I checked out some reactions to this music video. What struck me and moved me deeply was the number of people who apparently had to grow up under comparable circumstances. Uncounted and untold traumas triggered by watching this story. My heart tightens at the thought.

I like to interprut this song as the daughter learning that there was good times with the bad and that those memories that she had forgotten inspires her to connect with her mom again. Instead of the scenario where she only is pretending or dreaming up the good times she just remembered the truth that she had forgotten.

I think that when she was fighting and when she looked in the mirror she remembered her mom and some birthdays. And she remembered making a wish for good times as a kid and all of the good came flooding back and so she went to see her mom.

It's "But I can't keep on" that flips it to a happy song. It the HOPE for change To me the video was always from the perspective of the girl when she is older, the shots of her younger self are her remembering things. That's why all you see are the same mirrored behaviors she's exhibiting for the first two verses she's literally acting out that generational trauma However when NF sneaks in that "But..." before the chorus the memories shift and we see there WAS happy moments in her past, with her mom, it doesn't negate the bad things that happened but it allows her to let go of her resentment towards her mom who she probably blamed whole sale for her current state. Her driving to her moms is not a dream its her probably reaching out for the first time in probably years. The implications being that her mom is a flawed human just like her and deserves forgiveness just like she deserves forgiveness for her mistakes.

Thank you for that! Yes, I understood the very end, being that she is reaching out to her mother... but I wasn't sure about the whole birthday wish... and how things changed after she blew out the candles. Such a great song.

It’s cuz it wasn’t a wish.. it’s just after she blew out the candles the video switched to her good memories with her mom instead of all the bad ones

Ive watched a lot of different reactions to see how close my idea of the video was to others. My interpretation of the very end is it looks to me like her mom found a way to turn her life around. So when the girl hits rock bottom she puts her pride aside and asks for help. Who better to help her than her mom who will always love her and has won the battle herself
@MrsRealistic Жыл бұрын

So happy is a prayer to God explaining that he can’t help but dwell on the negatives just as the little girl did after she was grown. Always haunted by all the bad. But it wasn’t until she reached out to God when her mindset changed she started remembering all the good that went on in her childhood. Which is why she’s crying because she’s overwhelmed by all the memories that she could’ve been holding close instead the bad taking over and causing a distance between her and her mom. Which is why she then drives to her mom pretty much to make amends and be in her life again instead of holding on to the anger. It symbolizes what NF would have done differently had his mom not passed because he didn’t get the luxury to tell him mom he forgives her before she died

I think the first part is where she focused on the bad part of her past which torments her and in the second part she remembers the happy times and they involved her mother so she ran to her mother to be happy again.

It wasn’t a wish or a dream… most the video she was thinking of her bad times… then towards the end she started thinking about some of the good thoughts/memories she remembered of her mother and then she went to visit her (I think)

I wish he didn't make a video for this one.... most reactions I've seen are completely around the video...like those are actors, these are NFs words and whatnot...like just feel like the song is not being appreciated enough, especially people that are a bit slow and spend half the video wondering if is the girl grown up lol and don't listen like at all, at least you got the vision of the visuals right off the bat, but yeah just think an incredibly deep and powerful song and abunch of people are so worried about the actors and such that the song gets like glossed over a bit, especially for some men that don't relate to the girl or like said a bit slow on video, or people that just try finding hidden meanings because his other videos or whatever... just not a big fan of a lot of the reactions I've seen, and mainly just about the video...like yeah get symbolism and all that but the song itself....like it's incredible...
@MrsRealistic Жыл бұрын
I liked the combo. I could hear his own story being told, while seeing the visuals in this song. I guess it depends on the song, but you're right, sometimes having no video forces a person to just HEAR the meaning.

I totally agree. The video and the meaning of the song don't line up although both are very impacting
@finnestadj Жыл бұрын
The best part about the music video that you would not get from just listening to the song is the element of hope and personal choice that is illustrated at the end. The little girl chooses to be happy and the older self goes to make an amends with her mother, which is often times the source of unhappiness. Holding onto resentment causes us to not be happy, forgiveness is often the beginning of the healing process.
@MrsRealistic Жыл бұрын
@@finnestadj Thank you for that. It's neat to see how other people process the song and video!

I too think the birthday party was that little girl's dream. Otherwise, she would not have sung the lyrics "If I was happy" in that scene. My mother was not neglectful or violent, but she was very nervous and would get angry if the family did not keep the room clean. So the sound of the vacuum cleaner is still traumatic for me. Because my mother was definitely grumpy when she was using the vacuum cleaner. I still have my mother's gruff voice in the back of my ears along with the sound of the vacuum cleaner, she passed away 5 years ago, but I had a dream about her last year. She was angry while using the vacuum cleaner. Then I jumped out of bed, nervous. It's been 50 years of memories and I still can't get out of it. But I think I was much happier than a child who was subjected to domestic violence. And yet, I have such trauma. And it saddens me to imagine how much trauma the children who have been subjected to domestic violence must be carrying in their hearts.

It sounds like your mother maybe had OCD. I know a woman like this, (which she fully admits)...she's neurotic about how clean her house, yard and car is. She has two boys and I'm sure it affects them. And you're right, it's too common that there are situations in which children are neglected and abused and I silently cry for those poor children who have to go through that. God bless you 🙏

When they were singing happy birthday she was looking around at the happy kids and their parents; She blows out the candles and what follows was what she wished for, for a mother who was there for her.
