Pretty sure you could bowl as many bouncers as you wanted much later than that, around the 90's Also the bouncer is a fast bowlers tool not only to intimidate the batsman but to stop his footwork, get him rooted to the crease and often leads to a wicket when the batsman plays a timid shot after being "worked over" with lots of short balls to the head area

The umpires can ask you to wear a helmut, but they can’t order you . Many batsmen refuse to wear a helmut , some refuse to wear batting gloves. Even at club level you can face deliveries over 90 mph ( about 150 klm) and even over 100 mph is possible. You can even front up to a lower grade game on melfoid, synthetic grass or even concret, and face an A grade or Turf 1 bowler coming back from injury. Or face a rep’ fast bowler in an old farts competition.... if the bowler plays test cricket but is 36 yo or older, he can play in the seniors comp and bowl as fast as he likes. No one wore helmets until Tony Grieg chickened out against Lillee and Thompson around 1976 / 77. England had to recall both Edrich and Cowdrey to face Lillee and Thompson because the younger players didn’t have the courage. Colin Cowdrey was brilliant..... didn’t wear a helmut a deliberately took ball after ball on his body rather than get out. Edrich showed the younger players up too. England is not pay much back then.... Cowdrey had to take time off work and lose money to play for his country. At least they paid his air fare to Australia and I assume his lodgings as well. Not sure how he got home to England. lol One bouncer is always legal. A lethal ball that is pitched in the batsman half is not a bouncer, it is a long hop. Long hops are supposed to be smashed to the boundary as easy runs. At 90 mph the batsman has about 3 to 4,tenths of a second to see the ball and play it. Takes over a tenth to actually see the ball.... So he has about 2 tenths left..... 1 tenth to pick up the line and judge the length. Another tenth to decide on what to do, move the feet, adjust the body weight, read any late movement in the air, adjust for sideways movement off the pitch, adjust for unexpected bounce--- and then play the shot or get out of the way.

A new cricket ball is as hard a rock and the seam will cut your skin in some circumstances. You cannot just get out of the way as the ball moves in the air and when it hits the seam on the pitch. At 90mph you have less than a second to react. When teams have bowlers 88mph+ it's not uncommon for batsmen getting hit. As you can see you have about enough time to turn your face away but not to duck. There have been deliveries recorded at 100mph

The way Steve Smith got hit was somewhat similar to the way Phil Hughes was hit when he died. The helmets nowadays can have extra padding added to cover the neck and lower skull, but not all batsmen wear the padding, its not required in the game yet.

So recently a very good cricketer by the name of Phil Hughes died after being hit in the same place as the batsman at 3:40 in the video..The batsman at 3:40 Steve Smith was also present on the day Phil Hughes died. From the time the ball is released to the time it gets to the batsman is around 0.03 seconds...the ball weighs 156grams moving at over 100mph and the ball is rock hard it's made from a ball of cork wrapped in threads of cotton then wrapped in two semi circles of treated leather stitched together...The leather outside is sprayed in lacquer which makes it very hard

You guyz can research about the "Body Line" tactics employed by England in 1932-33 against Australia...that time batsmen had very few protective gear, pitches were uncovered over night & there was no restrictions over the number of bouncers in an over. They bowled as many bouncers as they could & injured many players to the extend of hospitalization. That series changed many rules for the game of cricket.

As an answer to your question, I can say that, a bouncer is a legal delivery, and bowls anticiating the batter to play a particular shot and the fielder will be placed for a catch. Also, speedy bouncer may surprise the batter and chances of edging and catching by the keeper. The bowler will be trying for these. The batter, will be a trained professional and they have to face those. They will play shots like pullshot, hookshot, uppercut etc to produce good scoring againts these balls. Also they have freedom to leave the ball. Still, if the batter was completely out of clue, due to his problem or the exceptional execution by the bowler, instead of playing that ball, they may get hitted. Nothing issues, they can leave the pitch or they can continue.

The ball has a large seam running down the middle, and they work to shine the ball on one side and rough it on the other. That, combined with bowling technique allows fast bowls to 'swing' the ball, which makes it travel horizontally unpredictably in the air during flight. That 'swing' combined with the seam, and the unpredictability of the 'pitch', which depending on the stadium and nation will dry out and crack - or over the course of a test or one dayer, get roughed up by the players both intentionally and unintentionally, creates a bounce that is difficult to predict. Depending on the bowler's strategy, but they might deliver a series of similar balls and then follow it up with a bouncer like you're seeing here. They're typically not this bad, this is a clip video of really effective ones. But you can imagine, one that just changes the flight enough to make someone try and hit it, miss it by just enough to edge the ball and facilitate a catch. Or maybe, intimidate the batsman, causing mistakes.

I've had hit twice in my balls during practice(2006-07), I was wearing guards and pads and helmet but man it still hurts a lot you cant even imagine. I was a fastbowler and a tailender. I was shit as a batsman, both of the time i miscalculated the delivery, was hoping for a offswing, but the ball came at me with inswing, missed the bat and hit my balls.

These injuries are not as frequent as this video might suggest but they do happen. The reason for these helmets being slightly lose is because of visibility and comfort, a batsman might be required to bat out there in hot and humid conditions for hours and having super safe but super constricting helmet makes things very difficult.

It is the bounce off the pitch that makes it hard. It can be a little unpredictable. Also batsman try to show that it did not hurt to not give the bowler encouragement. It is very tough

Back then a bowler could bowl multiple bouncers per an over but then they changed rules so now only one bouncer can be bowled per an over..

A cricket ball is slightly smaller but heavier and harder than a baseball (same basic construction but the leather is lacquered). Plus the raised seam tends to cut or leave a nasty imprint.

Watch 70s, 80s and early 90s test cricket. The west indies had the best bowling attack in the world. Back then it was brutal. There is a documentary about it. I think it is callec fires in babylon.

Injuries are rare. The ball is slightly softer than stone, coming at you at 140kph/90mph. At least one batsman has been killed (Philip Hughes, God rest him). The most injuries are strains. As a spin bowler in school I struggled with shoulder strain quite a bit.

God Sachin Tendulkar got hit by Wasim Akram bowling 95+ mph in a green wicket aged just 16, got broken nose and black eye, got up,scored half century. Only one God of cricket. True legend.

A Cricket ball is heavier than a Base ball by 15-20% but much harder as it has a wooden core with hard lacquer and elevated stitching - a bowl and a pitch in both games are almost same speeds topping 100mph, but the Cricket batsman is about 2m/6ft closer to the bowl/pitch release of the ball - and of course the bounce of the bowl is unpredictable off the hard cricket pitch... and happily legal to aim at any part of the batsman including the head... so getting hit like this videos is just part of the fun (and yes players do die... don't look up those vids please)

It's harder than a baseball. You'll see majority of the Pakistani fastest bowler hitting the bastmen coz Pakistan bowlers usually bowl around 95-100miles/h 150kph plus.

Batters getting hit with a leather ball harder than rock at more than 130 Kmph on their faces is not a joke !!! When that stone hits your helmet or head...a current rushes down to the core of your body... You lose your senses for some seconds .. It's painful as hell But after all of this... they get up and play coz they can't be substituted (like a football game)... IF U'RE HURT, YOU'RE OUT
