Lower bandwidth doesn’t make a huge difference with absorption/water/trees and stuff… but it is much more noticeable with interference/a bunch of people all up at the same time in reflective environments. It’s super fun having over a dozen people all up using the extra frequencies and lower bandwidth that both HDZero and Avatar began to employ. Super, super fun! 100% recommend trying it!

Nice, great info. It wasn’t until I was really reviewing & editing this footage that I came to the conclusion that the RF signals are just blocked in this situation so low bandwidth won’t really help much. I never fly with other pilots because I live in the middle of nowhere… but that sounds awesome! I will definitely do a quick range test follow up in all modes to see if there’s any differences there. Thanks for watching and providing feedback, cheers!

Hmm, I disagree. All things being equal lowering the bandwidth requirements of a communication channel should help with range because it's not just the fading on its own that causes a loss of signal fidelity at the receiver, but rather the signal getting below the noise floor, i.e. Shannon's law tells us bandwidth is a function of the signal to noise ratio. I suspect the issue is 540p90 (~46mbps uncompressed) has similar bandwidth requirements to 1080p30 (~62mpbs uncompressed) and might result in the same bitrate after spatial compression is applied (yes HDZero likely does spatial video compression using DCTs). Because while the 540p is quarter the resolution, 90 fps frame rate is 3 times higher. If they had a 540p60 mode it could definitely be made to have more range because in digital communication systems forward error correction allows engineers to make a tradeoff between throughput and resilience by encoding redundancies into the data stream.

@kandredfpv super in-depth technical reply, and I appreciate you sharing knowledge, but to your last point, there is a 540p60 mode and that’s what I was testing here. If I misunderstood please let me know. Cheers!

@@kandredfpv we are saying the same thing. I just didn’t do a good job simplifying my language portraying the 720p60 vs 540p60 comparison data. If you want some general numbers… 540p60 is approximately 10% better in open air (not worth it), 5% better in absorption (not worth it), but where it really shines is in a raised noise floor as I mention… where it’s over 50% better. I’ll be testing all the systems in a low humidity environment at night in 4 months… this I’m curious about… as my normal environment is quite humid as I currently live in a rainforest on the ocean. The 540p60 will likely do better in these conditions.

heh...I imagine days and days of testing and a lot of work editing for just 2min video. But I guess that's how it is 😂
@GiantAntCowboy6 ай бұрын
@Ja-Ko exactly, a lot of work for a short “oddly specific” topic… but all my testing starts with my own curiosity. Additionally I was testing my ELRS control links here for a Gemini test video a few months ago, so that’s good.

I don't even fly HDZ and I still enjoyed this video and testing! Always top notch. Thank you for what you do for long range! Wouldn't be mad if you did some walksnail stuff 😂

Thanks, this is a pretty “niche” topic… so that’s for watching. I’ll pull together a comparison of Analog, HDZ, WS, & DJI for next time. Thanks for watching, cheers!

Really good assessment. I"m so tired of these KZbinrs saying you the latency this and latency that... You summed it so well. If you're a racer your requirements are ALOT different from a mountain surfer/long range quad. There is no "best" setting since you're not using the recording like in the O3 air units. Great video man.
@GiantAntCowboy5 ай бұрын
Thanks man, appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts. My favorite thing with regard to Latency & HDZero is the Fixed Latency. I just feels consistent and I know what I’m seeing is Live View. With DJI/Walksnail those little freezes can be uncomfortable and make me nervous in risky situations, like “Ah, is the image about to freeze & go blank?!” But it’s all pro & cons, I’ve been enjoying the my new O3 setup, in fact I’m going out to test a Pavo35 with an O3 unit in a few minutes!

Great review as always, thanks! If it's possible, could you please make another test with antennas from other brands? I mean, probably everyone buys these Truerc antenna kits, but maybe you can find something better and not that big as your copper crown)

Thanks, unfortunately the helicals work so well, and they are so cheap, that I have a hard time justifying the purchase of expensive antennas… However I’ll be doing a some more range/antenna tests soon, cheers!

I have see better penetration in some area with 540p60. But in other area there's no difference. The most interesting mode are the 1080p, i use it for extra light. For example at dusk, it make a great difference.
@GiantAntCowboy5 ай бұрын
Yes, I think it very situational and in this situation it wasn’t significant. However regarding I agree highlights with the 1080p30 look much brighter and sharper.

Awesome testing thank you man! In my garden I stick to 60p (dont have a 90fps cam), else it's much too sketchy 😄

Just fyi, what you found is more or less in line with what Ryan Quellet published months ago. Your results are a bit more convincing given the number of repeats... ;)
@GiantAntCowboy5 ай бұрын
Yea, seems to be the case unfortunately, maybe range will be slightly better, not sure, I’ll do a quick test soon. But the image resolution loss isn’t worth it for me honestly, I feel the same about 90fps, the gain doesn’t outweigh the loss. Different modes for different people and uses though! Appreciate you watching and commenting cheers!

Interesting results. Over the past couple of months, I have switched back to 720p60 from 1080p30. I can definitely say, I have much better video penetration using 720 over 1080. Your results I don't notice it as much, though. Maybe it's the type of obstacles, or the antennas your using that is mitigating the differences more?
@GiantAntCowboy5 ай бұрын
Yea, i analyzed these videos a lot and 1080p30 is the worst in that it has more full (near full) rainbows. The other modes were extremely similar with 540p60 maybe having a slight advantage. I think maybe the test is simply too hard… meaning that 5.8ghz just can’t penetrate the forest so the mode doesn’t matter. I’ve pushed WalkSnail & most recently DJI through here as well and they all basically fail at the end. Those other systems are much scarier (imo) because of the delay and chance of a complete disconnect situation. Almost didn’t share this test because of the inconclusive results, but filmed it all and figured why not. “It is what it is.”
@travisburchell6 ай бұрын
I do feel like I see a slight difference on the range/pen test, but minor. Likely less than a 10% difference from 540 to 1080. Definitely nice having the options though depending on where/how you are flying. Just glad you didn’t lose a quad in this one! 😂
@GiantAntCowboy6 ай бұрын
Yea, it does seem to hold more image pixels for longer, especially compared to the 1080p, but it’s not a huge or obvious difference. I think in this situation the 5.8ghz RF Waves are just being completely blocked by the trees, and so there’s only so much the system can do. I’m gonna try a few range test comparisons to see if there’s a difference when LOS is clear. I can’t lose any more quads… getting too expensive. 😅

Yea, I hoped for a better result, but honestly it’s still 5.8ghz, and the RF waves are being blocked by trees, so I guess it makes sense… I’ll do a quick range comparison next which might yield better results from the smaller bandwidth. Thanks for watching

I tried the 1080p 30 on my freestyle quad with a stubby antenna and I couldn't go behind one tree line. Massive degradation in performance.
@GiantAntCowboy5 ай бұрын
I haven’t noticed such a big difference. For my though when it breaks up it tends to me larger flashes. I think it’s because it’s only 30fps so the breakup get concentrated more in a single frame. (Just a theory)
