what happens if you connect one tv with hdmi 2.1 full bandwidth and a gaming monitor that relies on DSC / display stream compression? This is the only concern I have at the moment
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
DSC will be transparent to the matrix (it is implemented on the display side without altering the EDID), with the idea being to keep the data stream below the maximum rate supported by the monitor without altering the available resolutions. The matrix will make whatever the highest resolution supported by both displays available even if one of the displays requires DSC to limit the data stream size. Hope this helps out!

Much appreciated and I Agree - I suspect we will start to see more 2.1 inputs on switches, splitters, extractors this year as more devices start to support it (TV's have been slow to offer more than 1 or 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs as well). Reminds me of HDMI 2.0 uptake from 1.4... Hopefully we will see a few more good streaming boxes, receivers, and TV's supporting 2.1 start to become mainstream this year as well. I like the look of the x3000i, with 3000 lumens and 4.16 ms lag it may be the real deal! Thanks again for checking out my review!

As long as your soundbar is connected directly to your tv, earc will work and your soundbar will play audio. This splitter supports atmos, dts, etc, so digital audio sent from your blu-ray player will pass through the splitter to the tv and then the tv and soundbar will communicate via earc. Hope this helps out.

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed my review. This will cover your use case and is still one of the best options when you do not require audio extraction or the ability to show a different source on two monitors. If you think you may add a second monitor at some point (like adding a projector…) and would like to be able to swap the XBOX and PS5 between the two displays, the OREI BK-202A is like the BK-22 but with matrix capabilities and optical audio extraction. I did a more recent review on the 202a here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6fJnHSbhcRml5Y Hope this helps out!

I have a a/v receiver that the HDMI doesn't support ARC or 4K and the optical out from the TV lowers the sound quality noticeably. Will this switcher/splitter out put audio to the receiver and video to the TV at the same time? This would save me from replacing my receiver which is very good still except for the no ARC/eARC support.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
This is not the right solution for you as it will force the video to be output at whatever the highest resolution both the TV and receiver support (likely 1080P). There is a solution which will allow you TV to remain in 4k while separating (extracting) the audio out over HDMI (as well as optical and rca) for your receiver. I will be reviewing this shortly, but here is a link in the meantime: www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLTDG8B2?ref=myi_title_dp You can also accomplish this with an HDMI matrix such as the one I reviewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6fJnHSbhcRml5Y but the first option is exactly what you are looking for. Can I use this device to connect my 4090 with only one HDMI 2.1 port with an LG G1 and LG C2 display using 4K@120hz, HDR, VRR as well as G-sync?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
It can discplay 4K120 and HDR at the same time however VRR/G-sync require bidirectional communication between the 4090 and the display so it can only be used on one monitor at a time (that is with a splitter such as this one). Simultaneous display of VRR on multiple monitors/TVs would require re-encoding / syncing the signal to the second display and I am not aware of any device currently that can do that (it would need a ton of processing power to reduce latency below the VRR framerate). Hope this helps out.

Thanks for the question. This switch does not extract audio to an optical out, so it is not the answer for your A50's. At his point there are very limited options for optical audio extraction from HDMI 2.1. The HD Fury is the only one I'm aware of, and it is $550 USD... I'm sure other options will become available soon this year, so unless you need all of the other capabilities the Fury offers, I would hang on for a while. @@askdrtk so I tried a different splitter from avstar. And because the LG C1 doesn’t support DTS:X, I still can’t select that sound output from my series x. So I swapped the series X to output 2 and the sound bar to output 1. And I was able to enable DTS:X but my video quality was limited to 720p with no other hdmi 2.1 features available. This was in copy edid mode. My sound bar is only hdmi 2.0 so I thought it would just be limited to that but no, it was 720p. When I switched to the other edids it was back to normal hdmi 2.1 for my series x but no DTS:X available. Is there any way to get around this? I just want to get DTS:X on my sound bar without having to upgrade to an hdmi 2.1 sound bar. Is the VRROOM the only solution? Or would that not even work?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
I have seen different gear behave in different ways with splitters, so unfortunately there is no "one" answer when it comes to compatibility. An HDMI 2.1 matrix that allows individual EDIDs that can be custom set is the solution that is used in complex 8K/4K/... setups will work with just about any combination of TVs and other gear, but at this point options are very limited. These allow you to manually assign the capabilities seen by the source (series x) and then sends a compatible signal to each display / sound bar. The AVProedge AC-MX-42X is one such device ($1299usd), but as with the HDMI2.0 launch, in a short time, I expect affordable options to become available. Here is a link so you can check it out, but I recommend hanging on for a while longer... www.avproedge.com/ac-mx-42x.html

@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
I have a Samsung blu-ray and TV as well. Occasionally due to auto configuration within either the TV or blu-ray player when first connected through a switch, the audio settings might have been changed. SInce it is your blu-ray with not audio and not the firestick (assuming that is working), I suspect your blu-ray is set to Dolby DIgital (Bitstream) and your TV is set to PCM as a result of the firestick being connected to the switch. If the firestick says "Best Available" try changing it to PCM and then set the TV audio and blu-ray to PCM. Hopefully this should get things working. If not, you can also try setting the TV and blu-ray to Bitream (Dolby DIgital) and then also setting the firestick to Dolby Digital. Let me know how it goes.

@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. HDMI switches and splitters (with some very expensive exceptions suitable for broadcast, not gaming due to latency) pass through the specifications of your monitor to the source, so your ps5 will still see that your monitor does not support HDMI 2.1, In other words, HDMI switches and splitters route but do not convert signals. For HDMI 2.1 switches and splitters, being 2.1 compatible means they support sufficient bandwidth for HDMI 2.1 resolutions and other features. Hope this helps out and thanks for the question!

What if I use the PS5 and send 4k 120HDR+VRR signal to both my TV and Denon? Both the TV and the AVR support 4k120 HDR and VRR. I want to send 4k120 HDR+VRR and 7.1 LPCM audio (which only the Denon supports) and use the TV input from the splitter and audio from the denon , will that work? Or will the audio get downmixed before it is sent to the denon because the TV only supports 2 channel stereo in PCM. I know for a fact that if one of the outputs , say the AVR is only 4k60 and the TV can support 4k120 then the splitter will send 4k60 to both , but does this also happen for the audio signal? Or is the downmixing taking place at the end point after the split? I am doing this because the Denon X3700H has flickering issue when passing VRR signals so I want to get just the audio from it and video from the TV
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Great Question! Audio mode is managed by EDID in the same way as video. On a splitter with "auto EDID" such as this one, both HDMI outputs are sent the lowest spec video and audio available on both "displays." In you case, the Denon will get 2 channel PCM as long as your TV is connected. In order to accomplish your goal, you will need an HDMI splitter or matrix with manual EDID control for each output. I am aware of a number of units that will do this with HDMI 2.0 (4k60, no VRR), but for your application the only HDMI 2.1 unit I am aware of the will accomplish this with 120HDR and VRR is the HDfury VRROOM. At the moment the VRROOM is selling for $549USD, but I am hoping a few more options will become available soon from OREI or EZCOO. Hope this helps out!

@@askdrtk I had an old HDMI splitter lying around , I think it was HDMI 1.4 or something. I gave it a try to see what kind of audio I will get with the same setup as above and I was able to get 7.1 PCM from the denon. BUT , for some weird reason the surround backs are switched with the side surrounds on a few games , maybe coz it's an old and cheap splitter..I don't know exactly why. Hopeful that Orei makes 1×2 HDMI audio extractor , that would save me so much, the Vrroom is so expensive
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe the odd audio behavior is a result of incompatibility between the HDMI 2.1 EDID and your older HDMI 1.4 splitter. When the splitter sees an EDID it is not setup for, it may have a default it uses to route audio (which is incorrect). I agree that, while it is an excellent device, the VRROOM is an expensive option. I am certain we will see other options available soon as the same scenario happened when HDMI 2.0 was introduced. As usual, the "early adopter" surcharge is in place for HDMI 2.1, although I am beginning to see affordable options released regularly. I as well hope a few switch and matrix options are available soon.

This splitter will not have issues with audio channel routing, but will still output the lowest common supported video and audio formats to both the TV and Denon. It will "work" but not with optimal video and audio on each device. For your application I would recommend waiting for an option with assignable EDID for each output. I am hoping to see some options become available later this year.

@askdrtk

Unfortunately no. Refresh rate requires sync and as this is a splitter (do not re-encode/scale) framerate will default to the lowest supported on both devices, in this case 4K60 on the Live Gamer 4K. At this point the HDFury 8K VRROOM 40Gbps is the answer. It will pass 4K120 to your tv and send 4K60 to your Live Gamer 4K for capture. It is an expensive option at $549 USD...

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. The source checks the EDID for the specs from both displays and outputs the lowest common supported frame rate. The splitter does not re-encode the video to each output. Scaling resolution is easier than altering frame rates, so there are many splitter and matrix options that can up/downscale, but at the moment, I’m not aware of any splitters offering real-time encoders that can alter frame rate, although there may be commercial options that are $$$$.

I currently use a HDMI 2.0 cable, will I need HDMi 2.1 cables? Or can I use my existing ones?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
If your gear is working fine with your existing cables, the short answer is you shouldn't need to change them. Both HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 (to a greater extent) tend to become less reliable as length increases. In very general terms, most under 2m have little issue meeting specs, but when length starts getting above 4m that's when cable quality / specs really show up. That said, having a 2m cable from your source connected to the input on the BK-22 and a 2m cable between the output on the BK-22 and your display, is not like having a longer cable as the switch repeats the signal, so again you should be fine. I have tested a number of HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 cables (1-3m in length) with this switch/splitter and all worked flawlessly. I also tested a 5m cable from the switch to my display without issue. Hope this helps out and thanks for the question!

All good! Longer cables often work well, it really all depends on quality, and sadly, price and quality don't always match up with cables.If your 7.5m is working between your PS5 and display, I would expect it to work between the switch and the display. Adding another cable between the PS5 and the switch won't make a difference and yes, with the two inputs your can connect both the PS5 and another HDMI source (iptv box, computer, XBOX, BluRay, etc...).I believe all should work well - let me know how it goes.

Pass through on capture cards is ok (I used to do that with my 4k60 mk2 as well) but the extra heat, noise, and power draw wasn’t great unless I was recording or streaming anyways… I also like the ability to play in full res and downscale for streaming with dedicated outboard gear instead of relying on the computer to scale the video and until HDMI 2.1 capture cards are “ready for prime time” this is the preferred setup imo.

@askdrtk

VRR need bi-directional communication with the display, so for two monitors no, but for a monitor and a soundbar or receiver, yes (at least in the tests I went through). I also have a review on the brand new OREI BK-202A 2x2 HDMI2.1 matrix (which has advanced EDID control and both digital and analog audio extraction) going live next week...

What about the input delay? I'd plan to use its mirror function so I can Send 1440p 120Hz directly to my monitor from my Xbox Series S, while sending a mirror signal to my Capture card (As my Elgato HD60 pro won't even passthrough 120hz AT ALL) Is there any latency added as this will MAJORLY affect my purchase decision.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
Latency is not an issue with this device, however it does not downscale or adjust refresh rates separately for each output. If you connect your 1440p 120Hz monitor and HD60 pro, the splitter will output a signal compatible with the HD60 pro on both outputs. You will lose 1440p 120Hz and instead end up with 1080p 60Hz on both the monitor and capture card as that is(as you said) the highest spec the HD60 pro will work with. The splitter you are looking for is one that will pass through 1440p 120Hz to one output and downscale/reduce refresh to 1080p 60Hz on the other output. Downscaling is not an issue, but to downscale and reduce refresh rate to be compatible with the HD60 pro is only available on commercial broadcast matrix splitters which are very expensive. It would be far less expensive overall to upgrade your capture card (which admittedly is not inexpensive) . Some good options that should carry you forward for a few years include the Elgato HD60X, AverMedia Live Gamer Ultra, and the ASUS TUF Gaming. There are however a few lower cost alternatives such as the DIGITNOW 4K Plus that will do what you are looking for. Hope this helps out!

To capture encrypted signals using the XR1 Lite and other cards, while software is available, most often using an HDMI splitter is the answer. You would connect one output from the splitter to your monitor/TV and the other to your XR1 Lite. The splitter will take care of HDCP and you will be able to capture on your XR1 Lite. For HDMI 2.1, the BK-22 is the answer. It has been out of stock for a while, but I recently heard from OREI that it will be back in stock soon. Hope this helps out!

I wonder what latency measurements look like for this unit
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 жыл бұрын
While I don’t have a latency tester, I did video (at 120fps) myself pressing a button on my DS4 wired controller with my monitor in the same shot. I found the delay between pressing “fire” and the game (MKX) responding on screen to be less than 17 frames (142ms). Knowing that the PS4 latency with the DS4 wired controller is about 110ms and my monitor is about 10ms, that leaves less than 22ms for the splitter/switch. This of course is not as accurate as using an actual tester, and with the PS4 running at 60 Hz there are limitations, but I found I couldn’t really tell the difference playing with or without the splitter/switch. Thanks for the question. I should have included this in the review, but I hope this helps out.

Unless you're watching a display the size of a wall or larger.......... 8K doesn't matter.
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
I don't believe 8K is going to catch on as mainstream as quickly as 4k did, at least not any time soon. I think the biggest reason most of us want HDMI 2.1 is 4K120Hz. Since 4K120 is not officially supported by HDMI 2.0b (it will sometimes work, but marginal at best in my experience), and with DIsplayPort frequently not showing up on large format televisions, I think we'll see a lot more HDMI 2.1 gear over the next year (I have some new 2.1 gear in for testing).

@@askdrtk don't get me wrong I'm glad 8K is out there and it's extremely useful with the right environment but it's not something that is going to make an impact in our living rooms. It's mostly useful for large public environments. Concerts, stadiums, large public viewing like museums etc. Auditoriums presentations with giant video screens. The very large size of the screen with 8K is a much improved level of clarity and it's very useful for public and business interest..... However when people start acting like they need 8K in their living room on their television. I've even had some fools angrily argue with me how much they can see a difference between 1080P and 4k on a cell phone. A cell phone!!!!....... It's very laughable. People don't understand what they are talking about when it comes to the differences between these resolutions. The only way you see a difference in quality is by increasing the size of the screen you are viewing. 4K looks very good on large displays over 1080p but as I said unless people plan on watching their entire wall, 4K should do perfectly fine. I'm not going to see any difference really between 4K and 8K on a 65 inch screen. The human eye is not that good.

OREI is a USA company based in Skokie Illinois and my review sample was shipped directly to me from that location. The BK22 is designed in the USA and manufactured in China. In addition to the usual CE and RoHS certifications, it is also FCC (US) certified and I have found the build quality and reliability to be excellent in daily use. It is more expensive than other HDMI 2.1 switches I have tested, however it is also a splitter so it is not a direct comparison. The HDFURY VRROOM is far more expensive, but again offers additional features vs the BK22 so it is also not a direct comparison. The BK22 has been selling out regularly, but has been available (in and out of stock) directly from OREI as well as amazon.com. When I last checked it was not available on aliexpress although this may change. As with anything, copies / knockoffs may exist.
