This, in my opinion, the best movie Tom Cruise ever made. The Last Samurai is probably one of the most under appreciated movies ever.

You can't go wrong by mixing "Dances With Wolves" with "Glory". Especially not when you have Billy Connolly aboard to even out the drama. Not to mention the actor who portrayed the linguist and historian (who was also in HP).

Hands down one of my all time favourite movies. I have watched this movie, in full, several times. From the amazing imagery, script, dialogue all the way to the BEAUTIFUL soundtrack that only serves to compliment an already amazing movie! Great recap and summary. Like you said, "Watch the full movie" for the summary is just a sneak peak.

This was filmed in Taranaki New Zealand, the army training is at Pukekura park New Plymouth.. gosh did the rents go up because of all the extras in town.. everything was busy. Billy Connolly roamed freely. Tom flew around in a chopper with a local.. the actors were friendly and social..it was a wonderful time before the internet took over and COVID. Come visit you will be welcome wherever you come from.

Personally, as a martial artist I am most amazed at the level of control the Samauri has with his Katana. Anyone can slash away with a blade. Only an extremely well-trained warrior can wield it like a surgeon. I don’t say “master” because there is no such thing. No one “masters” anything in martial arts. There is always improvement to be made and more to learn about everything.

Tom Cruise has made so many blockbuster movies that made remarkable amounts of money for Hollywood, but most of them lack any real substance. In the final analysis, most of them are stereotypical Hollywood "action" movies, filled with explosions, car chases, and gun play. In contrast, "The Last Samurai" actually introduced mid19th Century Japanese culture to an English-speaking audience and did so in a very sympathetic manner -- even if it mangled a lot of Japan's actual early modern history. It is a fair representation of what was good and honorable about samurai culture in a Japan on the cusp of embracing Western modernity.
@craigbosko2229Ай бұрын
The movie did not take place in mid 19th century, it took place in 18th century.
@egosumhomovespertilionemАй бұрын
@@craigbosko2229 The American Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865, in which Tom Cruise's character was a junior officer in the Union Army before arriving in Japan sometime afterwards, still wearing his Union Army uniform. The 19th Century included the years 1801 to 1900; the 20th Century ran from 1901 to 2000; and the 21st Century began on January 1, 2001. That's the way centuries are numbered -- going back to the First Century A.D., which began on January 1 of the Year 1 A.D. I hope this helps.

Tom gifted Ken Watanabe his horse. My buddy is friends with Ken. His horse lived out a good life in the plains Of Gunma Prefecture. Tom was so deeply impacted by filming The Last Samurai he kinda went off the rails after it.

Watanabe's performance truly set the most incredible tone for Cruise's response as the American soldier stuck behind enemy lines. Beyond that... just notice: this is "Dances With Wolves" combined with "Glory". No wonder it was magnificent. #EdZwick

This was a really great story and the movie was made well, the only issue is the casting. Cruise tends to rub a lot of folks the wrong way myself included. For modern action roles he's royalty but for serious dramatic roles he looks like a clown trying to perform Shakespeare.

I think he did quite well in this film portraying a man broken by his past... I think you're just letting his craziness affect your ability to see the film without bias...

To me this movie is right up there with Dances with Wolves. It gradually becomes more about Katsumoto than the soldiers point of view. And the viewer sympathizes with the Samurai culture that is waning and hates the imperialist bad guys from both governments. The woke may call it a white savior movie, but it hearkens back to an earlier time when many of the best great movie stories were made. Todays superhero and female hero movies are so lame in comparison.

He has ptsd and it was a time of brutal warfare and cruel actions from all sides. Tgere are stories of many men during that time, women as well, who welcomed death, especially a quick death when captured. It was the worst fear of any solider to get captured, it's 100 percent believe able, especially with ptsd and survivors guilt, as well as being an alcoholic who wasn't completely in reality.
