HDVS Business Applications [North America Ver.] (1992 Analog HDTV 1080i HDVS Video Demo Disc)

This is "HDVS Business Applications (North America Version)" (HDP-2078) from a Sony-made high-definition 12" HDVS videodisc. The HDVS disc format was designed to be a highly portable 12" laserdisc-derived media format for Sony's "High-Definition Video System" or "Hi-Vision" back in the early 1990's! Back then, high definition was a little different from how it is now. It was analog (not digital) & close to but slightly different in resolution to the 1080i picture we receive over the air today as it was technically 1125i/1035i. Before the earliest high-definition media was available to the public (via satellite, MUSE Laserdisc, & W-VHS tapes), Sony and other companies began shooting footage, doing research, and, showing public displays of high-definition television. There were three main ways of storing HDTV (or HDVS) at that time: Reel-to-reel tape (HDV-1000), cartridge tape (HDV-10 "UniHi"), & 12" Laserdisc-style discs (HDL-5800 / HDL-2000). This footage came from one of the Laserdisc-style discs.
These HDVS discs could only hold a maximum of 15 minutes of video (on CLV discs, even less on CAV discs)...but it held uncompressed, raw high-definition component video! Take that, Blu-Ray!
"HDVS Business Applications" appears to be a disc meant for public sales and/or tradeshow demonstrations regarding the potential business uses of the HDTV, specifically Sony's HDVS line of equipment. The video demonstrates how HDTV & the HDVS system is as radical a change to presentations and sales as TV was back in the 1950's. We then learn how the HDVS system can be used for just about anything, from board meetings to auctions to cosmetics to restaurants! In between the unique footage full of 1990's styles (aviator glasses and shoulder pads, anyone?), this video features a number of segments from other Sony HDVS productions, such as "Paris," "A Dolphin Story," "Emile Gallé," and footage shot by BMW.

Fantastic piece of Sony history! Darker areas seem to be crushed to black, and color saturation seems a bit high. Is this just how the disc was recorded?

I remember when we where shooting this in 2013. It took a lot of care and money to get everything to look as authentic as possible. We used a lot of prosthetic makeup on all the actors. I remember there was a big discussion in the team, about how realistic the VFX portrayed at 5:21 was supposed to be, because they didn't want to break the illusion, but also didn't wanna make it look stupid. They shut that whole office building at the beginning down and redressed it, to look like that. Had to hide all the modern cars in the background for the outside scenes and all the city footage of Paris was stock, that we tried to upscale and match with the rest of the footage. I think we kind of succeeded, because no one ever noticed. That's the weird uncle of the director at 4:51 btw.

I appreciate these very much! However, you may want to check your recording levels next time, as the blacks are clearly crushed in this presentation. In Japan, they used a black level of 0 IRE, unlike the 7.5 IRE used in North America. I'm guessing you captured assuming 7.5 IRE, which explains why the blacks are crushed.
