana 2 жыл бұрын
PLEX will stop the recording if the signal goes out and remains out. It will record through some basic glitches or brief signal losses, but if the signal fades and doesn't come back (I'm not sure the exact time frame, approximately 30 seconds), it will abort the recording. There is a setting in the DVR options to "keep partial recordings" which will dictate whether PLEX saves or throws away what was recorded. Also, this is a PLEX behavior, not the Flex4K.
@macrosman
@macrosman 2 жыл бұрын
@@av_nirvana That's a shame ... it should at least give the option of attempting the full recording - if not making that the default behavior - and should package the whole scheduled recording as a single video - not chunk it up into separate parts. Anyhow ... the OTA DVR I am currently playing with - it appears I got a defective unit, which was aborting any transmissions after a few seconds, regardless of the signal. I got a replacement unit, and so far it seems to be working as expected... which is that if the signal drops for a time, the recording continues in spite of this... that's what I hoped it would do. I need to do more testing, though, to see how consistent this is.

I had this issue. A very high wind day was shaking my antenna (60mph gusts) and the 8VSB modulation used with ATSC 1.0 don't like that much movement so I got a few shows with some pixelation and drop outs but it did record the shows

These devices connect to your network via ethernet, not directly to a computer. They are then accessible from any device on your network. Adding PLEX to the configuration allows you to access when you're away from your network.

Not exactly clear on what you’re asking. The device has an accompanying mobile app that is used to configure it. It doesn’t require PLEX. For just viewing on your local network, this is all you need. For viewing outside of your network, you’d need additional equipment. For DVR functionality, you need PLEX (or similar) or a USB hard drive and a nominal fee to HDHomeRun for extended functionality.

I was not running a UPS in this configuration but I am now that the setup is more permanently installed. This was a quick temporary installation right after the move just to get the DVR back up and running. We have since built out the theater and this entire setup is now in a closet on the other end of the room.

It would be helpful to change the title of this video or add a snippet at the beginning that indicates this is not actually supported by Plex rather than the viewer watching all the way to the end to find that out.
@av_nirvana
@av_nirvana Жыл бұрын
The HDHomeRun FLEX 4K is absolutely supported by PLEX. ATSC 3.0 is not. It still gives you four tuners to use inside of PLEX. While it doesn't say this in the title, it also does not specifically mention ATSC 3.0 in the title, which is the only feature not available in PLEX.

I'll never understand these goofy things, it's just another device for the sake of another device! Just like a Firestick, totally pointless unless you just want another remote control to kick around. Everything that everyone already has will run the software, PLEX, so you already have the devices, plural. Unless you all have some uncontrollable urge to get just one more remote control.... Well, I guess, to each their own. Cheers 🍻
@ballstadt
@ballstadt 2 жыл бұрын
This doesn’t add a remote, this adds the capability to use an existing PLEX server as a DVR for OTA channels. PLEX does not include a tuner, so that’s what this device is. I wanted more tuners available to record/view more content simultaneously, so I added this new device.
@Finite-Tuning
@Finite-Tuning 2 жыл бұрын
@@ballstadt: If all you wanted was a tuner, then why not simply add a tuner/capture card to the server you already have? It would cost you about $100 for a good card which is $50 less than this PLEX black box thing, but you would have so much more power and configuration options available. all the while performing the same exact functions for less money, using equipment you already own. I'm sorry, but these black boxes make no sense to me. They're all just another device for the sake of yet another device. There ain't nothing that all these add on boxes can do that the PC you already own can't do better than, usually for free. In this case you need a tuner card for the PC, but it's still way cheaper than buying yet another black box. Cheers 🍻.
@ballstadt
@ballstadt 2 жыл бұрын
@@Finite-Tuning buy a card and have to pull my server out of the rack, open it up and install, when I don’t have any open PCI slots vs adding a small black box into the home networking router. Also, “buying a PCI card” does not qualify as “using what you already have”. By definition.
@ballstadt
@ballstadt 2 жыл бұрын
Also, my equipment rack, where my server is located, is nowhere near the antenna input, but there is already a CAT6 run existing. This was by far the better option in my situation. The HDHR box is literally the same product as the PCI card tuners except it’s connected via network instead of inserted into the server itself. This is not a streaming box, it’s an external networked tuner.
@Finite-Tuning
@Finite-Tuning 2 жыл бұрын
@@ballstadt: As I stated, “buying a PCI card” for $100 was the exception to your pre-existing hardware, otherwise you already had everything you needed. But you do you, I'm not judging, I'm just failing to understand is all. Everyone of these black boxes just end up costing more time and money for less performance and features and function then what everyone already has in the PC they already own. It simply does not compute in my mind, it's like adding 2+2 and totaling -1. It makes no sense to me that's all I'm sayin. Cheers 🍻
