I’ve applied this to my PS4 Pro especially for Ghost of Tsushima. I knew that I was using non optimal HDR settings for a long time. Directly noticed the improvements although I have a PC monitor (4K 32", VA panel and Basic HDR). Lightings are more realistic, interiors have a more balanced dark tone, fog is more visible… sunny landscapes are especially sharper than before. And fast transitions between dark and lighter environments are much better too. Many thanks 😊

you also have to check the in game settings, i know in red dead redemption 2 they have a stupid setting called cinematic mode in the HDR settings and you cannot lower the levels at all so it makes the game look dry and greyed out. HAHA i remember at launch it was terrible because it was the only setting but rockstar fixed it a week later and added a new setting called game setting or something where you can change the blacks and whites and paper whites whatever that is. it was a huge game changer since cinematic mode literally washed out all the colors and made the screen seem like it was losing brightness but it was really the game setting. most people kept HDR off until the patch was released to fix it.

IMPORTANT FOR LG C9 OR OLDER USERS: If you have LG C9 you have to set dynamic tone mapping to ‘HGiG’ and black level to ‘LOW’ (because it doesn’t have black level ‘auto’ like the CX) and set the RGB range on PS4/PS5 to ‘limited’. (If your tv supports black level ‘auto’ you should select that and also put the RGB range to ‘auto’ on your ps4/ps5.) You’re welcome. (The LG C9 should be in HDR mode to change the dynamic tone mapping) HDR summary: 1/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 2/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 3/3: set the logo to the darkest setting possible (if you’re in a pitch dark room, if you’re not in a pitch dark room and there’s some light in the room you can set it a little higher).

I’m using the Hisense U8H (mini-lcd/quantum dot. Just an amazing budget tv that I believe you can get before your flagship tv lines) and I can 100% agree with these settings. And I made sure to test it with an amazing game but with a broken HDR (Resident Evil Village) and it was the best when trying different (a little higher/lower than the first image that peeks/clips). If anyone finds this helpful with that tv, it’s 16 clicks up from the bottom for the first and second screen, then set the last all the way down as low as you can go. The best part about that TV’s game mode, it actually show what it’s running at on screen (nothing real in depth) but most importantly, it has where you can also control your whites and black if you want to get it REAL perfected. Thanks again for this.

Great video Vincent. Side note, it may be beneficial to get commentary from Sony as they may be applying an offset of +1 or -1 on the values input by the user to align with the original guidance from the HGIG group (I.e. they could have assumed the user would find it easier to set at “barely visible” and then notch it one more to the clipping point due to some case studies showing people went too far on average).
@christopherwright7077 Жыл бұрын
This. These recommendations are based on the assumption that the selected value is not "modified" compared to what you see in the calibration screen. I'd want confirmation as it is easy for placebo to make one think the slight adjustments are indeed better.

When you can’t see it anymore OR the last brightness level before you can’t see the sun logo) and for the third page for adjusting, use the very darkest option so that you have true blacks on your LED TV because OLED TV’s turn the pixels OFF individually when it comes to black colors. I’m constantly adjusting my picture accordingly to games, they also depict a difference so you gotta match all 3 to the best possible quality. The white point tone mapping granularity was really weird to see. I am still on the base PS4 and it ramps up the brightness much more gradually with every step compared to what the PS5 seems to be doing here. That, along with the non always on/always off nature of the HDR makes it seem like the PS4 had a much better implementation of HDR than the PS5.

These recommendations cause bright highlights to be clipped in Horizon Forbidden West, especially noticeable with highlights on stone under sunlight conditions, which blow out to extreme saturated yellow. Using the menus as the instructions actually say results in a much more correct looking picture.
@patrickroza30732 жыл бұрын
Interestingly there’s hdr sliders in the game. Does it still mean it’s using hgig? Also I was thinking the ps5 settings are a user friendly thing - they think it’s easier for the user to pick the barely visible item, instead of the just disappeared item? It may still adjust the actual picture accordingly
@AndyGilleand2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickroza3073 it's hard to say definitively because I noticed after I changed that my next scene was in sunset, and then it got sunny again and I did notice the same artifacts, but they did seem lessened. It's certainly possible to include sliders and still use HGIG though. HGIG only affects absolute black and white, it does not impact things like shadows, brightness, and highlights, which the sliders control. While true shadow and highlights sounds like it would control black and white points, that's not always necessarily the case, as theoretically you can have the correct black level but still raised shadows if the gradient from black to shadow is incorrect, and the same for highlights. Having experience with color grading I know there's a lot of control you can potentially have over the look of an image. I will be looking at it a little further. It's hard to say whether those settings are affecting absolute black and white, or simply grading within the limits set by the OS.

Bullcrap. Dragging to minimum is moving the PS5 black threshold below the black threshold of the TV. The TV black cannot get any darker. It just drags the dark greys towards black making the overall image too dark. That is not calibration.

If you use a Sony TV it will use transfer function to resolve higher brightness inputs than what the display is capable of. You can use the contrast slider in HDR10 mode to control this. With higher values it will clip earlier, with lower values it will resolve brighter details, but sacrifice average brightness. Basically it fits an input range of e.g. 5000 Nits into the display range of 1000 Nits. Imo it is worth experimenting with this though for games. You can also use this to get a more precise peak brightness cut-off in the PS5 HDR calibration. Basically you can roughly set it up on the PS5 and then use TV contrast to match maximum resolved brightness to what the PS5 outputs.
