Vray Dome and Lock Texture to Icon + Vray HDR texture!! So easy!

Actually the default center of the Spherical Dome Light projection in VRay is not the Dome Light gizmo but the eye (transform gizmo) of any camera chosen for rendering and that's not by accident - it's programmed to make the straight correlation between your Virtual Physical Camera in the CGI scene and the actual camera used to produce the HDRi image (you can check it while looking at the ground projection through the camera downwards in the viewport - the center of projection can be shifted away from the camera by using the projection parameters in the HDR Bitmap, but not by moving the Dome Light). So, assuming that little detail, the right way to do this trick is to match the Dome Light with the position of the currently used physical camera - then link only the Dome Light's translation operators (Translate X,Y,Z) to it. Tick the box in the Dome Light rollout called "Lock texture to icon". After that the Sun Target can be placed on the Dome Light and link its translation to it (same in the video). And finally you can use the selected camera view to move the Sun position until it matches the Azimuth and Altitude angles with those coming from the Spherical HDR image and link it to the Dome Light - that way you can freely move the camera around the scene without changing the corrected Sun position and it will follow the HDR image when you rotate the Dome Light. Changing the "Size multiplier" in the Vray Sun rollout will affect the softness of the shadows in the scene, but you need to consider something else - it will also change the Sun size appearance in the Diffuse and Specular passes, which can result in unwanted differences with the HDR.

A great solution, I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to align the vray sun to the position of the sun in the hdri image, link the vray sun and the vray sun target to the vray dome light and then flag the "lock texture to icon" option in the "Dome Light" section of the vray dome light settings. For me it seems to work.

In my experience u don't need to put a light for the sun if u're using a nice hdri (like pether Guthrie hdri, hdri skies...). The problem with poliigon hdri (and many others) is that they're basically trash, so you are forced to find 200 tricks to get a result that with a decent hdri u would get in a couple of click :/
@montemarcomagno32044 жыл бұрын
Also, the vray light dome should be used with a multiplier of 1, if you want a result that is consistent with the hdri. Obviously if the HDRI is not of quality, one value is worth the other😅
@ODSA4 жыл бұрын
Peter Guthrie HDRI are the best..
@montemarcomagno32044 жыл бұрын
Today there are many other valid shops for hdri, but I would recommend avoiding the poliigon ones, and all hdri that "seem wrong" when you put them in the scene. With a good and *correct* hdri you just have to adjust the exposure of the camera to properly light the scene.
@dubtube66914 жыл бұрын
There is not the perfect solution for your needs, it always depends on what you need in your scene. The intensity of the sun can easily painted in Photoshop for instance. If you need more control you can use the vray sun or any other light
@mohammadkhan67954 жыл бұрын
did you setup your camera setting first because its getting very exposed when i tried that same hdri its not getting the same result as yours did you used camera white balance or anything else i am coping all the steps but not getting the result i have also use exposure layer just like you aloso

@@ArchVizArtist The script works flawless, it does the same process. But the position of the sun gets locked by the transform link settings, this video showing the process is what i needed to handle the setup with more freedom, so far if i wanted to change hdri i deleted the whole thing 😂 so thanks so much for the video

Hi .... I have few problems with v-ray 5 (first when the render is finished and then I want to save the image, the image is saved with lower quality and all the adjustments I made in the light mix is undone. The image looks way better in the fram buffer and I can't get it as it is. Second the light layers that is saved with the elements for example ( the ies , sun .....) is very noisy I can't use them in the post production even if I need to bec the image becomes more and more noisy and low quality. Can you help me with this... thank you 😊

correct HDRI's don't need this very old method of light matchinng, this was needed like 10 years ago! correctly toned hdri maps are now environmentally adapted (professional ones at least), watch out what you purchase!
