@theElemDragon
@theElemDragon Жыл бұрын
I frequent the Microcenter in St. Davids, PA quite often. Like.... more than i should for living an hour drive away from it. I managed to snag a 4090 FE back in November or December i believe. Was the best day EVER! Was in no way planning on getting a GPU while i was there... mostly went to look at 3D printer filament. Had recently upgraded my entire platform to a R9 7950X, and was still using my RTX 2070. Was down there looking at the filament thinking "what are the odds they'd even have a 4090 in stock?" and as i'm looking at the filament, i hear someone else ask, and the employee is like "Yes, we have one left, a PNY 4090". I'm immediately thinking "F*CK!". I walk around the components area a bit, start talking to another employee about 3d printers, and I ask him if there are any 4090's left, and he's like "Sorry, they just sold the last one we had". So i start walking around, looking at more filament, and I just decided I looked around enough and was going to start walking up to the checkout line, when the guy i was talking to basically runs over to me with a big brown non-descript box and says "From what my manager tells me, there's a 4090 Founders in this box. If you want it, it's yours." Of course i said yes. They opened the outer box to double check that it was in fact a 4090 FE, which it was (and i kept that brown box, too.... over-engineered to hell it is).... and I think just because of the sheer shock that they receieved a card pretty much STRICTLY ever sold at Best Buy. Other employees came over like "Is that really a FE? We actually got one?" Another customer said he wanted to buy it and they're like "Nope, it's already claimed". Even now, there are some times I'll be wandering around the store, and one of the employees that was hovering around that day will just come up to me and ask "How's that 4090 treating you?" I know they work on commission, and sometimes they can be a bit hounding because of this.... but they're just the most awesome group of people to just hang out and talk to about the most random tech related stuff. You can tell that the people that work there LOVE tech (you'd kinda have to...), unlike at Best Buy which is just a job to most of them.

I feel like an RX 6800 and a 5800x3d would have been a better route. He could make 200+ bucks back on the 6600 (XT?). That would give him still a great CPU, and also a 16GB card...which is already getting relevant.

Decent upgrade. I’d have been tempted to grab a 5800x3d and a 6800 non xt for right at 800. Keep the current board, sell the 6600 then upgrade ram and psu. But overall should be a decent upgrade especially once the gpu gets swapped later.

I did a similar upgrade to this. I had a ryzen 3600, and a b450 msi tomahawk max mobo and 16gb of ddr4. I was going to get a ryzen 5800X3D and upgrade to 32gb of RAM, but this was almost $400. Instead I just got the 7900X bundle from microcenter which was $550. So I jumped platforms, got way more M.2 slots to put in spare drives, PCIE 5, and a lot more USBs and features, along with 32gb of RAM. Rendering performance tripled, and games no longer have microstutters and overall framerates went up a lot. I then built another spare PC for the living room with my old parts.
