@@thepenguin1321 I think Crisp's run around Aintree in 1973 was the greatest ever considering the weight he was carrying. It was heart-breaking that he didn't win. He'll always be remembered though, and far longer than many horses who did win it.
@MANUTD4LIFE1715 жыл бұрын
Disagree mate, whilst I fully accept Red Run is and always will be one of the greats, Tiger Roll has proved himself worthy of being spoken about in that category. The Grand National may have been a harder course to jump round in Red Rums day, but the lower fences these days make it much more of a stamina test. Back in Red Rums day he had an advantage because he was a better jumper than everything else, so even if he was carrying top weight, he had a big edge on the rest. But the modern day national jumping isn’t as important, the race is more of a gruelling stamina test, so the likes of Tiger Roll who have had huge rises in the weights, are always at a big disadvantage
@MANUTD4LIFE1715 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all jumps horses are geldings, not just because it makes a horse more focused, but more because of the pain brushing your bollocks through fence after fence causes. So no Tiger Roll won’t be producing any offspring.

Rummy's triple victories can never be equalled, even if Tiger Roll triumphs again next year. The conditions in his day were far more challenging and the fences toweringly high and dangerous. That said, the race is still mightily difficult and gruelling for any horse to complete, let alone win. Tiger Roll is an amazingly good horse in the mould of Red Rum in my opinion, small yet strong with a nimble, economical jumping style. Congratulations to Tiger, Davy Russell and all concerned with Tiger's care at home.

Absolutely. Red Rum will always remain number 1 at Aintree regardless of how many more Tiger Roll or others were to win in the future. Becher's totally different (shame), and the distance isn't as long these days. The race is incomparable now. The weight Red Rum carried too was impressive as after his win in '73 he would carry top weight in his 4 remaining Nationals - 12-0, 12-0, 11-10 & 11-8. Of course 11-10 is the limit these days. Still a tremendous achievement from Tiger Roll and it's still a great day on the sporting calendar.

It's a tricky one as different eras. Red Rum and the National go hand in hand, but when you think Tiger Roll has 2 and also a multiple time Cheltenham Festival winner over trips ranging from 2 miles to 4 miles, arguably Tiger is the more classy racehorse overall.

Tiger Roll's second win was on the cards especially after his cross country win at Cheltenham,I will have to say though that he ploughed through the 27th fence (ditch) which he wouldn't of got away with in pasture old. He is heading towards greatness if not already but to compare him with the likes of Red Rum is questionable. No one likes to see any horse die but come on 37 horses going into the second circuit after the fences were at their stiffest tells a big story with me.I would suggest this.As the inner plastic core has been in place for a while now,pack the fences more and bring back the drops,because if this isn't done then this race is heading if not already into a glorified handicap chase. I can now see a reduction with the size of the field being put forward as a solution to what happened at the first fence,this will only make the race more less of a lottery. This was one of my highlights of the year,it's not anymore I sadly have to say!

It's almost sad to see them stream over what once was Becher's Brook as if it was a mere hurdle. Back in the old days the commentators used to get excited as they came to Becher's, Valentines, The Chair............they've stopped because race after race of the fields streaming over these fences as if they were nothing special ( and they are no longer anything special ) has made it seem a bit silly. Fair play to Tiger roll and it is still a fine race but it is not the Grand National and these are not grand national fences.
@TCDL115 жыл бұрын
There isn't much of a drop at Becher's Brook these days. Jockeys would talk about leaping off the edge of the earth once their horses jumped Becher's back in the day. Now that fence along with the Canal Turn, Valentine's, the Chair, etc are less fearsome and cut to a medium height due to the modifications a few years ago. And this year 19 runners completed the course. 14 were pulled up and there were only 7 horses who fell/ brought down/unseated rider which has gotta be a record for the Grand National. Spare a thought though for Up For Review who tragically lost his life at the 1st fence. RIP 😔
@tigerarmyrule5 жыл бұрын
@@TCDL11 Good points David. I think the drop at Becher's is now 10 inches. The fallers tend to be due to the overcrowding at the first or else getting tied up in the loose spruce. Faster going,which happens on drier ground,tends to raise the risk of injurious accidents because of more of a dash for speed in my experience of watching and betting on the race. 1990,which had an exceptionally warm,dry spring,was a prime example. The exception to that was 1998,when pile-ups and sadly fatalities occured in soggy conditions.

Absolutely, I had money on Tiger Roll but found no joy on winning after what happened at the first fence. Tbh, I found all the euphoria afterwards a bit sickening.
@rjjcms15 жыл бұрын
@@vordman I don't have a problem with the euphoria surrounding Tiger Roll's historic achievement,but it is terribly sad that Up For Review was lost. I said oh no or something along those lines because as the field advanced towards the camera I could see in the background that the horse was hurt,kicking its legs unable to get up,and I hoped and prayed that he would be alright. When they had to bypass the fence second time round I feared the worst,which was confirmed soon afterwards. Details of what actually happened are scant as yet because they are likely to upset people,but as he was brought down rather than falling it appears it could have been a tragic accident rather than an issue about the course itself,which has undergone many changes to make it safer compared to what it was like even just several decades ago. The 1st fence has a track record of catching out one or two unwary,unitiated or just plain unfortunate competitors but - unlike the once extremely hazardous Becher's Brook - has not been the source of any fatalities that I can remember and I've watched and bet on the race since the 70s and can remember being dismayed as a kid by news of two horses being lost in one of those 70s races (I still remember the two horses's names,Winter Rain and Zeta's Son,because of that). The previous fatalities in 2012 that resulted in the last major safety changes came about as a result of fatalities at the 4th and 5th fences (20th and 21st on the second circuit) when those particular fences hadn't been the source of any such catastrophes in the previous years,decades even,running up to that.
@Leediverify5 жыл бұрын
@@rjjcms1I believe the horse that fell and died at the first in 2012 was called Sychronised, ridden by AP McCoy.
@rjjcms15 жыл бұрын
@@Leediverify Thanks for that info. Just had a look over the stats,and they threw up a few things. They say that Synchronised fell at Becher's the first time round,continued riderless and crashed again at the 11th,and in the 2012 race another horse,AccodingToPete,died at Becher's the second time round,and a jockey broke his leg at the 5th which (as the 21st) had to be bypassed on the second circuit. That followed changes made following fatalities at the 4th and 6th (Becher's Brook) in 2011,after which in order to improve safety the landing side on the 1st was levelled out,the 4th rediced slightly in height and the huge drop on the landing side of Becher's reduced sgnificantly. Following the 2012 race the core of the fences was made softer and the starting run shortened to bring it much closer to the first fence than it used to be. Historically,Becher's has caused by far the greatest number of fatalities,just as I expected,but I was surprised to see that the far less infamous 4th (and 20th) has taken the next highest number,one ahead of the Canal Turn. Then,also unexpectedly to me,comes the 1st (and 17th) fence,which though usually claiming one or two as the 1st has caused the fourth highest number. It transpires that very nearly all the fatalities in the last two or three decades have occurred at those four fences,with the open ditch 3rd (or 19th) and Valentines the next most dangerous. Surprisingly,the feared hulk that is the Chair,where the only death of a jockey happened,hasn't caused an equine fatality for 40 years.
@helenemillar76265 жыл бұрын
If you bet on Tiger Roll then you invested in the race knowing that very unfortunately accidents and sometimes sadly fatalities do occur. Yes, of course any death causes a shadow to be cast over an otherwise joyous occasion, and I felt the same, having bet on Tiger Roll myself. However, Tiger Roll's amazing double-backed second victory has catapulted him into the history books and should quite rightly be celebrated and marvelled at as a wonderful event.

I realise horse racing will never be banned, there is too much MONEY involved for this to be a credible likelihood. What I don't understand is why the 'powers that be' enjoy making these beautiful animals jump at speed over fences/obstacles. If they insist on racing, then they should make it easier for the animals to just 'race' on the flat, obvious that such a powerful creature that has fragile lower legs will be susceptible to injuries when asked to jump unnecessary hurdles. I agree with other comments that these animals are very well looked after but it’s for the sole reason of racing them to win money, it's a business at the end of the day. It was so very upsetting to see 'Up for Review' thrashing about in such distress after falling at the first fence in the Grand National, he must have been in dreadful pain. It's said that the horses love racing but really, would they, if they knew they would die before the end of the race? It's humans that enter the horses into a race, not the horse itself, they don’t have a choice.
@jabhookjabcross42315 жыл бұрын
Kate your totally right. The horses do what humans tell them to do. They don't do it of their own volition. They are prey animals and their ability to run is built into their DNA to protect them from predators. Horses don't have the same view of racing as humans as they don't bet, they don't win money and they don't want to beat others, their instinct to run is to avoid predators. They are fantastic athletes and humans exploit their abilities for their own personal gain and in most cases without enough regard for the horse. Horses being injured and or euthanased in races should not be tolerated but it is an almost everyday occurrence. If racing is to continue extreme efforts need to be made by racing authorities to make it safe enough to protect the welfare of horses. If this can't be achieved then questions must be asked about whether or not racing should be allowed to continue. At present, to many ppl in racing see horse deaths as nothing more than a necessary evil and a price worth paying. Everybody in racing should see what happened on Saturday as something that has to stop and must be avoided at all costs. Then we can start to see the improvements we need to see if horse racing can be made safe enough to ensure horses don't face an agonizing death on the course being shot behind a few screens. I've followed horse racing since I was a child and I genuinely love horses. They are the most noble athletes I've ever seen and I'm dismayed at what happens to them all too often and how they are treated once they are unable to race with many being sent to slaughterhouses, which is also just plain wrong. Change is needed urgently.

As a very casual watcher of horse racing why is this the case?
@MANUTD4LIFE1715 жыл бұрын
Well most they can carry is 11’10 these days, but it’s what all his opposition will be carrying that will hinder him. He won off 159 today, so if he goes up to 167-169 for next year as I’d expect, the likes of Annibale Fly who was off 164 today and top weight will be getting weight off Tiger Roll rather than conceding it 5 pounds like he did today. Conceding weight to horses good enough to finish 2nd in Gold Cups is a mighty task, but if any horse can give it a go then Tiger Roll can, but it’s a massive ask, no doubt about that
@MANUTD4LIFE1715 жыл бұрын
The Grand National is a handicap race. All horses are given a rating based on their ability, Tiger Roll today won today off 159, let’s say for example he is racing against a horse who is rated 155, that means that horse carry’s 4 pounds less than he does. If he races against a horse off 164, like Annibale Fly the top weight, it means Annibale Fly carried 5 pound more than him today. Last year Tiger Roll won off 151, this year it was 159, as handicapper put him up in the weights for winning last year, so next year he will likely be off 167-169, so he will have a mighty task of winning again. This is why the Grand National is so difficult to win multiple times, as previous winners, and horses with a lot of ability have to carry more weight than the rest, so Tiger Rolls achievements to win twice are remarkable. The reason they have handicaps, is to make the racing more competitive, and to try to give all 40 horses a chance to win.

BUT The fences trouble me, they are too tall and in width wise they are too large. I also believe, the number of horse's is too much. Up the view died as a result of a horse falling over the fence, taking down Up for view. Then the other horses had no other space to go so they had to trample on Up for View. Cause serious neck injury and then result in death.

Statistically the race track is one of the safest places for a horse to be you whopper. Most accidental deaths happen in the paddock, often with no supervision so they hang around in agony for hours before they get attended to by a vet.
