I bought a 1946 Ercoupe in 1970. I soloed it a week later and had my license in about six weeks. Much of the $2000 I spent for the money I spent for the plane would have been spent on a rental, which was $20 per hour back then. Of course I had to buy my own 80 octane fuel for around a dollar a gallon, so that's an extra $4 an hour. Well worth it.

"Soylent Green" was a movie from 1973. Earth had run out of food, and this great new product came out. Turned out "Soylent Green" was "people" - what a horrible marketing idea. This is what happens when folks forget history, or don't research a name. Maybe it's a good product? Sorry Trent. I'll never know.

They named it that as a joke, but it's worked out good for them. They grew from nothing very fast. Honestly name recognition has done more for them than it has hurt them. Remember, humans kinda run off name recognition to a degree, same reason the same idiots get elected over and over when we all hate em. The people who know the joke will buy it to be like "yaaaaah I'm eating peeeeepool" and people who don't, realistically, probably wouldn't have bought it anyway.

Stol plane should be relatively low cost to ensure because it doesn't go fast enough or weigh enough to destroy things and I assume the big wing is harder to stall and can do the impossible turn with relative ease? why no low wing stol planes? I'd think that getting the wing deep in ground effect is better. Bit of aerodynamics might not be bad either. And do the wheel really need to be that big? do you ever land on 15cm (6") boulders? airless tires might be great for aviation because we don't need a great ride. Planes spend so little time rolling. And ruling puncture out has to be peace of mind.
@danielsmith67829 ай бұрын
I'm going to assume you are being sarcastic or trolling and not just making a statement that dumb.
@trustyaeronaut9 ай бұрын
Most Stol planes are taildraggers which are more difficult to handle on the ground leading to more accidents than your typical nose-draggers, they are also often landing off airport on unknown surfaces which is riskier leading to higher insurance rates. High wings are usually preferred off airport since the wings can clear brush and other stuff that a low wing might hit. The wheels probably don't need to be that big for the majority of the off airport sites, but someone always has to land first at a "new" spot and it's hard to really tell how rough a spot will be until you land...hence the desire for massive tires. And the ride inside is quite a bit bumpier than it l looks like, you want all the suspension you can get and the air in those big tires helps a lot.
@DanFrederiksen9 ай бұрын
@@danielsmith6782 A wise man in a Steven Seagal movie once said assumption is the mother of all fuckups.
@DanFrederiksen9 ай бұрын
@@trustyaeronaut I get you can land in a narrow track with a high wing but how often is that done in reality with obstacles taller than your gear. I was thinking a narrower square profile airless tire with very little hub such that a much smaller wheel has similar give and tread. A smaller wheel could be in some kind of wheel pants and be much less drag. To combine STOL with travel capability. I don't hear many stol plane accidents but maybe you guys do a lot of non fatal ones? tipping over and stuff. STOL insurance could have a high deductible so you pay for your own mistakes unless the plane is totalled or you wreck a building or other planes. I think the low speed and stall difficulty keeps you out of a lot of trouble. whereas bonanzas are dying left and right
@trustyaeronaut9 ай бұрын
@@DanFrederiksen Ahh, it's more than just landing, taxing around and parking and stuff is all easier with a high wing and the visibility below is much better. A stol machine that can travel at a decent speed is the dream! haha. But, like most things, it's easy to build something that is good at one thing, but making something that is good at multiple things is a bit more challenging. I think usually the allure of landing somewhere new and unique outweighs the desire to get there quicker. As far as accident ratios, I suspect a lot more guys are bending props out in the bush than dying in Bonanzas, but I don't feel like looking up the data :)
