The critique was that in Gambino's video, violence is in the background, expressed as something that happens while people are distracted by the media. In Residente's video is in the forefront, right in your face because it is something that is not masked, it is an everyday reality.

Yes, a couple of examples. If you stand at the grocery checkout and look at the magazines here, you have The Enquirer, Reader's Digest, cooking recipes, etc. Elsewhere, they show the crimes that happened overnight on the front cover of the magazines, blood & face, sort of morbid. Elsewhere, growing up with real combat sports, street fights, etc. I remember the fake wrestling here. That's why the big push with the UFC. Brainwashing people into thinking people are tough here, in the States!!!

i tried not to cry but seeing that scene of Victor Jara broke me. my dad was an active part in uprisings in the 70s and he fought in the underground against the dictator banzer (also supported by CONDOR) and he knew other socialist fighters from chile etc. so when i see the lyrics they transport me to the stories i heard from my dad while growing up. i am so happy that knox can identify everything and understand the long history of resistance and sorrow that interlace in our culture. loved this reaction✨💯

My grandparents were also part of the uprisings in the 70s, but in Uruguay. I hear their stories and it's terrifying how incredibly close they came to getting caught by Condor. My 4 grandparents were about 15-19 years old at that time and 2 of them exiled to Sweden. The other 2 stayed in Uruguay but they lost so many friends and family. My abuela passed away last year and she fought for answers until her last breath. Ni olvido ni perdón! Hasta que todos los desaparecidos digan presente

He later became a mythical figure in the Peruvian struggle for independence and indigenous rights movement, as well as an inspiration to myriad causes in Spanish America and beyond. :)) Awesome video! The first image represents Lolita Lebron, a Puerto Rican activist who in 1954 went to the United States Capitol and demonstrated for the liberation and independence of Puerto Rico. He mentions 5 presidents in 11 days, he passed in Argentina in 2001. He talks about the dead and disappeared due to the Condor operation and the violence that occurred in Colombia and Venezuela during the protests, the uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation in Mexico by women indigenous people with balaclavas. The execution of Víctor Jara, Chilean singer-songwriter who was detained and tortured in the National Stadium of Santiago, they stepped on him and broke his fingers forcing him to sing and play until he was shot in 1973 during the Pinochet dictatorship, also as Bolsonaro from Brazil mockery of his people and has completely forgotten the Amazon, the inequalities of our society, from the conquest, evangelization to the present day and how it has permeated, how the Spanish Crown tortured the caudillo Tupac Amaru II of Peru, a precursor of independence from that country, that by not being able to get information or dismember him by ripping limbs off with horses, they decapitated and mutilated him, many references, it is very crude but that is how our history is, we share pain and our societies have suffered similar penalties...

So at my roots are all my Mexican heritage, but was raised here in the US… I feel I lost a lot of my culture when I was brought here for a better future my parents did what they felt they needed to survive and I thank them for that. But in exchange for a better financial state we gave up family community n culture. The image of the Afro woman breastfeeding her child thru a wire fence speaks so deeply on this issue I feel… families are forced to split up just to feed their young. Ppl just like animals need to migrate just to eat sometimes… why are we penalized to migrate to another territory of our land ? Residente again killing it!!! Knox killing it! 🔥🔥🔥

You're the best music reactor by far Knox. I don't think even spanish speakers found as many references as you did in this. This is the best reaction I have seen so far. Amazing how much you know about Latinamerican history! That is rare to see by someone who isn't Latinamerican himself, even most Latinamericans don't know. I think the image of the player holding up the cup in one hand and the weapon in the other represents what happened in Brazil during 2014. A lot of children living in the streets were killed to "clean" up the streets for the World cup.

Amazing reaction. I’m so glad you actually understand what the song is about and break it down so well for people who mostly probably have very little knowledge on the topic. Thanks for this amazing analysis, I am grateful it comes from a non-Spanish speaker and especially from (what seems to me) to be an American. I lived in the USA for a bit and I always found it incredibly weird when people would call it “America” to the point where I honestly at first thought it was “intentional”, but realistically it’s just literally Newspeak. And IMO, there’s actually quite a few videos proving this as most people who aren’t from Latin America are always very shocked by the first “this is not America” graphic element of the video; that’s literally it. Once again, thanks for your wonderful breakdown I’m sure it’ll be of much value to many people 🙏🏼.

Thank you Knox. You give me hope. All other US Americans reactions I have seen are are quite embarrasing. They can't even get past the title, the point that America is not just US. They also get stuck on that one can speak broadly about many issues of the world and not just own experience. Residente is boricua but loves and is loved by all pueblos and peoples of the Americas. World event knowledge and empathy is lacking big time. Things happening in neighboring countries should not be so foreign. We share the same continent.

Some references: The song is in response to Childish Gambino for his song "This is America". America is a whole continent and not just the USA. The image at the beginning makes an apology for an artistic work by Chilean Alfredo Jaar exhibited on 5th Avenue in New York (This is not America). The woman who shoots is Lolita Lebron, (Puerto Rican activist who went to Congress in 1954 and demonstrated for the liberation of Puerto Rico, was imprisoned for 24 years). The essence of the video is to say that before the gringos ancestors came to invade, there were already cultures here, developed civilizations and they were exterminated, but even so, here we are, we did not leave, we do not leave. Now, the machete is a work tool that is linked to slavery but is also used as a symbol of uprising, of struggle and rebellion against the abuse of the boss, in this case of the governments of each Latin country. The woman who breastfeeds through the fence alludes to the families separated on the northern border of Mexico. The Peruvian revolutionary Túpac Amaru, an indigenous leader who rose up in times of Spanish colonization and was dismembered using horses, the missing students happened in Mexico 43 male students was taken by cops and were all murdered, also talks about the dead and disappeared during OPERATION CONDOR (state political and anti-communist repression campaign created by the United States that included intelligence operations and assassinations of opponents in almost all of America). The execution of Víctor Jara, a Chilean singer-songwriter who fought for the people and was tortured and murdered in 1973 by the Pinochet dictatorship. The women with balaclavas are from the Zapatista indigenous women's movement in the State of Chiapa (Mexico), The shirtless tattooed men are Central American gangs like "La Marasalvatrucha" emerged from the lack of opportunities in Central American countries. The one who wipes his mouth with the flag is the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro (for the burning of the Amazon rainforest to turn it into pasture for cattle and crops). It mentions 5 presidents in 11 days, it happened in Argentina in 2001 (the banks kept the people's savings and there was a revolt that expelled the president), it also shows the protests in Venezuela against the dictatorial regime of Nicolas Maduro, including the protestant that they burned in the middle of the march, in the same way the mobilizations in Colombia in 2021 against the government of Iván Duque where the Police cruelly murdered young people, left others blind and raped protestant women. The black woman dressed in colors is a palenquera, a representative fruit seller of Cartagena Colombia. Throughout the video you see the presence of transnational brands that sell garbage to Latinos. Finally, the statue of liberty replaced by the figure of a native aboriginal chief and the Aztec temple in the middle of the city accentuate the idea of the video, we were here first.

I found you through your Hamilton reactions a couple weeks ago and I was already amazed by your knowledge of history then, it's so nice to see you also know a lot about the rest of the continent! Also the fact that you know Spanish and can properly understand the lyrics is wonderful. I got a little emotional when you caught the 5 presidents in 11 days thing and Victor Jara's execution. Residente is truly a mastermind, I enjoy his music so much, and this particular song is harsh but so real and its message is so important. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Maybe you could react/analyse some more of Residente/Calle 13's songs? I would like to hear your thoughts on Latinoamerica, Guerra or El aguante.

i’m genuinely so grateful towards all the knowledge you just presented to everyone in this video, as a latina i’m extremely grateful for you knowing about our culture and acknowledging it, se que entendes español pero aún así siento que dar el mensaje que diste a través del video en inglés podría tener un gran impacto on english speaking folks, so thank you thank you thank you!!! you were respectful the whole time and really educated since there were many mentions of historical moments in residente’s song, would really love to see more reactions to songs like this one!!!

I watched about 4 reactions of Latin content creators before watching this one and none of them did an analysis as meticulous as you did highlighting all those historical references. You did such a great job.
