Agree the biggest difference compared to streaming is sound now. But that difference is huge with a good sound system. There is no chance in hell that the lack of dolby vision on some disc will make me stream the dolby vision version with the current sound limitations still there. It is sad that we can't have the best of both.

I find that regular 1080p Blu Ray often looks better than 4k streaming services. It usually has a higher bitrate (less compression). It's a mistake to think of the resolution as being a measure of quality. When you encode video, quality and res are two different settings. Quality is related to compression which is why 2k DCi theater files are more detailed than UHD Blu Ray. Higher res just means you can sit closer before seeing pixels.

I'm right there with you. I toss most 2160p webrips if I get my hands on the 1080p bluray. Audio is always the big winner, but visually the higher bitrate always seems to win out over the 2160p webrips hdr10 or DV.

1080 Blu-ray are encoded using AVC and 4K streams are HEVC. HEVC is twice as efficient so a bitrates of 1080 discs are half of the equivalent 4k. In terms of streaming a 20mbps 4k streams is equivalent of a 40mbps 1080 disc. So bitrate wise both have the same mbps.

The compression artifacts of the 1080p streaming era that we merely noticeable at the time, are really quite distracting today since "Viewing distance" (more likely viewing angle) has improved. My Blu-rays, on the other hand, have held up quite nicely. I suspect the same will be the case with "4K" streaming even is some 4K Blu-rays don't have Dolby Vision. Even at my current viewing angle, I find compression artifacts more distracting than some titles' lack of Dolby Vision.

Great review. There is one detail that I find rather noticeable which didn't receive attention. When looking at a single frame in the HDR10 footage when there are moving objects on the right TV, there is very noticeable ghosting. This can be seen in multiple scenes, but is present ONLY in the HDR10 content. Examples: 9:34 - when Capn is walking 9:42 - when the Hulk (human form) is turning around 9:45 - when hulk is changing This is a very big difference in my opinion giving a huge advantage to Dolby vision on anything containing even medium level of movement. Is that because of the codecs or the screen settings?

Great video Vincent. I was surprised by the conclusion but agree with you 100%. I just love the convenience of streaming. I built up an expensive library of DVDs when that format came out and as I travelled and moved houses, it was a pain to ship. I bought a Sony X900H a few months ago and the built in apps are just great at displaying content in Dolby Vision. Formula 1: Drive to Survive has some amazing shots in Dolby Vision for example. Where Blu Rays might have a slight advantage is audio (with other audio formats supported) - but more and more streaming is being delivered with Dolby Atmos. I must calibrate my TV - still using the out of the box settings.
@adriannn3720

4K Blu-Rays are drastically better with movies shot on film that have digital noise, as the lower bitrate on the stream causes loss of detail in grain scenes. And if you find streaming more convenient, you can always just rip your discs to a hardrive, and then put the disc in your garage or something. Works the same, but you are getting superior quality.
@itsyaboytho

Atmos audio bitrates on streaming services tend to be around the 768Kbps. This is lossy compression - meaning loss of quality versus the studio master. Discs that include Atmos tracks are the lossless version with no loss of quality versus the studio master. The bitrates tend to be in the 3000+ (I regularly see discs with 7000+ Kbps atmos tracks) Kbps range. This difference is hugely noticeable with the proper audio equipment to play and hear such things. The audio experience of a good quality audio track makes just as much difference as beautiful imagery and colors. Unfortunately, it tends to be the biggest afterthought to most consumers when it comes to home media.

Came across this comparison video while researching 4K Blu-Ray players. Its a really good video. I like in how much detail you go comparing streaming services and a physical players. I do appreciate how much work you put in to make video like this. If Disney + had all the films I like, I wouldn't even think about getting a 4K player. Unfortunately I am not a big fan of Marvel movies and movies like Hobbit, Martian, Mad Max, Sicario, Blade Runner, etc. is not available on Disney +. Getting several monthly subscriptions (Amazon, Disney, Netflix) just so you could enjoy your favorite movies will eventually cost you more than a physical 4K Blu Ray disc. And it is so nice to have those movies right there on the shelve.

@@AndyGilleand The Fury Road fire, specifically in the 4k bluray goes from a deep dark red to a washed out orange. The red parts are substantially more saturated than the rest of the scene and it's actually jarring how bad they look as they don't match the rest of the color grade at all. Plenty of the Amazon reviews of the disk agree with me and it seems like a clear mistake in the color grading process. I don't recall finding the reds offensive when I watched the movie in theaters and I have like every version of the movie on Blu-ray. The Fury Road UHD bluray version is a fluke in its poor quality, though the rest of the HDR treatment looks fine.

@@thatcherfreeman A lot of people who don't understand what fire should actually look like agree with you. That's what fire actually looks like in real life. We're just all conditioned to seeing it blown out because of limited dynamic range, that this feels strange to see on screen. This is HDR actually doing what it was designed to do, and doing it really well. Theaters are not HDR.
@thatcherfreeman
@thatcherfreeman 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyGilleand Movies have an artificial color grade in post, just like now the night scenes in Fury Road are blue instead of being a realistic night time color. As a result, the objective is for the fire to look plausible in the context of the rest of the color grade, not for the fire to be the only "realistic" looking element in a world that's unrealistically entirely orange and blue, if that means breaking the overall look of the color grade. In any case, most people probably found the reds in that release distracting and therefore found that this color grading choice distracted from the rest of the image. In my opinion, it made the flames look like a low quality vfx job that didn't match the backplate, and therefore reduced the believability of the image compared to the SDR releases.

Sometimes you've just got to enjoy content The brilliance in detail in this review is undeniable, and I don't doubt a word of it, and from someone who loves tech, Vincent truly is the best around at critiquing (keep up the amazing work btw, I can't believe a major TV brand isn't chasing you for a techie roll) But if you enjoy the movie or show, the mere details of the disc, stream, DV or HDR10 codec won't be (and shouldn't be) worrying you. The fact is, what is being talked about here has got nothing to do with the experience. It's purely something video enthusiasts ponder over (and disagree over from time to time). What I like about Vincent is he's very fair and very balanced on this. You will notice this video is not trying to say one is bad, one is great. This is about the science and art of calibration. If you do worry about this, you'll always be worried theres a better experience out there. Thats true for over 99.99 % plus of the world, so you likely can't win that conundrum

Hey Vincent! I wonder if there was a way that you could do a comparison between Dolby Vision vs. HDR 10 with LG's DTM set to "On" but not pausing the movie? I have noticed that when pausing a movie, DTM shows a good difference vs Dolby Vision. However, if you let the movie roll and not pause scenes, I have noticed DTM is not as drastic and is very close to what Dolby Vision offers. The best way to see this is on Thor Ragnorok Chapter 16 when Valkyrie comes into the battle with fireworks. When pausing, the fireworks go from bright to dim thanks to DTM (but it's paused). Yet when playing the scene normally (no pause), the fireworks look bright and normal. To me, I feel like pausing movies inaccurately shows what DTM really does to the picture. Just a thought!

Here is another suggestion for a video you could do: Which streaming service has the best audio. My experience is that AppleTV has the best sound by far. I am not sure if AppleTV allocates more bandwidth for audio or if they make sure to choose sounds that will give the illusion of better sound. The positive quality that drew my attention to AppleTV sound is that often the decay of chords and notes into silence is always so extended and lucid and full of satisfying aural details. My vote is for a comparison between an OLED with your player of choice (Oppo?) running DV... and a bright QLED (Neo?) with a Panny outputting HDR10 using HDR Optimizer. In my mind, this is a real-world choice for those with bright rooms and concerns of progressive burn-in... who also require a fairly wide viewing angle... but also prefer good HDR and accuracy. Note: I've seen your DV comparison between a Q90R and an LG OLED where the OLED won the HDR battle, despite the added brightness of the Q90R. So I'm wondering how much HDR Optimizer will help on the high nit material. But things may change once you've gotten your hands on a Neo QLED anyway.

Please correct me if I am wrong. We can see the superiority of Dolby Vision when applying high brightness that depends on our device capability. While in the case of watching with low brightness or device with limited brightness capability, HDR comes to our aid.

For me hdr or dolby vision doesnt matter as both pop on my oled anyway the only dealbreaker for me is the difference between dolby digital plus vs dolby true HD and dts X and atmos. Big reason for me to still watch 4k blurays. You can even tell the difference on audio clarity ir crisp sounds even on soundbar

Interestingly enough I did a similar comparison between Pirates of the Caribbean using Disney+ 4k Vision and my 1080p non-HDR blu-ray. The colour tones were very different and I found myself liking the blu ray version more so than the vision version, the image felt clearer as well ironically. I was expecting to like the HDR version more at least in terms of colour tone, although I suppose Vision is closer to artistic intent.

The HDR version at least removes the film crew member that was accidentally left in frame at the very end of the movie.

I have over 200 movies on Apple TV but for certain box sets, LOTR etc I bought the 4k discs. The sound quality, especially atmos is considerably better on disc.

I just picked up the Panasonic ub820 because I've been using my ps5 for 4k blu rays on my CX and it looked good but I wanted to be able to fully enjoy my new tv, I tried other players with DV but they weren't good enough to compete with the the ps5 hdr10 but the ub820 processor is incredible and actually shows the difference between hdr10 and DV. It's kind of pricey compared to other players but it's worth every penny.

A pity we cannot get the best of both worlds.. Would like to see some DV vs hdr10+ vs hdr10 comparison if possible. And is the dynamic tonemapping feature on TVs to be off then? Or the quality/implementation differs on each TV? There were always claims of how they should improve image quality by analysing each frame/scene and adapt accordingly to give the same sort of improvement for static metadata hdr that dynamic metadata give, that is they realtime generate these dynamic metadata in a way to speak . I understand they can never match up to studio mastered dynamic metadata quality, but the way it is phrased in this video, it seems turning it ON for hdr10 content give it a worse image than OFF?

Amazing how good online streaming actually is those days, native disc is still better, but not by much.

Just like MP3 was never as good as CD audio, it's good enough that disc media pretty much is dead. Not to mention most people don't own a TV that's capable of showing off a good 4k Blu-Ray. Streaming seems to be good enough quality for most displays, with compression techniques getting better every few years, and easily upgradable in the client software.

It depends on how sensitive you are to streaming compression artifacts. They're unbearable on certain shows or movies, even with fast connections.

Teoh is shilling too much for Disney. Netflix has better bit rate and their movies have less artifacts like posteriazation and blocking.. Disney is just subpar.

Personally, I'd rather take a pristine HDR10 image than a artefact-riddled Dolby Vision one. The Dynamic Tone Mapping on my LG OLED does enough for me that I'm not mad about missing out on the dynamic metadata of DV. Maybe this is because I'm so close to my 55" and a pixel peeper. But the compression artefacts combined with the woefully compressed audio have me choosing the HDR10 Blu-rays.

Awesome comparison; no way to do it right besides side by side as you do. This was a question I’ve always thought about myself. Given that there are advantages for both, streaming still wins out for me personally in terms of price and convenience. I grab DV movies on iTunes usually for

I know this is an old video, but I'm confused in to why you didn't mention HDR+ over HDR10 Content. When HDR+ is turned on, on Samsung TVs it actually gives you even more detail, more highlight details in bright and darker scenes. It also allows you to use Bit.2020 over HDR10 Content, which looks on par with Dolby Vision after proper calibration. HDR10 calibration won't be the same calibration for HDR+.
