@@xbemos I used to run chickens under hanging rabbit pens.The chickens would clean up anything the rabbits dropped, add their own poop, and mix it all up. Made the best garden fertilizer and I could put it straight out onto the beds. Best garden ever for that two years.

The cat has deemed Ben worthy of his protection. He was guarding you when you were planting. He sees how you work the land and respect your animals so in his book you are an OK dude. We have a feral community that we got fixed and have taken care of for many years. They are fascinating creatures. They see everything. When we sit on the front porch at night they surround us on the steps and the fence rail, watching in every direction, protecting us. But don't discount the fierceness of a feral or a barn cat, they will take out birds, rats, squirrels in a heartbeat. They earn their keep. @@akindofmagick That boy is worth his weight in gold. Voles are a difficult prey, and an onion disaster when they start reproducing. Nothing like seeing all your vegetable tops laying over wilting on the soil to find out they all have no bottoms. Bulbs, roots, everything gone. Hard to catch an exit hole from those under ground tiny tunnels. Plus they can climb like mice!

Dormant planting only applies with bare root. Yours are actively growing in containers so should be no problem if they are planted now are watered well for the season.

Don't forget to use your herbaceous and groundcover plants to manage the grass! Things like rhubarb and asparagus, creeping thyme, purslane, turkish rocket work alongside the comfrey and provide loads of benefits to your food forest and to you ;) Getting some walking onions going in there can't hurt either, and can help some with pests.

I’m so sad that comfrey is black listed in my country. It can help fruits trees and berry bushes out so much ,with making nutrients available . Not to forget the salves and tinctures that one can make from it. Lupins are also black listed. They are great for binding nitrogen, they are also one of my favorite decorative flower, but I see why it’s black listed. They are in every ditch and along every road almost all over the country . They kill the native plants , that of course are very important to sustain native wildlife. It’s still sad that I can’t have them in my flower area.

And once they're established and producing massive amts if berries, imagine all the canning, freezing, freeze drying, on top of fresh berries to eat everyday during season!!!!!!! I'm so proud of your veggies, fruit trees, and berries you're growing!!! Looking back to your backyard garden in California, you guys now have the ability to supply your whole family year round from you're sweet farm...your own milk cow to keep you in milk, butter, yogurt, cheese, a whole beef soon to go in your freezer, pork in your freezer, chickens in your freezer, eggs year round, and a great variety of vegetables to store year round!!! I'm very proud and excited you've accomplished so much no longer than you've lived there!🥰

Do the birds eat your blueberry? I planted once, and birds ate them all, the next year the blueberries died.

@@HappyElephant No. They normally eat my strawberries and blackberries. But if birds eat your blueberries, I'm not sure that's connected to them dying. My neighbor has problems with birds but she puts t posts around the blueberry patch, and when they're almost ripe, she'll put bird netting over them to protect them until she's done picking them.

Awesome love Blueberries. Depending on where you live, I used to make a deal with our local nursery for perennials usually the smaller ones and ended up with 6 flower gardens. We also had blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and grapes, yes and 10 different fruit trees. Only problem processing not just the veggies, but the fruit as well 😜, nice, but alot of work. May your harvest be plenty. Blessings to you all. 😊🇺🇲

My beloved grandmother was our MiMi…. She would’ve been 120 years old this year. We miss her terribly, even now. She was the heart and soul of our family. Your orchard is looking SO good! Your trees are lush and happy. I will probably be copying your (Billy’s) permaculture model for ours. Our orchard is coming along here in SW Missouri, but it is only a year old, so still has a ways to go.. we just moved to our forever farm last year and have been running full speed ahead, getting in pasture divisions, getting some shade and wildlife beneficial trees planted in our open pastures, deciding what will remain a hay field and seeing what it needs for optimal production, planting our orchard, getting a garden going, getting a small beef herd and our chickens…. Hard work, yes,… but so rewarding!

just make sure the blueberry plants get enough sun... each day... full sun at least eight hours a day. Blueberries will tolerate soils with pH from 3.8 to 5.5, but prefer a soil pH closer to 4.5, which will require the addition of elemental sulfur to lower the pH in most areas.... Watch out for squirrels !! they love blueberries and the leaves !!!

So awesome to have 66!! My sister has a u-pick blueberry farm, and recommended to me (also planting blueberries) to pick off blossoms the first year so that it encourages good root growth. She also grows hers on hugel beds so you don’t break your back bending over to pick berries.

It never hurts to ask! It might cost a little more than you want, but it is well worth it in the long run. I have blackberry, blueberry and strawberry. This year I added elderberry and a grape. I have one grape, planted two more. but sadly only one is growing. You are correct, there is never enough wood chips, or compost. God bless your family and keep growing.

Baby bees love blueberry plants!!! My mother-in-law would keep a netting over them so they couldn't get in. She would take the netting off one blueberry plant at a time when she picked the some that was ready. Then covered back up and take off the next one and so forth with the other eight trees.

When I purchased blueberry plants about 9 years ago, the owner of the nursery said use fine pine mulch and mix in with the soil. Blueberries like the soil where pine trees grow. We also laid cardboard down to help control the weeds. That section is pine mulched also. If the leaves turn red and it is not during the fall...that means your plants are stressed.

The mulch around the trees is great, but keep the mulch away from the base of the tree trunk itself. You can suffocate them if you bury the base. I have experience with this, unfortunately.

It looks to be ground stumps of tree trunks (solid wood), not woodchips you’re putting down on the fruit trees. If so, woodchips (w/ branches & leaves chipped) work MUCH better & will not pull nitrogen from the tree. Am curious to know how it turns out (wood only). Nice work!

Ben I have 8 blueberry bushes n I have more than I can eat, so can u imagine how much u will have. Plan on selling a ton of blueberries, they do take a lot of nitrogen, mine are big as quarters, I have four mounds of strawberries too, seems like every year I end up with a new mound, lol💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

I live in Florida and planted my Turmeric rhizome's out in Mid February that I got from Honey Tree Farms, it is just now within the past 2 weeks that I am seeing shoots emerging from the ground, so be patient, I guess it takes a while for them to come up!

My turmeric also doesn't come up until the heat really gets going in the evenings. So further south from them, in SC, mine are just now throwing up their tips. If we had them in ground and mulched, would probably be even longer. The ginger is about a week behind the turmeric each year.

Hey guys, We’re down around the piedmont and the advise I would give you is to check and adjust the PH in the soil for blueberries. This Carolina clay tends to run a little higher than they like. Good luck.

Coffee grounds do not acidify. You must amend with sulfur yearly if your soil isn’t right.

I add phosphorus also but I see wonderful results from coffee grounds. So since you are telling me otherwise I will say ok. But I will continue to RECYCLE my grounds.

Wonderfull! I would think about growing rhubarb in the under story, when harvesting (it's one of the first crops in spring) the leaves, which are huge, can also be left/used as mulch. Needs to be planted in super rich compost. They love the spring rains.

I think as long as the blueberries are in pots, they will plant just fine. But, I have heard that they do not like calcium, but want acidic earth.. so that is something to be aware of if they are planted among plants that wants calcium... but I`m sure you have got it covered. Hope you get wonderful harvests in years to come!

Ben, My Blueberry production has increased greatly by this one free trick. Bberries need acidic soil. Its a old wives tale that pine needles or coffee grounds will help. Minimal acidity in brown pine needles. Coffee grounds leach the acid into the COFFEE ITSELF. They are good for a nitrogen source, but make sure they dont create a hard crust around the plants. We spend every winter saving left over cold coffee and water it down to half strength. We water them several times over winter and have great production from 5 plants.

I knew a woman several years ago that started blueberry bushes. She continually care for them until they were tree size..6ft. She trimmed underneath them so when picking time came you could walk under and pick as well as from the top. Crazy, huge sweet blueberries. I'll never forget her giant orchard!

Three things. Remember to keep your alleys such that you can run animals through. Where are your nuts(?) usual pattern in two fruit to one nut as canopy. Take that pesto and mix with two parts ricotta and make ravioli, tortellini, filled shells. And that is last layer is vines and mushrooms. Check out parkrose permaculture in Portland. Roughly the same climate but with colder springs. Just as wet and similar hardiness zone.

I love the idea of your orchard! I’ve begun to work on something similar. Make sure you protect your blueberry bushes from rabbits! They love eating them to a nub. They get through my garden fencing. I’m thinking hardware cloth next.

Its wonderful that you got ALL those blueberry plants! I bet you’ll have luck with most all of them! Save some rainwater now in any containers you have so you can have the boys water them in the next couple of weeks when we need rain. (I LOVE you guys and I LOVE cats and kittens)! It’s wonderful that Meg’s Grandma is there visiting! Hope you get lots of photos and videos of her and the children, especially baby girl!

You might consider a bee hive to pollinate all your fruit trees. Maybe one of the boys might get interested in it. Pay a visit to a local aviary and see what is involved.

Ben/Meg, you may want to plan the last 13 blueberry plants in full sun somewhere. Blueberries grow best in full sun, and under your canopy, they will get mostly shade - when those trees are grown. So you may want to plan for the future when those trees are super huge and have a blueberry patch in the full sun.

Its takes a bit of time for no till but the benefits are amazing. In a few years you'll be amazed at the difference. I can now use my hands to move soil around to plant.I love to show people who have an interest!! Happy Gardening!

I spent my childhood in Nova Scotia. There were blueberry bushes EVERYWHERE! All along the roadways, all through the woods, backyards. We never paid for blueberries.

Great blessing to get all those blueberries. Can’t wait to see your orchard permaculture forest grow out. We were gifted two blueberry plants early spring and I had one so on my way. Not the space you have but I will have a little permaculture area soon. Already have 2 apricot, a peach I am grafting this Fall, 2 black locust, strawberries and several herbs I am dividing. Progress is good.

I would love a video on what the expenses are for your homestead. For example, what are your utility bills and even your grocery bills with what you are able to grow on your own? Plus, more with Meg! I love it when she cooks and provides for everyone. Awesome purchase, I have 12 plants in my backyard, I wish I had your 5 extra “pickers”. You, and the family, will stay busy next May to July. Don’t spread the blueberries too far apart, you may need bird netting, depends on a few factors.

You may have found your new enterprise...blueberry farmer🌞 I'm. In Oregon and going to the blueberry farms is something I have done my whole life. It's a generational thing lol. My grandparents took me and my siblings...I took my kids... now my girls and I take their kids. We LOVE It. Best of luck to you BEAUTIFUL People 🌞👏

So happy that you're going down the permaculture road. I have been on it since I bought my first house in 1988. I covered my clay soil in cardboard, wet newspapers and straw. I had neighbours complain to the local council about using straw, said it attracted rats! I told the council lady to talk to her gardening department, the local council was using straw mulch everywhere, 😅. I expect Billy was thrilled by your swales, such a huge benefit for your land. My garden soil is what I invest in, good soil makes growing things easier. I used the no dig method too, my husband, who is not a gardener, keeps trying to dig over the garden beds. He's very fond of chopping back my plants just as they are about to flower, poisoning my herbs, 'they look like weeds' and cultivating the weeds. 🙄. If he had his way, we'd have a few trees and lots of grass. His father is a great gardener, as is his brother.

We have a clay sand kinda of muck here. Deep mulch is the only thing that's beginning to combat it. LOVE that you are on fire for your family!
